How I look at those knowing I walked to the store

Me, an intellectual: pulls forward into an empty space from the space behind it so I don't have to reverse at all

[–] dankm@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 week ago

To me that counts as backing in. The purpose of backing in is making it safer for everybody when you leave your spot.

This!

At the train station I see so many people backing into spots when they could’ve just driven through in others. Is it a lack of intelligence, or are people just on auto-pilot trying to get to work that they just don’t think there is an easier way?

How I look at everyone else when I back into my parking spot

I don’t understand the need to back in at all? When modern cars have parking sensors and reversing cameras you shouldn’t need to, especially as it holds everyone up while you’re doing it.

Also, if you back into a parking spot at the grocery store, now you have to try to load your groceries hoping the person that parks behind you doesn't pull up close.

This is a very dumb way to park at the grocery store.

I don't understand people who back in places... It's way easier to back out than it is to back in, even if you don't have any problem backing in, what is the point?

[–] Thrawn@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Safety. It improves visibility when pulling out and with backup cameras you lose no visibility pulling in.

I'll gladly take that trade every time.

The only way that might not be true is if your vehicle has an insanely large/long nose. If it does you shouldn't be driving it anyway.

Why wouldnt a backup camera also provide visibility when backing out? I've also never had a problem backing out with just mirrors and windows.

[–] papalonian@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Backup camera can't see around the cars on either side of you as well as you can peer around the corners. People also generally have an easier time reacting to things, judging speed and distance etc when looking at it directly, not through a screen.

At the end of the day it's really just personal preference. I'll come out and say I back into spots when I'm driving my cool fun car because I think the car looks cooler from the front. When I drive the beater I just do whatever is convenient.
