First sentence:

A recent study published in The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry suggests that a single dose of psilocybin, paired with psychological support, may rapidly and safely reduce chronic suicidal thoughts in adults with severe depression.

Study conclusion statement:

In this open-label single-arm study of adults with chronic suicidal ideation and prior treatment failures, a single administration of psilocybin with psychological support was associated with rapid, large-magnitude, and durable reductions in suicidal ideation and depressive symptoms through 12 weeks. These preliminary findings support further evaluation in larger randomized controlled trials.

I believe that a single beneficial psychedelic trip can potentially light up new mental pathways that facilitate healing. And it can also go very very permanently wrong for people whose families have predispositions for schizophrenia or other major social disorders, or just randomly do forever damage to the way your brain processes data from the optic nerve and we don’t really know how to predict it.

your beliefs in the second paragraph are mostly just FUD. similar to the old horror stories around THC/CBD.

There are many benefits for experiencing altered states of awareness, including opportunities for pain management, reduced fears of death and dying, and increased access to personal insight and development.

And also, choices in every area of our lives can have trade-offs and risks. It is important for all of us to have an accurate understanding of the advantages and potential disadvantages of any choices that we might make.

One specific danger that people should be aware of, especially anyone in their teenage years or early twenties who has a family history of schizophrenia, is that cannabis use can activate an underlying condition if a person has a predisposition for this.

The exact functions of this connection, called the Dopamine Theory, are still not fully understood, but enough evidence has been observed that people who may be vulnerable in this way should understand an accurate picture of the risk.

Here are a few articles on the subject.

As I said classic FUD. I didnt say it has no risks but certainly not to the level people are implying here. just talk to your fing doctor people if you have concerns before trying it. not hard.

Psychonauts have talked about the importance of set and setting for ages. He's talking about the same stuff with different vocabulary. These drugs can have real effects, it's important to be mindful of the risks.

as i said similar to the old horror stories surrounding THC/CBD. you can also have terrible adverse reactions to antibiotics. psilocybin has a decent and researched safety profile. the set and setting is so you dont have a shitty time while tripping. set and setting is definitely important but not for the reasons your implying.

[–] cattywampus@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Under the right settings, most definitely. Under the wrong ones it can definitely be the opposite.

[–] sixtoe@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 2 days ago

Like when you're being genocided. Impossible to get the right set and setting.

[–] liuther9@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago (2 children)

What kind of settings that should be? Never seen anyone who wanted to sepuku on acids

One where the cops don't come busting through the door because you're freaking out and the neighbor called. Ideally with a trip sitter in a place you feel comfortable, i personally would suggest somewhere natural and far away from other people.

There are contraindications.
