Rules:

  1. The mods are fallible; if you've been banned or had a post/comment removed, please appeal.
  2. Off-topic posts will be removed. If you don't know what "Leopards ate my Face" is, try reading this post.
  3. If the reason your post meets Rule 1 isn't in the source, you must add a source in the post body (not the comments) to explain this. If the reason is in the source but is tedious to find (e.g. in a lengthy video), you must add an explanation for where it is.
  4. Posts should use high-quality sources (for a rough idea, check out this list), and posts should retain the title (if one exists) from works like news articles, videos, etc. You may (but need not) edit your post if the source changes the title. (If you're only using an excerpt from an article that's otherwise not about LAMF, you can use the quote in the title.) Other types of posts should have a title which accurately, relatively neutrally describes their contents.
  5. For accessibility reasons, an image of text must either have alt text or a transcription in the post body.
  6. Reposts within 1 year or the Top 100 of all time are subject to removal. Within moderator discretion, this doesn't just include reposts of the exact same media but also includes e.g. a secondary source telling basically the exact same story as another that was already posted.
  7. This is not exclusively a US politics community. You're encouraged to post stories about anyone from any place in the world at any point in history as long as you meet the other rules.

He surrendered and paid Iran.

Don't sugar coat the surrender part.

[–] Rothe@piefed.social 38 points 1 week ago (2 children)

He made a handful of billionaires/trillionaires a lot of money. He fucked up things for the rest of the world.

[–] Kirp123@lemmy.world 22 points 1 week ago

He made himself and his family a lot of money. His dumb son is so brazen he was asking if any of the UFC fights at the White House were rigged so he could bet on them. The whole family is rotten beyond redemption.

[–] A_norny_mousse@piefed.zip 2 points 1 week ago

Yes, but why did he do that? Personal gain for his purse & ego. Not America. It's sad that it took his followers a full decade to even start realizing that. Some of them.

I find the term "Absolutely nothing" a bit loose. Negative achievements are still achievements.

[–] homes@piefed.world 10 points 1 week ago

They’re called “losses” and “failures”

[–] A_norny_mousse@piefed.zip 1 points 1 week ago
(War, huh) Good God, y'all
(What is it good for?) Absolutely nothin'
Say it again
(War, huh) Woah, woah, lord, lord
(What is it good for?) Absolutely nothin'
Listen to me

Achieving “absolutely nothing” is a criminal understatement…

The US just lost. In a war against Iran.

[–] Brainsploosh@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Seems a pattern tbh, expensive toys lead to expensive mistakes?

[–] metermatic26@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

You could argue that its cultural. The US has always been a country that values opportunism and individualism. Both parties appeal to people’s feelings of national identity or manifest destiny, only to then skillfully curb the narrative back to personal freedom and personal responsibility.

When you teach people to value self-sufficiency and individualism, you get a populace that is mostly apolitical. Good luck trying to mobilize those people for any sort of grand project that requires a lot of personal sacrifice over many years.

[–] Brainsploosh@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I would argue that the rise of Christo-fascism contradicts you. As well as the prevailing conservative movement.

But I do agree that the US somehow has less than expected populism due to these movements. With what you describe, any promise in alignment with self interests should do well. Yet currently a majority is grumbling that everything's been going against that for 50+ years, and yet the big political shifts haven't been to popular-concession-du-jour, but to expanding/retracting social democratic reforms.

I would argue the US populace is heavily propagandised, to the point of propaganda exhaustion, and apolitical for that reason more than because of any independence from the state.

This in turn is excellent breeding ground for sycophants and cronies in power, which would explain the repeatedly poor results in international dealings where power selection might have more bias towards competency.

