"Everything" was supposed to mean chores, not art and all the other stuff that makes life worth living.

Also, there's this whole "having to earn a living" thing that we haven't gotten rid of yet.

Because AI doesn't do shit for you, not in reality.

The fantasy was a world in which all needs are met because of AI.

The reality is AI is massacring jobs and being put in charge of systems it is fundamentally unfit to work in. Its also poisoning our environment, skyrocketing energy costs and computer parts, while also being used for mass surveillance.

What is with all this bullshit pro-AI slop propaganda I've been seeing on Lemmy, lately? Been seeing lots of mfers invade these communities and spread bullshit.

I mean, it was a fantasy.

In the fantasy, AI would be doing the stuff you DIDN'T want to do. Any time it freed up meant you'd get paid the same, just work less.

Obviously the second point was obviously not how it'd pan out... but in the fantasy it did.

When the rubber hits the road, the reality crushes the fantasy. A lot of the work it's doing is stuff people were passionate about doing. And obviously the tooling is being used to buttfuck everyone on the planet to enrich like 1000 people.

For a great many things and people, the fantasy is better than the reality. It's the same general concept of life lessons like "Don't meet your heros" and "You can never go home". I'm frankly envious of people who are confused by this.

I'll only be happy when they make an AI powered robot that can do the dishes and laundry for me

[–] NarrativeBear@lemmy.world 14 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

I can't really get behind a "do all robot" that wanders my house fully autonomously.

What I would prefer is single purpose robots, mounted or bolted in place, designed to do one thing well.

For example, robot arms that put laundry into the laundry machine, or robot arms that do the cooking in the kitchen. Something similar to how Tesla had that autonomous plug in "snake" charger once you parked in your garage.

Having a fully autonomous robot walking around the house is somewhat unnerving to my TBH.

I’ve seen a LOT of dystopian sci-fi with ai robots and not a lot of utopian sci-fi (even a struggling utopia) sort of at all, so yeah, hard agree on the single-purpose non-ai non-IoT robots. We already have so many of them, they just aren’t able to load themselves yet, though many can turn themselves on when programmed.

Also just massively easier to make, fewer things to go wrong. Locomotion, for one. If it never really has to move, or never off track, that massively simplifies the design and maintenance. Now it just needs proximity sensors instead of whole-area mapping technology.

The AI people imagined was a lot more competent than LLMs ...

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 16 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

Sam Altman: and I think we can pay people in compute power. Like they'll get tokens that they can then use on the intelligence.

Thats why tho

I mean that american billionaire says that doesn't mean the tech behind it is bad.

AI isn't closed, there is a huge open source community

[–] becausechemistry@piefed.social 3 points 6 hours ago

That’s true! There are plenty of other reasons why the technology is bad.

[–] lIlIlIlIlIlIl@lemmy.world 7 points 8 hours ago (2 children)

People don’t yet understand this very simple fact

I run my own models, on my own hardware. There’s nothing tech-bro about it

[–] MousePotatoDoesStuff@piefed.social 1 points 55 minutes ago

Unfortunately, big tech soured the entire field. Your fight is with them, not with regular people having imperfect yet understandable human reactions to that.

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 5 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

People dont care. When the man being thrown billions and asking for trillions is saying he wants to bring back company scrip, thats gonna piss people off. And it should.

[–] TheMightyCat@ani.social 7 points 7 hours ago (2 children)

And Flock is building a surveillance state by using cameras, do people get pissed of at concept of cameras? No so why is AI special?

Yes people should get pissed off, at the billionaires, at the government, but why at the tech itself?

[–] MousePotatoDoesStuff@piefed.social 1 points 46 minutes ago

Because of all the other stuff connected to "AI" that pisses people off. Deepfakes, slop, interview algorithms, threats to livelihood, big data mass surveillance, autonomous weapons used for human rights violations, ...

You can try to convince people not to hate the technology itself, but you'd be putting the cart before the horse. We need to deal with the cause of the problem first.

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 2 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Nobody said cameras were going to take all your jobs and then acted upon it. Seems not comparable.

[–] TheMightyCat@ani.social 1 points 5 hours ago (2 children)

Ah the luddite argument.

I'm quite happy AI is taking my job, now all I have to do is supervise a bunch of AI agents who do the work for me while I can do things I actually enjoy doing.

And my boss likes it too because things that used to take an day now take at max an hour.

The problem is that, to most people, the idea of AI doing their job seems like a threat to their livelihoods given the current system. And it's a reasonable concern to have.

[–] Sanctus@anarchist.nexus 2 points 5 hours ago

Yeah except most people get fucking fired and not a nice relaxing day. I dont think defending the arts is a Luddite argument. Yes, use it on your boring ass spreadsheets. Let's not replace actors with AI. Theres a place for humans in existence.

[–] Rod_Orm@piefed.world 2 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

This statement remind me of cryptocurrency

[–] MousePotatoDoesStuff@piefed.social 1 points 44 minutes ago

They're basically the same "adapt or be left behind" hype
