Israel’s foreign ministry has accused the New York mayor, Zohran Mamdani, of pouring “antisemitic gasoline on an open fire” after he reversed a recent order by the outgoing mayor, Eric Adams.

“On his very first day as @NYCMayor, Mamdani shows his true face: he scraps the IHRA definition of antisemitism and lifts restrictions on boycotting Israel. This isn’t leadership. It’s antisemitic gasoline on an open fire,” the foreign ministry said in a post on X.

Mamdani revoked an Adams-era order that adopted the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of antisemitism, which the previous administration said included “demonizing Israel and holding it to double standards as forms of contemporary antisemitism”.

Israel’s response came hours after Mamdani issued an order to rescind all executive orders that Adams issued after he was indicted on federal corruption charges in 2024 – charges that were later, controversially, dropped.

Being anti Israel is not the same as being antisemitic, it's being anti-zionist.

[–] imsufferableninja@sh.itjust.works 118 points 5 days ago (3 children)

You'll never convince zionists of that though

[–] whyNotSquirrel@sh.itjust.works 101 points 5 days ago

they know it, they are just using antisemitism as a free pass

In fact, being pro Israel is antisemitic

Jewish people are in more danger thanks to Israel. So yeah.

"Only two groups benefit from the conflation of zionism and Judaism: zionists, to legitimize zionism; and anti-semites, to vilify Judaism."

Pardon my French but WHAT THE FUCK does Israel’s opinion on the mayor from a city half way around the globe have to do with anythingv

[–] kinsnik@lemmy.world 82 points 5 days ago (2 children)

NYC has the largest jewish commiunity outside israel, many of which anti-zionists, and it shows how people of different faiths can co-live peacefully, so you can see why isreal wants to influence our politics

[–] RagingRobot@lemmy.world 29 points 5 days ago (9 children)

It's clear why they want to but why are our news outlets amplifying their messages. They shouldn't be

[–] lka1988@sh.itjust.works 27 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

but why are our news outlets amplifying their messages. They shouldn’t be

Because "our" "news" outlets are owned by the same people who funded the opposition to Mamdani in the first place.

breaking my hiatus to say this:

New York is the present day Lviv in what it meant to Jewish identity before the rise of zionism following the Odessa Pogroms. israel knows this. they want to re-evoke the origins of their movement. they want to control what it means to be Jewish.

but Jewishness is defined for a lot of Jews not by our connection to Levantine soil, but instead our opposition to oppression. fuck zionism forever. and fuck its need to reignite hate against semitic people to create a self fulfilling prophecy that we cannot be safe in our own communities.

israel is pharaoh.

[–] Grandwolf319@sh.itjust.works 38 points 5 days ago (1 children)

New York is just outside of greater Israel.

New York City has 8.4m people in it; 15% (1.3m) of them are Jewish, making them a key cultural and political group. New York City also has an outsized (if dropping) cultural and political influence on the US.

There are 7.3m Jewish people in Israel, and NYC is the largest population of Jewish people outside Israel, meaning that NYC actions and opinions may have more of an influence within Israel than opinions from elsewhere.

NYC is also seen as a huge, vibrant, peaceful, multicultural city; the longtime headquartering of the United Nations there, the largest financial capital in the world, etc - all give it an emotional and cultural impact.

Here's the thing: when Americans look at Mamdani's election, we see a rejection of the current US political parties, a pushback against the oligarchs, late-stage capitalism, and the corruption and fascism of the right. For most of the people (at least on the US center and left) Mamdani's religion doesn't factor into much (if anything).

For a certain segment of Jewish Israelis who heavily lean into that identity, the election of a Muslim mayor is a threat, especially one as driven and charismatic as Mamdani. And there's a political class in Israel who is willing to promote and exploit that fear, in order to gain their own goals, whether that's increased political power, more money, or simply avoiding going to prison.

Who gives a fuck what Israel thinks?

[–] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 17 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Criticizing Israel is not Antisemitism.

It will never be Antisemitism.

It is an assault on non-israeli jews world wide to try to claim valid critisim of Israel is antisemitism. It is an intentional and malicious undermining of what Antisemitism is, to try and claim it has anything, whatsoever, to do with valid criticism of the racist, genocidal state of Israel.

[–] Xittstorm@aussie.zone 70 points 5 days ago (3 children)

Repeat after me: being anti-Israel (government) is not being anti-Semitic. Being anti-Hamas is not being Islamophobic. When you are against assholes and warcrimes you are anti-asshole and anti-warcriminal.

Israel accuses X of antisemitism

I wonder how many people, like me, have just completely stopped paying this headline any attention. Oh, there they go again, calling someone anti-semitic. Was that like the person I heard who said something totally legit that was supposedly anti-semitic, or was that like the Jewish group that was supposedly anti-semitic?

