Community rules (click to expand)

1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry of any kind will not be tolerated. This is an LGBTQ+-friendly community -- if that is a problem for you, you should leave.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • Don't come looking for advice, this is not the right community.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves / tolerates / hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.
  • 5. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ Language/язык/Sprache
  • This is primarily an English-speaking community. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§πŸ‡¦πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ
  • Comments written in other languages are allowed.
  • The substance of a post should be comprehensible for people who only speak English.
  • Titles and post bodies written in other languages will be allowed, but only as long as the above rule is observed.
  • 6. (NEW!) Regarding public figuresWe all have our opinions, and certain public figures can be divisive. Keep in mind that this is a community for memes and light-hearted fun, not for airing grievances or leveling accusations.
  • Keep discussions polite and free of disparagement.
  • We are never in possession of all of the facts. Defamatory comments will not be tolerated.
  • Discussions that get too heated will be locked and offending comments removed.

Please report posts and comments that break these rules!

Important: never execute code or follow advice that you don't understand or can't verify, especially here. The word of the day is credibility. This is a meme community -- even the most helpful comments might just be shitposts that can damage your system. Be aware, be smart, don't remove France.

I was almost at the point earlier of asking someone if they could help with a wifi card issue, but so glad I don't have to now. I always feel like I always bungle something up whenever I try to explain what my problem is and/or paste any logs or whatever is needed to help, so I relate to this meme.

Thank goodness for ethernet and my ability to realize I need to add that ethernet connection as a new internet connection. Now I can have internet access and be able to use it to research a card that not only fits, but also works with linux.

Haha good work! It's good to have fall backs, I'm currently using my phone as a wifi hotspot connected to my computer via USB for an internet connection because I didn't want a wifi motherboard and my old cheap mesh network set I thought was not secure enough to keep using

You only get the phone call if you're on ARM.

So what we're saying is that the Linux developer community is generally bad at writing log messages and error descriptions.

I mean, it could most definitely be better, but I really don't think that it's worse on Linux. Error handling is one of the hard problems in computer science in general.

And well, at least you do get easy access to logs and error messages on Linux, which makes it infinitely better in many ways, but is also at least partially why this post exists.
On Windows or such, you'd instead put a vague description into a search engine and hope someone had the same symptoms before...

The "fixes" on Windows are always

    Step 1) Run antivirus

    Step 2) sfc /scannow

    Step 3) reinstall Windows

    Hey, that's not true!

Tap for spoilerYou also run "DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth" on step 2.

Yeah, lol. At least the log says things that might be vaguely useful. Instead of some Windows app that tells you Something went wrong :( and that's all you get.

At least MSVC has a number for every diagnostic that you can search.
