Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

6. Defend your opinion

This is a bit of a mix of rules 4 and 5 to help foster higher quality posts. You are expected to defend your unpopular opinion in the post body. We don't expect a whole manifesto (please, no manifestos), but you should at least provide some details as to why you hold the position you do.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

Reddit has this stereoytipe of being a niche community of insufferable internet chuds while Twitter was seen as more mainstream.

Now nowadays, this is completely different. Maybe it's the generational change and Gen Z men ruined Twitter, but it's like it got invaded by 4Chan mentally unstable losers and edgelords.

Reddit is a much more sensitive place, sometimes even too much, but I prefer people to be overly sensitive or offended over "Haha kill yourself liberal, and fuck women in video games women don't deserve to exist πŸ‘¨πŸ«ƒπŸ»"

Lately it feels like edgelords and trolls are multiplying, they used to be a minority of men no one cared about because they would drown in their own misery. But now they're like the average Instagram/Twitter user and you can see them on YouTube as well posting their opinions on lengthy debates.

I wouldn't say thats an unpopular opinion. It's kinda like saying "This rusty razor blade is better than this pile of dog shit".

Technically you're right. The rusty razor blade might have SOME use to be gained from it. But it's clearly seen better days, and is currently decaying.

Whereas twitter is just dog shit.

Maybe not an unpopular opinion on Lemmy, but it is unpopular to say so irl because of the bad reputation of Reddit

Twitter is literally owned by a Nazi though

In the same sense that chlamydia is much better than syphilis.

You seem to be unaware of the amount of hate people have for Elon Musk, who bought and reshaped Twitter into 𝕏, directing its now–pretty alt-right culture.

Oh forgot about that creep owning Twitter, yeah now my post seems really pointless

Well, for how much they hate it, Lemmy sure likes reposting Tweets.

It’s a good chunk of the posts I see in New Comments or Active.

Twitter ... got invaded by 4Chan mentally unstable losers and edgelords.

I mean, yeah? A mentally unstable edgelord loser bought the platform several years ago and remade it in his unstable, edgelord image. Every other complaint you have about Twitter is explained by that.

They're both raging dumpster fires run by money grubbing soulless monsters. Why would you expect either of them to be any good?

How does Reddit get money from people tho?

[–] MrJameGumb@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Have you been on reddit lately? Their terrible mobile app that you have to use now is overrun with ads. They also have paid membership options, sponsored content that no one actually wants to read etc.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Ads and sponsored content; the same as most everything on the internet. Not to mention the award flairs they sell. πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

[–] choihanna@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 month ago

You're not forced to pay for any of that tho, I'd think only gigachuds would actually pay for a Reddit flair πŸ’€

Not an unpopular opinion, as twitter is the bottom of the barrel/

[–] remon@ani.social 1 points 1 month ago

"X is so much better than Twitter" would be popular for any value of X.

[–] ohlaph@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Since when has twitter been more popular than reddit?

[–] choihanna@lemmy.zip 0 points 1 month ago

Since forever? Everyone irl knows Twitter, that's where all the celebrities are commenting their opinions and it's where all the controversies used to start. Why would you think Reddit is at that level?