Boy, stop crying wolf.

[–] buddascrayon@lemmy.world 42 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (13 children)

The thing about this that is really fucked up is that this watering down of the term is giving cover to actual anti-semites who really do hate jewish people no matter who and where they are.

Fellas, is it antisemetic to perform your mayoral duties to New York City instead of Tel Aviv?

Mandami lifted a rule stating you cannot stop doing buainess with isreal.

He gave people the FREEDOM to choose to stop dealing witb isreal. And of course, let the crybabies come out of the woodwork.

[–] melfie@lemy.lol 23 points 4 days ago (4 children)

I don’t really follow the “anti-semitism” argument. AFAIK, Ashkenazi Jews like Netanyahu are basically European (a.k.a., white folks) with a little Semitic ancestry mixed in, whereas Palestinians are more or less pure Semites. Maybe the “anti-semitism” spiel holds up when comparing themselves to other Europeans, but how is this anything more than the usual white imperialists fabricating a philosophy to justify killing brown people and taking their land?

"Antisemetic" now means "disagrees with the agenda of the Israeli government and military," which currently involves the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians, the disruption of the economy, government, and society of all NATO nations and allies, and normalizing human rights abuses around the world.

We need more of these so-called "antisemites" in the US and other governments.

The fact the political establishment is this afraid of one mayor in one city with these ideas is all the indication you need to know these ideas are in our (the working people's) best interests.

Ironic that one would post complaints about antisemitism on shitter, the platform whose very owner did a full on Hitler salute on live television in front of thousands of a local audience as well. twice!

[–] stoly@lemmy.world 66 points 5 days ago (1 children)

This is how you know that Mamdani made a good choice. When the bullies cry crocodile tears, you can ignore them.

[–] Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 18 points 4 days ago

Peak Irony: The nation that has very purposefully done the most to spread the impression that Genocide and Mass Murdering of Children is a Jewish trait and thus has endangered countless innocent Jews all over the World, claims that somebody who is against the kind of action that nation commits is against the Jewish People.

[–] SocialMediaRefugee@lemmy.world 47 points 5 days ago

Sorry Israel but you don't represent Jews

[–] BetaBlake@lemmy.world 47 points 5 days ago (3 children)

The word antisemitism used to carry weight, now thanks to Israel it doesn't really anymore

[–] lka1988@sh.itjust.works 35 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

That's what fascists do. Take terms that are commonly understood to mean something serious and use it against every person/group they don't like until it loses all meaning. Then when the fascists are inevitably found to be acting exactly like that term originally described, they can discredit whoever is accusing them because "everyone uses that word for everything, you just don't like us" despite being the cause of that problem in the first place.

Mamdani immediately rescinded all of Adams' executive orders made after Adams' indictment. I wish this article clarified if this EO was part of that batch.

Edit: It was: https://bsky.app/profile/hunterw.bsky.social/post/3mbhyhk2egc2e

From the IHRA working definition, "[C]iticism of Israel similar to that leveled against any other country cannot be regarded as antisemitic."

[–] IchNichtenLichten@lemmy.wtf 32 points 5 days ago

There was a time when a foreign country impugning a mayor would’ve been big news. Now “Israel accuses person of antisemitism” is just something that happens every few days.

[–] madjo@feddit.nl 21 points 4 days ago

Yawn. Israel needs to shut the fuck up

at this point that's a compliment

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 34 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Just like with the US government, if Israel's government is criticizing you you're on the right side.

[–] MiddleAgesModem@lemmy.world 27 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Israel proves it has a government based on bigotry.

Surely nobody cares what Israel has to say at this point.

[–] Don_alForno@feddit.org 9 points 4 days ago

he scraps the IHRA definition of antisemitism and lifts restrictions on boycotting Israel.

Which the IHRA itself adopted as a non-legally binding working definition. It is explicitly not meant to be used in a legal context.

[–] supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz 28 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Right... which is why Mamdani in his first speech as mayor spoke of how much he cherished the multicultural upbringing he had in NYC and used the example of being able to as a Muslim get tasty bagels and lox all the time as a kid.

I particularly bristle at Mamdani being called anti-semitic because Mamdani is a once in a generation political orator who is SPECIFICALLY talented at speaking to the shared interests we all have that transcend meaningless superficial divisions between us. I have no doubt Mamdani will do everything in his power to protect Jewish people along with everyone else and given NYC has the most amount of Jews outside of Israel I would hazard a guess to say most Jews feel similarly who know about Mamdani and aren't caught up in the fear mongering.

[–] De_Narm@lemmy.world 30 points 5 days ago

At this point getting slandered by Israel seems more like a badge of honor. I don't even want a nation committing an ongoing genocide to like me.
