The United States army announced last month that it would raise the maximum age at which Americans can enlist from 35 to 42 years to expand its pool of eligible candidates amid recruiting challenges in recent years.

An updated version of US Army Regulation 601–210, dated March 20, outlined the changes, including the elimination of rules requiring anyone with a single conviction for marijuana possession or drug paraphernalia to obtain a waiver to enlist.

The new age limit was announced during the US-Israel war on Iran, towards which young people have expressed widespread opposition.

The updated version of Army Regulation 601–210 officially takes effect on Monday, April 20.

They are going to need bodies for the Iran ground invasion and they need to expand the pool of possible recruits/draftees.

[–] hanrahan@slrpnk.net 18 points 2 days ago

here I am at 61, as fit as any 59 year old !

[–] kreskin@lemmy.world 33 points 2 days ago (5 children)

Just use the ICE agents for this. They already have all the gear.

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

ICE is reserved for domestic terrorism. You need professionals over there.

[–] FosterMolasses@leminal.space 3 points 2 days ago

They'll have to crunch the numbers and see which is more profitable

Wouldn't be surprised if they resort to eventually "redirecting their resources"

[–] megopie@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 2 days ago

Problem is that most of them would fail qualifications.

This way we get two birds stoned at once!

I'm betting this will also increase the age limit for conscription. It's also the upper end of the Millennials' age bracket. Millennials and younger are overwhelmingly anti-Republican.

If I were a Republican president, Republicans were historically unpopular with Millennials and younger, I implimented a new war, had a new group that attaches voter registration and social media commentary to individual identity, and I was fearing an upcoming Republican wipe out, I'd probably draft a bunch of millenials and younger who I knew were against me into the war I just started so as to have the enemy's machine-gun fire kill off my opposition.

[–] BussyGyatt@feddit.org 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

bro thats fucking psychotic why would you do that. couldnt you just like, do your job instead

[–] Sunflier@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

bro thats fucking psychotic why would you do that

As if it wouldn't be surprising from the Republicans? They HATE us.

[–] BussyGyatt@feddit.org 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

look, alls im sayin is, please dont become a republican president.

[–] Sunflier@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Ha! As if any of us would be welcomed anywhere near the presidency, especially after NSPM-7.

Well, theres one group of very fine people he'd welcome:

[–] BussyGyatt@feddit.org 2 points 1 day ago

dont be so sure, they let a child molesting traitor in last time.

[–] FosterMolasses@leminal.space 7 points 2 days ago

Good luck to all my fellow tricenarians! At least there's no draft (yet)

[–] apfelwoiSchoppen@lemmy.world 82 points 3 days ago (2 children)

They can change enlistment age ranges that require little to no ID requirement but they demand very strict ID requirements for voting. They are telling us how they think of us as meat crayons.

[–] chaosCruiser@futurology.today 23 points 3 days ago (1 children)

People who vote, might end up voting for the “wrong candidate”, and we can’t have that now can we. People who enlist, don’t really have the opportunity to screw up like that.

[–] DaMummy@hilariouschaos.com 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Don't you worry your pretty little brain. The superdelegates will make the right choice for you.

[–] chaosCruiser@futurology.today 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Exactly. Just trust the system, bro. It’ll be fine.

Jesus fucking christ. Most people who are 42 actually look and act like it. This won't end well.

For instance I'm 29 and I do not have the body of a soldier. Never have, probably never will.

[–] Voroxpete@sh.itjust.works 46 points 3 days ago (8 children)

Canada's enlistment age has been up to 50 for quite some time now. Basic gets you into shape... Or it doesn't, and you fail out.

In the grand scheme of things this really doesn't seem like a big deal. I think it's newsworthy because it reflects a clear anxiety in the US Military about their inability to fill their recruitment numbers, but beyond that It's not really all that unusual.

[–] JordanZ@lemmy.world 16 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Well they already ditched/reduced a bunch of training last year.

Why would you need mentally sound solders…

Additionally, resiliency training has been removed entirely from the list of training tasks necessary for readiness. The training instructed troops on stress-coping measures for everything from individual challenges to dealing with family stress during deployments.

[–] Voroxpete@sh.itjust.works 12 points 2 days ago (1 children)

And that's an actual problem. That's kind of my point; why are people fixating on largely meaningless things like recruitment age, instead of very real problems like ditching mental resiliency training?

[–] Holytimes@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 days ago

No one talks about mental resiliency training and most people who would willing join the military are too fucking retarded or desperate to understand or care.

It also makes for shit headlines cause it doesn't induce enough fear.

I had the body of a soldier, but it took too much space in the freezer.

Yeah, I didn't want to die for an idiot government in my 20s, but now I don't want to and am not getting up and into a warzone. I'm too old for this shit and I'm already in my pajamas. And my feetsies hurt from walking too much and I'm full of cheese.

[–] Entertainmeonly@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Full of cheese you say? Do you know what day of the week it is?

[–] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Oh nos, the confusion has set in. 🤭

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 10 points 2 days ago

I don't care if a bunch of self-delusional 40 year old MAGAs think they're tough enough to go kill all those weak Iranians, and end up getting themselves killed. The more the merrier, as far as I'm concerned.

not enough fools willing to die for the Epstein cause?

[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Who’s dumb enough to need to read an article to know the reason?

[–] ChaoticEntropy@feddit.uk 22 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

It's almost like the younger generations don't feel keen to join whatever misadventure their nation wants to go on during their service. Especially given the high likelihood that they'll be involved in supporting/committing fairly unambiguous war crimes and genocide. They've also watched generation after generation of veterans get sold down the river... how could they resist.

That just means your disappeared and sent to the gulag when your draft notice comes.
