Ive been using google's services since 2017-2018, now its time to finally depart from that. I just got it in the mail yesterday and I'm already in love with it. So much lighter and easier to carry than my samsung galaxy. Gonna transfer everything over in a sim card, switch to Tmobile and ill be good to go. 😁

Kind of irrelevant but nice album choice

[–] SalmonTractor@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

T-Mobile isn’t the place to switch to. They went evil.

[–] Ripley_Tripley@lemmus.org 1 points 25 minutes ago

Unfortunately, they're the only phone company that we have in the states that accept phones like this. Even with what's going on with the dumbphone and Linux phones market, only choice you have is Tmobile or a carrier that is own by T-Mobile.

[–] diaphragmwp@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 hour ago (2 children)

Erm, I hope you didn't know that someone literally just ran a few commands on an off the shelf phone and increased the price tag.

[–] Ripley_Tripley@lemmus.org 1 points 8 minutes ago* (last edited 4 minutes ago)

If you go to Teracubes website, getting the degoogled version of this phone was only 50 USD more then the regular android version they have, which is nothing in comparison of how much these Linux phones, preinstalled degoogled phones and even dumphones are being sold for. And that too, the tinkering is not easy like most make it out to be, unless you get a Pixel to install Graphene OS (which is what im realizing that most use on here)

Getting this phone lessened the headache by a landslide, and it's the most affordable without spending an arm and leg on a dam phone that might not even work properly (Linux phones) , a phone that is just to expensive (dumbphone), or finding out your tinkering with the wrong model device or completely brick a phone ( I can personally say this is what happened to me when I tried to degoogled my Unihertz Jelly Star)

Again, like I had to tell someone else, not everyone on here is super tech savy. And there's gonna be more people like that coming here, especially with what's going on with Reddit.

[–] sidebro@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 hour ago

Some people just don't like tinkering, or trust themselves enough to do that, and that's okay.

[–] SunshineJogger@feddit.org 1 points 2 hours ago

I just bought a pixel10 that I intend to override with grapheneOS.

I thought thsts an easy way to de-google. Isn't it?

If I had a job I'd buy a One Plus direct from China and put LineageOS on it. I don't need to relock the bootloader since my phone is mainly for browsing and text/calls (no important private stuff). I don't even log into Lemmy on my phone because the PC experience is superior.

Recently I got rid of WhatsApp (now fully deleted my account) plus I removed Signal. My battery life is incredible now. I don't even fast-charge cos I'm too poor and my phone doesn't support any worth-while fast charger anyway! Next step is to get LineageOS and get rid of Google Play Services. Even more performance and battery saving.

[–] dessalines@lemmy.ml 4 points 10 hours ago

It's extrmely easy to degoogle xiaomi phones too, but they're a bit more expensive.

[–] Ripley_Tripley@lemmus.org 4 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

That was actually my first choice I was gonna do as well. I got myself the Nord N200 5g but I unfortunately received the wrong model from Back Market. I returned it and ended up getting this phone for less of a headache to try to find the exact model of a phone in order to install LineageOS. That's my only problem with them.

[–] ChristchurchAsshole@lemmy.ml 1 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Back Market? You don't just order off the One Plus website and ship anywhere in the world?

[–] Ripley_Tripley@lemmus.org 2 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago)

For the US Market, the only phones they have that are available online and even in store are the 15 and 15R.(Really expensive phones BTW) If you want any other model, you gotta go to either Amazon, Back Market, or Best Buy (sometimes you can get an older model from here).

The models for OnePlus are very limited, it used to never be like that.

I saw that wallpaper and at first thought you had degoogled by smashing your phone πŸ˜€

[–] Ripley_Tripley@lemmus.org 3 points 18 hours ago

🀣🀣 No, I wish🀣. its just a cool wallpaper on the Teracube, I still need my other phone until I swItch over.

~~What model of phone? What OS are you running?~~

Is this the A16 5g -> Teracube 2s (Degoogled version with e/OS) you have been waiting for?

[–] cramola@sh.itjust.works 14 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

In the photo caption it says it’s a Teracube 2s running e/OS

[–] RodgeGrabTheCat@sh.itjust.works 18 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

No caption visible for me.

[–] Ripley_Tripley@lemmus.org 3 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

On my screen, in the bottom right of the post before clicking the photo, it says "Atl". when you click it it gives the caption

[–] RodgeGrabTheCat@sh.itjust.works 4 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago) (1 children)

I found the caption but its after clicking the photo in my app. I didn't know about captions on Lemmy, good to know for the next picture, thanks.

Edit: I just noticed on my laptop, if I put the mouse pointer on the picture the caption pops up.

[–] picnic@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Not seeing captions on jerboa

[–] Carrot@lemmy.today 1 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

I'm not on Jerboa, but on Thunder I had to tap the image so it went full screen, and at the bottom of that next to the share and download buttons there was a toggle for turning on the caption, which was off by default.

Something to consider for the future. Meanwhile i'll try graphene os.