Trump administration is repeatedly outmaneuvered by Russia, Canada, Mexico, China and now Iran. Notable examples also cover UAE, Israel, North Korea, EU, India and Japan. And the US has had a massive upper hand going into those situations. The fall of the petro-dollar was unimaginable (before a post-oil world) 5 years ago, and yet it's now a real possibility (pending logistical issues of the new currency), and with the dismantling of US soft influence, increasingly inevitable.

none of this is new though

I'll tell you what's at the bottom of it. If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you. -Lyndon B. Johnson

Trump's just adopted that mantra

[–] potter2010@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago

I think the USA still calls them wins, regardless of the outcome.

lol Israel is 100% going to spike this “deal”

Since April, the White House has not replied to requests for further information about Trump’s inability to achieve world peace. Trump has also failed to accomplish even his more modest goal, as the region remains mired in conflict. Israel continued its war on Lebanon on Sunday and said it was not involved in the new pact. “Trump’s agreement does not bind us. … We are not party to this agreement,” Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir wrote on Telegram on Sunday.

To wit, last I checked they’re still bombing the shit out of Lebanon

[–] Kirp123@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Trump gave Iran a great deal just so he could announce the peace on his dumb birthday. If the US keeps their end of the deal (it's Trump after all) Iran may also keep theirs and leave Lebanon be for now. They aren't doing that well on the homefront as the IS has been bombing military targets and civilian infrastructure. The hits on civilian infrastructure especially will have worsened the internal unrest that Iran was dealing with before the war start. We also don't know how much control the new Ayatollah has over the country as he has basically been in hiding all this time to avoid being assassinated by the US or Israel. The peace deal would allow them to start rebuilding and focus their efforts fully on dealing with internal unrest. And they could also just use the new funds that will be unfrozen by the new deal to covertly fund Hezbollah and have them fight against Israel in Lebanon.

But yea it's a shit deal and it will most likely get worse for everyone.

[–] Nonconfrontational@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 week ago

An end to Israeli hostility in Lebanon is one of the 14 points of the deal, if Israel continues, the deal will be null.

[–] Doomsider@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Oh darn, another round of stock manipulation. I am sure Trump and company will wipe away their tears with all their money.

[–] D_C@sh.itjust.works 13 points 1 week ago

Hey, HEY. They bombed a school and killed, what, 173(?) schoolchildren.
I bet they are quite happy with that achievement!!!

[–] A_norny_mousse@piefed.zip 8 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Hmm, I always thought Trump was the leopard. But I'm not opposed to his face being eaten, so how exactly would that work here?

[–] Fuckfuckmyfuckingass@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago (2 children)
[–] SharkWeek@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 week ago

Have you seen a man eat his own head?

[–] Tolookah@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 week ago

He should throw it against the wall when he's angry. I'm sure maga will pay huge money for "shrouds of trump" where his face hits and leaves face shaped Cheeto stains

[–] cynar@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

The leopard stuck its face into an industrial cheese grater. Then complained it attacked first.

[–] GreenShimada@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Hey now, he did achieve something - sending $300B in tax dollars to fund a bunch of people that shout "Death to America!"

Wait....isn't that considered terrorism under NSPM-7?

[–] ruuster13@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Most Iranians do NOT shout "death to America"... but yeah, he sent money to the ones who do.

[–] GreenShimada@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

Sorry, I meant that not exactly in sarcasm, but from the insane perspective of MAGA idiots

[–] aquovie@lemmy.cafe 2 points 1 week ago

I'm darkly amused that the citizens of US, Israel, and Iran all share a lot in common. And chief among those is that our governments are run by power hungry assholes that justify their brutality with religion and DARVO.

Tuxedo mask meme: "my job here is done"

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 5 points 1 week ago

until the markets close again, which he renege on the deal

[–] axh@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

What do you mean achieved nothing? The US disarmament is definitely something!

[–] elucubra@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 week ago

“I hereby fully authorize the toll free opening of the Strait of Hormuz.”

I've been thinking for a few minutes trying to drum up a sarcastic remark, but, I'm simply at a loss.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

The point is that is is not "Absolutely Nothing". It is even worse, it is a big net negative.
