I know it’s some sort of gas bottle, but I’m hoping someone can be more specific based on the brass tap on top.

I'd shoot it with a gun just to be safe.

Don't forget the safety squint and the safety flip flops!

I just get thick plastic prescription glasses as my every days, cause I know I forget my squints at home all the time.

From point blank range, of course.

Looks like the same fittings/valves as Primus gas cylinders for camping.

Random link to some camping site for comparison

I think you are correct. !solved

[–] TheFrogThatFlies@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago

[–] funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 week ago

If you don't know whether it contains flammable gasses or not, remember you've got to get the flame really close to the nozzle or it might not ignite and you'll never know for sure.

It has rusted enough that there are holes in it. Seriously doubt it contains anything other than water

[–] Darkassassin07@lemmy.ca 24 points 1 week ago

Does it at least taste like fresh water?

[–] rizzothesmall@sh.itjust.works 14 points 1 week ago

Is it buried deep into the ground or is that all of it with like a flat bottom? If latter then it's a camp stove gas can

[–] undrwater@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

My suspicion is it could be almost ANY kind of gas cylinder.

Least likely is AIR. Doesn't look like a scuba cylinder.

That leaves medical, military, and scientific applications. Where are you, and where was this cylinder found?

[–] TheFermentalist@reddthat.com 14 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Australia, and in the bush adjacent to my house. I live on acreage with no neighbours in that direction. Won’t be military, not even historically.

[–] SaneMartigan@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I reckon that's an old gas valve on top. Does it turn?

[–] TheFermentalist@reddthat.com 7 points 1 week ago

No, no movement at all

[–] barnacul@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

That's obviously a hemisphere

[–] IWW4@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 week ago

It is a propane/LP gas can.

One of Aquaman's balls. Fell off. Someone put a tap in it, because it's a well known fact Aquaman's balls are full of fresh water. Yes, you'd think seawater, but it's filtered through his swim bladder.

[–] ushmel@piefed.world 6 points 1 week ago

How close is it to the house? Do you have a gas line in your neighborhood? Could be a natural gas tank for a stove or water heater. I think in some places, trucks go around and fill them. I believe they also have overflow tanks scattered around for underground lines.

Nah it's a fermenting vessel for baked beans. Best hooch you'll ever try.

[–] TheFermentalist@reddthat.com 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

That’s what my wife thought too

[–] daggermoon@piefed.world 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You should listen to her. She's trying to save you.

Are you sure you have the full details of the conversation?

“Maybe it’s a landmine? Get rid of it, I don’t want it in the yard. Here’s a shovel.”

[–] who@feddit.org 4 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Does cleaning the cylinder reveal any markings stamped into it?

Cleaning an unidentified rusty cylinder is something I would advise against.

Some vigorous grinding will surely solve the problem!

(That's a joke, don't do that)

[–] TheFermentalist@reddthat.com 5 points 1 week ago

It’s full of holes. And water. At least I think it’s water

[–] TheFermentalist@reddthat.com 6 points 1 week ago

It’s falling apart. Cleaning only flakes bits off

[–] Typotyper@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago

Could there be an old bomb shelter bunker there.
