Donation shaming is bad form.

The right move is to give them the credit and move on, because regardless of PR, it is a net positive.

[–] The_Che_Banana@beehaw.org 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Bootlicking the Epstein class is even worse.

The right move is making sure their donation is a pittance of their actual worth and is literal virtue signaling.

[–] Zozano@aussie.zone 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Call it what you want, but $100k is $100k.

For the people who are actually affected, any donation is appreciated.

In any case, do you intend to use shame to force higher donations?

[–] The_Che_Banana@beehaw.org 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Shame? Calling out those whose righteousness is meaningless unless it actually means something to them...then yes.

What I'm saying is, unless it is actually a proportional donation we shouldn't even hear about I, and I bet you they pay thier PR firm more than this pittance of their wealth.

What I'm also trying to make clear is that disproportionate wealth should have disproportionate donations if they truly want to be philanthropic, otherwise its just lip service and should be treated as such.

Buddy, billionaires don't care about whether you shame them.

But they do care about the prestige of looking charitable.

It makes far more sense to play along and let them feel like heroes if it means the next tragedy gets $100k.

Consider this: donation shaming contributes to a cost/benefit analysis.

Consider that Taylor Swift could donate $100k for every single tragedy that occurs this year and be no worse off.

But that would get her more bad press than it's worth. People would say "why does this tragedy get $100k when its obviously far worse" or "The amount of people affected are more than this other tragedy, why are you racist?" Etc.

So, they stay quiet, and even then people get shamed for not using their platform to speak up.

If you actually give a shit about seeing the most amount of money going to help people, you should realise the path forward is to lower the bar to access, and make donation as beneficial as possible to the people donating.

So we should: continue down the path, heads in the sand, cheering when multi billion dollar corporations are fined millions to little effect, lauding the money class when they sprinkle us with trinkets as their wealth managers invest in poor infrastructure and lobbying governments to undo safety regulations that make building deathtraps for the poor....

OR

We can spread awareness that its too little, too late.

Oh please, it's all the same shit, it just depends on how big a bite you want to take.

[–] MummifiedClient5000@feddit.dk 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Credit where credit is due, that is a lot more than what most people have donated.

[–] The_Che_Banana@beehaw.org 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

What is 0.001% of your net worth? I bet %wise you've donated more.

Fuck rich people who donate the bare goddamn minimum and expect us to all sing their praises.

[–] MummifiedClient5000@feddit.dk 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I don't think you understand what I'm trying to say. Most people (musicians, rich people, poor people) have donated nothing. 0% of their net worth. Less than a fart.

I'd love to see rich people take more responsibility and I agree that Metallica could give more too, but at least they gave something, so this is not the time to complain about Metallica specifically. Whine to... i don't know... Limb Bizkit. Tell them that Metallica gave only 100k and it would look douchy to donate less than that.

[–] The_Che_Banana@beehaw.org 2 points 2 days ago

I don't think they need any publicity at all for such a relatively small amount of their net worth.

[–] cerebralhawks@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

That's not quite the Metallica I know and love, but I love that they did it all the same.

Lars and Kirk are kinda dicks and James follows Lars's lead. I wonder if this came from Rob. I know him the least (I was a big fan in the 80s and 90s when Cliff and Jason played bass. Rob is cool but I don't really know much about him).

Fuck Metallica, little bitches whining in court about having their music "stolen" off the radio by tape recorders. Multimillionaire fuckwits that can never satiate their egos.

I think the best thing I ever did was burn all of my metallica stuff and try to forget they ever existed. I personally think they were a supreme embarrassment to metal and music in general. I feel you.

Bob Cesca Good! Bob Rock Bad!

It was people downloading exact copies (or near about that you can't tell) of their CDs on Napster, but sure, don't let the truth get in the way of a good story.

Like I said, Lars is a prick and James follows his lead. They never really cared about bootlegs until people started pirating their albums. They had no idea that was even possible, and I think Lars was right to say such a service should exist but only with the artist's permission.

Anyway, Metallica offer downloads of their shows now. I'm not sure if it's every show, but when I saw them in 2019, like a week after the show, I got my download code. I still have that album on my computer. It's a live recording of the show I was at. And it's a damn good recording. So like, why would you make a crappy bootleg recording when the band will just give you a professional quality recording of the show? I like how they defeated the whole thing. I guess you could argue that the cost of the recording goes into the ticket price, but if you like Metallica, nosebleed seats aren't that expensive (I think it was like fifty bucks?) and since they do pyrotechnics, you don't really wanna be up front or in the snake pit (special middle-of-stage area) anyway, unless you're much younger.

Metallica isn't a problem anymore. Music is kind of a solved problem. You can pay ten bucks a month or thereabouts (often less) for streaming, and it includes damn near everything. Holdouts, like Garth Brooks, are pretty uncommon and notable. For Garth, you can get his CDs at Goodwill and rip them, then if you have Apple Music (maybe others) you can just drop the files on the app and boom, they're in your library, you can even stream them. Because you know Apple has the files, but they'll only stream to those who own the songs. Not just anyone can get them. These days, computers are too small for disc drives, but you can get a CD/DVD burner for like $30 and it'll plug into any computer (or an Android phone, though I'm not sure you can burn/rip with one... wouldn't be surprised though). Use fre:ac, MP4/AAC, low complexity, highest bitrate, it's gonna sound better than MP3 320 at comparable file sizes. Takes minutes to extract the CDDA audio, and you can just run through your collection. Go thrifting, get discs for a buck or so apiece, rip them, donate them back, let the next guy enjoy them.

I thought I'd put it in terms that they'd understand, because they all looked like dipshits who don't understand technology when they testified. But sounds like you're saying they can't even comprehend that, which I'll give you because they are absolutely that stupid.

Fuck Metallica, fuck copyright, fuck capitalism. You're on the wrong instance. Go make your pleas to protect the rich to the db0 mods.
