Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

[–] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 31 points 3 days ago (3 children)

I shit you not but I got the question in one of our trainings that you get an email with a racist joke, what do you do?

Of course you should:

1: Call gestapo (for you out there who have never worked in big greed corp, this is always the correct answer), but otherwise you could fail with these:

2: Do nothing

3: Forward to friends

4: Forward to friends, but only if it was really funny ...

"Accidentally"delete it and claim I dont remember ever recieving it if asked. Because even if it is REALLY funny I have bills but I'm also no snitch.

Might not have been if their mother had died in childbirth

[–] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 23 points 3 days ago

I'm ignoring you, trying to steal my chuckle!

See, that just means he let someone else work themselves to death while avoiding labor!

Well a whole generation grew up watching The Office where a guy constantly bullies his autistic coworker and the bully is portrayed as the cool guy and the victim as the meanie. And they all thought it was funny. People don’t recognize bullying when they think it’s funny.

I m autistic and the office is my confort show , its incredibly funny

[–] Grail@multiverse.soulism.net 3 points 2 days ago

Dwight isn't just an autistic coworker. He's an autistic fascist coworker. Most of Jim's pranks exploit Dwight's fascism. Like the time he recruited Dwight to be a secret FBI agent. If Dwight weren't such an authority loving bootlicker, he wouldn't have wanted to be a secret agent for the FBI.

Like, don't go snitching to HR.

But also: what's wrong with you for nagging your coworker if they don't want to exhaust themselves?

[–] PunnyName@lemmy.world 39 points 3 days ago

Toxic workplaces love to hire people who are "hungry", i.e. easily exploited wage slaves.

This is brilliant but i also can’t help but sense a missed c-suite element of the joke

Remind management of this famous quote:

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 4 points 2 days ago

I'm keeping this one in my back pocket.

[–] SpicyLizards@reddthat.com 6 points 3 days ago

Sounds like he will go from section to suite with that go getter attitude!

[–] Simulation6@sopuli.xyz 6 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Off topic, a doctor friend once told me you can frequently tell a person who was a c-section baby by the shape of their heads.

[–] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago

My mom said my head was too big... so they had to c section

But she also said "maybe you were too lazy to crawl out of there"

lmao

maybe I saw the future and was like "ah hell naw" and wanted to nope out of this incarnation

[–] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Yeah, my doctors know me and twin were c-section babies based on that. It always weirds me out though lol.
