A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

All posts must be showerthoughts
The entire showerthought must be in the title
No politics
- If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
- A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
Posts must be original/unique
Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

They’re disempowering themselves. Describe themselves as a victim of circumstance, powerless and without responsibility. It’s a disempowering narrative. You’re shooting yourself in the foot. In this story that we live, you are casting yourself as an npc.

On the flip side, saying “I can’t” adds authority to your argument. You’re citing an unstoppable force as the root cause of your actions. So it’s a tradeoff that way.

I can’t design a rocket ship implies I don’t know how. I won’t design a rocket ship implies I do know how but won’t because I’m too busy or am against the person likely morally. There’s a reason there are multiple words.

I do agree though if you say like ‘I can’t eat this sandwich’ if you’re like full or vegan those are 2 different things

Not sure what you mean. I’m just saying that everyone contributes to social situations (in varying degrees, of course). That is, to the group they’re part of. When you look at the language people use to describe the current political environment, for example, you notice that many feel that they live in a movie (“I hate this timeline”, “can we skip to the part where..”). That’s a pretty significant part of the cause, but it’s usually overlooked, because the responsibility is put only on the active participants.

Yes I know the social equallibriam of it all, but only the people can change it too. Never thought I'd see the US fall so quickly in my lifetime and hopefully people will realize that.

I'm also Canadian so can't do much else but post about it.
