Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Forgot to give the boss his cut

[–] DickFiasco@sh.itjust.works 35 points 1 week ago

That's the real crime here.

More cases of "rules for thee and not for me", of course. You won't see the DOJ arresting anyone in the Trump family making the same kind of bets.

If this guy's lawyer is smart about this, they should ask for discovery on specific instances of insider trading that we know about like the Iran bombing bets made on Kalshi or similar platforms. It would probably be a quick way to get the case dismissed or at least settled out.

You won't see the DOJ arresting anyone in the Trump family making the same kind of bets.

Well, yeah. Polymarket is owned by the Trump family, as is the DOJ.

[–] rayyy@piefed.social 3 points 6 days ago

Maybe not owned, but who knows. The crime family is certainly closely involved with Polymarket . The guy can still buy a pardon if he has enough money. On the other hand, maybe loyal customers are eligible for pardons.

[–] jeffw@lemmy.world 50 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Damn, my money was on “someone Hegseth drunk texted secret plans to”

Edit: wait, could I have actually bet money on this on Polymarkt?

[–] Alexstarfire@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

On Hegseth being drunk? Not quite a free space like Patel, but pretty close.

But yea, you could bet on military actions.

[–] jeffw@lemmy.world -1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

No I mean, could I bet on “who cheated polymarket out of 400k”?

[–] Alexstarfire@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

From what I know about it, probably.

[–] BigMacHole@thelemmy.club 47 points 1 week ago

THIS is the Single person placing HUNDREDS of MILLIONS of Dollars on Bets? That's QRAZY that it's only ONE Person doing all That! OTHERWISE it would be WEIRD that the Government is ONLY Arresting the POOR People doing this!

[–] MintyFresh@lemmy.world 41 points 1 week ago

Lol, poor fool thought he was Epstein class. Only billionaires can do that sort of thing. He's just a lowly meat puppet kept around for violence.

[–] Wilco@lemmy.zip 31 points 1 week ago (1 children)

So Trump and his goons can do it, but a common soldier gets arrested.

[–] Fedizen@lemmy.world 21 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I mean given they were part of a giant child trafficking ring and they're all still alive and free I think its clear to everyone its one set of rules for the wealthy and another for everyone else.

[–] Wilco@lemmy.zip 15 points 1 week ago

I hate that you are right. I also hate this world we currently live in. Fucking criminals.

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 18 points 1 week ago

So that's who the sacrificial lamb will be who will take the heat for the way bigger majority of opportunistic trash that were in on it. Good move criminals...for now.

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 16 points 1 week ago

So they have to pay it back plus fines, right?

[–] Stern@lemmy.world 16 points 1 week ago

His plan had one fatal weakness. His last name wasn't Trump.

[–] favoredponcho@lemmy.zip 13 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Now do the administration

[–] broja@piefed.social 12 points 1 week ago

Criming is for the DOJ and billionaires.

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

Can't have the poors getting uppity.

[–] SocialMediaRefugee@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

So they saw unusual amounts of activity on these prediction bets and likely subpoenaed the accounts involved. If the guy had been smart about it he would've had someone he knew put the bet in return for splitting the winnings. Make sure you aren't associated on social media or geographically close.

[–] IronBird@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

this admin will probably pardon him, and there before they do baron and co. probably throw up a polymarket for it.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

When will they arrest the traitors in Washington who "luckily" bet on war events in the middle east?

[–] kbobabob@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

This guy tried to steal money from polymarket and they weren't having any of that. Immediately turned over every bit of evidence to the US justice department.

[–] Hacksaw@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 week ago

You can't steal from polymarket. The odds are such that they always make money regardless of outcomes. The odds average such that the winners share the losers money less the polymarket cut.

[–] undefined@lemmy.hogru.ch 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)
[–] lobut@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Thank you!

I was on yahoo from another article and just linked the first one I saw. This is much better!

[–] HellsBelle@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Best to use the original rather than an aggregate like yapoo.

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Unless the original is paywalled and Yahoo isn't.

[–] HellsBelle@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago

Then there will always be other sources that aren't paywalled and aren't an aggregate.

[–] Tronn4@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

Arresting him becuase he didn't share with the higher ups

[–] lemmyng@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Trump: "Listen, I'll make you a $400,000 offer you can't refuse."

[–] Iconoclast@feddit.uk 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Lemmy complains when people trade with insider information and Lemmy also complains when people get arrested for trading with insider information.

It's almost like some people just live to complain.

[–] cheers_queers@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 week ago

its about the hypocrisy
