1. Relevant commentary on your own dull life. Posts should be about your own dull, lived experience. This is our most important rule. Direct questions, random thoughts, comment baiting, advice seeking, many uses of "discuss" rarely comply with this rule.

2. Original, Fresh, Meaningful Content.

3. Avoid repetitive topics.

4. This is not a search engine
Use a search engine, a tradesperson, Reddit, friends, a specialist Facebook group, apps, Wikipedia, an AI chat, a reverse image search etc. to answer simple questions or identify objects. Also see rule 1, “comment baiting”.

There are a number of content specific communities with subject matter experts who can help you.

Some other communities to consider before posting:

5. Keep it dull. If it puts us to sleep, it’s on the right track. Examples of likely not dull: jokes, gross stuff (including toes), politics, religion, royalty, illness or injury, killing things for fun, or promotional content. Feel free to post these elsewhere.

6. No hate speech, sexism, or bullying No sexism, hate speech, degrading or excessively foul language, or other harmful language. No othering or dehumanizing of anyone or negativity towards any gender identity.

7. Proofread before posting. Use good grammar and punctuation. Avoid useless phrases. Some examples: - starting a post with "So" - starting a post with pointless phrases, like "I hope this is allowed" or “this is my first post” Only share good quality, cropped images. Do not share screenshots of images; share the original image.

Redecked a dock. The pressure washing at the end was the most satisfying part. Happily there was very little rot on the 2x6 runners and none on the 4x4 posts. I think it'll look great with some of that deck repair paint glopped on!

That’s some big dock energy

Very nice job! Please tell me you placed a Halloween skeleton under one of the planks lol

[–] WhiteOakBayou@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Too many cypress knees. Almost no space under there. I'm going to have to raise or raze the whole thing in less then ten years I'm estimating

How many docks would a dock deck, if a dock could deck docks?

[–] WhiteOakBayou@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

How many docks did a deck dock, if a dock did deck docks

[–] Bluewing@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That's some nice work! I like it being around the tree. You shined it up really pretty!

But this is a redneck dock.

A couple of old running gears from disused hay racks out in the grove, some welded up tubing and galvanized pipe. I built that thing 15 years ago.

[–] WhiteOakBayou@lemmy.world 1 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

That's really cool. I'm trying to be a better welder so I can do stuff like that too. Do you wheel it into the water or are the wheels for mowing under it?

[–] Bluewing@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

I built it on the running gears to make it easy to put in and take out. Takes 5 minutes with the tractor to wheel it in and pull it out all by myself.

[–] WhiteOakBayou@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago

I see. Very cool!

hah, I've seen that movie ! the chronicles of redeck

[–] billwashere@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

“Redecked a dock” is just fun to say.

[–] KingGordon@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago

Hell yeah, brother!

[–] Lighttrails@sh.itjust.works 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Looks great. Can I come over and cast a line? I’ll bring a 6 pack and a trout whistle

[–] WhiteOakBayou@lemmy.world 5 points 4 days ago

No trout in here but you're free to come drink and whistle. Obligatory John Prine - Whistle and Fish

But have you ever redocked a deck?

[–] bigbangdangler@reddthat.com 2 points 3 days ago

Is it even possible? Once you make it a dock does it stop being a dock? Maybe if the water dries up, but you refill it, you've redocked a deck.

I thought the yellow drill was a rubber duck for a moment so it'd be a duck dock redeck. Not phallic enough for other vowels.

You can say that title with a dentist in your mouth

That final photo: the work was worth it that dock is gorgeous. Dock party?

[–] WhiteOakBayou@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Eventually. Always something else to finish before I can celebrate!

[–] Reverendender@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Can I ask how much that ran you? I have a small front porch and steps I need to do the same thing with.

[–] WhiteOakBayou@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

$375 for the wood, fasteners and paint and a roller. To build from scratch it'd be about double that.

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 days ago

Came here to ask about the structure/foundation holding everything up. It was answered. Looks good!

[–] Landless2029@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Oof looks great!

My back porch needs work... Some of the runners must've had rot because there's pieces cut out and extra wood tacked on. Looks shoddy and boards give in from above.

[–] WhiteOakBayou@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I fixed some of these by patching the runners similarly to your description, affixing and then cutting out all the rot until I got back to good wood and putting wood hardener in. It can definitely be just as strong. My thought on it though is if you already have all the boards off replacing the runners is just as much work as cutting and patching. I'm a big believer in sizing things to whatever length my boards are though to try and minimize cutting (work) whenever possible.

[–] Landless2029@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

In my case my back porch is elevated so I walked under and can see the work previously done.

I'm probably going to hire someone to do it right. Not sure if patching or replacing is required.

One of the posts needs reinforcement. Crappy concrete pour is loose.

[–] WhiteOakBayou@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

I'd hire someone too if it was high enough to walk under. I've seen too many deck and porch fail videos online to feel comfortable doing that myself.

[–] solidheron@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Hopefully you used good varnish

[–] WhiteOakBayou@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)
[–] solidheron@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Very nice and beautiful.

I put varnish on cheap pallet would stuff and it's lasted at least 2 years. It just turned a little grey

[–] WhiteOakBayou@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

If I would have thought It'd clean up so nice I probably would have used a varnish but I was not optimistic on how it would all clean up

[–] solidheron@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 days ago

Just realized I've been talking about Lacquer this entire time. I like like the varnish, but I'm more concerned about Lacquer