[–] merde@sh.itjust.works 22 points 18 hours ago

grapheneOS merits more than a "meanwhile"

[–] RodgeGrabTheCat@sh.itjust.works 9 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

I'm on my second GOS phone. Amazing.

[–] N0t_5ure@lemmy.world 9 points 18 hours ago (3 children)

Same here, but this is my third go-round. I started with a pixel 3, moved to a pixel 6 pro, and now have a pixel 9 pro. Such a great OS! I love that it give you the option to run sandboxed play services. You can be completely de-googled, or can run sandboxed play services if you have to as a necessary evil, but keep them from hoovering up everything else outside of the specific app you need it for. Kind of ironic that it runs on google hardware. Kind of like the Ukrainians capturing Russian tanks and redeploying them against Russia.

[–] RodgeGrabTheCat@sh.itjust.works 3 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago)

I started with the 6a until the battery issue became a problem - phone wouldn't charge. I planned on waiting for a Motorola but I can't go that long without a phone so I bought a 10a on sale. Not sure if I wanted to get an early Moto/GOS, maybe bugs, maybe not.

What annoyed me was as soon as I flashed GOS on the 10a, the 6a would charge again. I'm giving the 6a to my sister, she has a google account so she can look into getting the battery replaced by google. The 6a is pretty much mint while her Samsung has a cracked display.

The Sandboxed gp is one of the best features. There are so many security and privacy features that I could be here half the afternoon typing.

The 10a has one feature I'm interesting in trying out - pass-through charging combined with my Anker hub which has PD charging. I should be able to connect a flat wall-mounted monitor, keyboard and mouse to the phone. Mostly a backup plan if my very old laptop dies.

[–] Ripley_Tripley@lemmus.org 6 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

How do you feel about them partnering up with Motorola? If we can actually get a good phone with that, I might consider.

[–] N0t_5ure@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago

I trust that they know what they're doing and I'd buy one.

As long as their aren't too many security/privacy compromises I think it's great. If I can unlock the bootloader, flash GOS, and relock the bootloader, my next phone will likely be a Moto.

[–] neo2478@sh.itjust.works 5 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Would be more like the Ukrainians buying tanks from Russia and using them elaewhere. Goggle got your money.

[–] N0t_5ure@lemmy.world 2 points 10 hours ago

They don't have my money, I always buy used, typically 6 months after the next generation comes out. I don't need the latest and greatest.

[–] Ripley_Tripley@lemmus.org 6 points 18 hours ago

I did consider that but pixels dont have SD cards, and also its a pixel, I dont want to be bothered with their hardware.

[–] neo2478@sh.itjust.works 3 points 17 hours ago (4 children)

Too bad gos forces you to give money to google. Even buying used, you make pixels an attractive phone to buy new as people know there is a used market to sell it.

[–] hneerqe@lemmy.world 11 points 16 hours ago

I don't agree. While you may give google some upfront money for hardware, when buying new. Installing a degoogled OS effectively removes that device from their claws. Since their revenue from hardware sales is much less than their real business which is data gathering/surveilance capitalism and advertisement network. In one year your data generates them roughly the amount of the retail price of a smartphone. So even buying a pixel to remove google, makes a dent on them.

Their hardware is atleast more secure and allows unlocking. Which is worth paying for and none other manufacturer even considers. That's the only reason GOS is pixel only. And the reason I would give google some slack. Just a tiny bit of slack.

[–] kboy101222@sh.itjust.works 3 points 16 hours ago

I mean, in terms of Android phones that the average person (not average Lemmy user) would have access to, it's Google, Samsung, or Motorola. None of those options are particularly spectacular choices, and all give money to a faceless mega corp in the end.

Tho I do miss my Motorola Z2 from back in the day. The attachments were a really cool gimmick, and I used that phone until the bootloader decided to kill itself one day

[–] BrilliantBadger@piefed.ca 1 points 14 hours ago

Hey google, take some mo' my money to.... Degoogle

Not a single GOS pump you can say to me to willingly hand over a single dollar to google. Instant compromise of values

[–] Ripley_Tripley@lemmus.org 10 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Yep, I brought it from Murena.

[–] ropatrick@lemmy.world 4 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Cool. Didnt realise there was an option to buy a degoogled phone until I saw your post! I wish you well with it.

[–] eldavi@lemmy.ml 3 points 13 hours ago (2 children)

Murena is not the only place to buy degoogled phones in case you didn't know.

I'm planning on getting a Motorola w graphene once it becomes available.

If it's too expensive, I'm going to get a brax phone, which is running lineage like op's new phone is.

[–] ropatrick@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago (1 children)
[–] eldavi@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 hour ago

Now you know and if you see someone else express ignorance about it, you can help them out like I wish someone had done for me.

[–] Ripley_Tripley@lemmus.org 1 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

The Teracube is running e/OS.

[–] eldavi@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago)

eos is murena's version of lineage and i suspect that most degoogled phone vendors use their own version of lineage. I know that Brax does.

You can also put lineage on a phone yourself instead of buying it that way. Ditto w graphene.
