Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

MODERATORS

They’re disempowering themselves. Describe themselves as a victim of circumstance, powerless and without responsibility. It’s a disempowering narrative. You’re shooting yourself in the foot. In this story that we live, you are casting yourself as an npc.

On the flip side, saying “I can’t” adds authority to your argument. You’re citing an unstoppable force as the root cause of your actions. So it’s a tradeoff that way.

We wake up in our cells and dress in limitation

To deprive ourselves of action and causation

Can't or won't we see that we rob ourselves of agency?

Why waste our will with can't where we could won't?

So don't say that you can't.

And do say that you won't

And I will know that you will will

For where there's a will, there's a way

And who knows where you may stray

I can’t stand Taylor Swift.

I don’t like her music and it always annoys me.

I won’t stand Taylor swift.

I am now on several watch lists and my online orders are being heavily scrutinized.

Don't get it, why watchlist?

[–] MaggiWuerze@feddit.org 2 points 4 hours ago

Because "I won’t stand Taylor swift." means that you're going to do something about it

[–] PeriodicallyPedantic@lemmy.ca 10 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

I won't understand what you mean 😌

I can’t design a rocket ship implies I don’t know how. I won’t design a rocket ship implies I do know how but won’t because I’m too busy or am against the person likely morally. There’s a reason there are multiple words.

I do agree though if you say like ‘I can’t eat this sandwich’ if you’re like full or vegan those are 2 different things

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 4 points 8 hours ago

I can't eat this sandwich... They left the crust on and I hate the crust! 😩

Yes, there's a difference. Is this not an obvious concept?

[–] uniquethrowagay@feddit.org 2 points 2 hours ago

Yet it is an obvious concept. That's why people here are confused by the post

I appreciate the optimism, but if "Anything is possible" I doubt a majority of people chose to be poor.
