What tools would you like to see to keep your kids safe online?

I have a bunch of different apps/services that I need to configure and monitor for my kids. Each has their own controls, terminology, login, etc. It sucks. I'm technically inclined, so I feel like I'm better positioned than most parents to deal with it.

Let's pretend you could mandate standards. What tools would make online safety easier for you to manage?

I've got a bunch:

  • It should be possible to manage my kids' access to all services from third party apps. Like, I want to say "no voice comms anywhere" without having to fuss with each terrible janky UI.

  • There should be required messaging standards. Let me choose emails (or texts, or whatever) for friend requests, weekly summaries, etc.

  • Tell me who manages my kids' friends accounts.

  • There should be a standard, easy easy to register an account for parental controls. I don't want to dig through out-of-date support docs to try and figure out how to link my account to my kids' accounts.

How did your parents do it?

They didn't. I don't want my kids to repeat my experience.

Make online time fully supervised. I don't expect any online service to protect my kids.

God do I hate to have to say this, but it would probably be more beneficial to ask this on a more popular social media platform. Most people here are probably more tech literate than the average bear.
