Wait until you see the new 9050 with 4gbvram and 64bit memory lane. Fraudulent naming convention really.

[–] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 4 points 15 hours ago

4GB is perfectly viable for 2026 since the only games worth playing are indie titles :3

I feel good to have gotten a 9070XT. I also suspect it's going to be hanging around as my gaming GPU for about a decade...

Duopoly is as duopoly does.

[–] 87Six@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Duopoly? Intel is viable nowadays too. But people look at amd and nvidia the same way they look at gucci and whatever.

We gotta forget brands already. Especially when there's an option as good as Intel is right now.

Which Intel GPU is competitive? Benchmark/testing links?

[–] 87Six@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 23 hours ago)

This is a comparison I made for myself a few months ago, in Romania.

As you can see the B580 is fairly competitive considering the price.

I looked on the site pcgarage.ro exclusively, though you can usually get better deals on smaller eshops that take more time to deliver. (If you want to check for yourself use the filters not the search. The search on their site is crap.)

Also, considering the intent of both AMD and NVIDIA is to release puny GPU's with 4 and 8 GB of VRAM, intel is very relevant here.

If the price of those dogshit GPU's comes up to anything close to 1600 RON as the B580 is, the B580 will outperform them in probably every conceivable way, bar reputation.

Also, older gen cards exist. Intel can beat those sometimes. I know people that were looking to buy second hand in my area but ended up buying a new Arc card. They're decent options if the budget is tight and you get something that you know hasn't been abused in some way (I'm looking at you smokers and vapers haha)

Competitive with what?

https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gpu-hierarchy,4388.html

At price point it's beating everything with RX 9060 XT 8GB being close.

[–] andyburke@fedia.io 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

If I'm reading this right, you could spend $50 more ($300 vs. $250 for the Intel) for a 9060 and get an almost 50% perf improvement.

This seems to say that if your limit is the dollars, the Intel cards may be a semi-workable option, but I guess it hinges a lot on your definition of "viable."

[–] 87Six@lemmy.zip 5 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

I replied to something similar here https://lemmy.zip/post/68876302/27983780

But yea, intel is only competitive on the low end. But that is perfectly fine. 3rd world countries exist. We like Arc here.

[–] DdCno1@beehaw.org 1 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

How's compatibility with older games these days? I remember drivers having trouble with games that aren't among the typical titles used for benchmarking being a surprising weakness of Intel cards.

[–] 87Six@lemmy.zip 1 points 21 hours ago

I heard it's improved but idk, I don't own one myself

[–] yesman@lemmy.world 38 points 2 days ago (1 children)

This is ridiculous. I recently bought a card at $100 more than launch price and I'm starting to feel like I got a good deal.

[–] lolrightythen@lemmy.world 19 points 2 days ago (4 children)

How can they justify the price raises?

Do their production costs also go up or is it just "fuck you, you'll buy it"?

[–] doublah@sopuli.xyz 11 points 1 day ago

GPUs use VRAM

[–] utjebe@reddthat.com 24 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

They just don't care about this segment anymore. Th money is elsewhere.

[–] AstralPath@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Except the money elsewhere isn't even real.

[–] omarfw@lemmy.world 1 points 18 hours ago

fiat money isn't real

Just for anyone who sees your comment but doesn't get what you mean: AMD's revenue is 44% hardware related. They're an ai company. They own multitudes of small scale slop farms

Edit: gross exaggeration

[–] 87Six@lemmy.zip 15 points 2 days ago

I... I don't think they have to justify it

[–] BillyTheKid2@lemmy.ca 10 points 2 days ago

All they care about is money. They don't care about justifying prices at all.

[–] darcmage@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 2 days ago

On one hand, I'm pleasantly surprised it's rumoured to be only 10% with memory price inflation being much higher. On the other hand, how big was the markup on MSRP that they can withstand the memory price increases with "only" a 10% price hike?

Just handing China their chip sales

[–] DdCno1@beehaw.org 1 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

China isn't competitive yet and might never actually be, given that they are playing catch up with moving targets.

[–] dreamkeeper@literature.cafe 2 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

They've been closing the gap for years now. They're still behind but last I heard their top card was equivalent to a 4060 which is actually viable for a lot of people.

[–] DdCno1@beehaw.org 1 points 2 hours ago

No. Chinese GPUs have been complete disasters for gaming. Instead of the claimed 4060 competitor, the one you are referring to (which is the most powerful) struggles to compete with a 660 Ti from 2012.

https://www.howtogeek.com/are-chinese-gpus-coming-to-eat-nvidias-lunch/

They might be more useful for AI, but as of right now, they are extremely far behind in the GPU space, far more so than in most other areas.

it already has viable ram, i would know since im running it on the pc im speaking to you now with. 8gb a piece

[–] DdCno1@beehaw.org 1 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

I've heard of CXMT RAM and it appears to be solid in the few tests that exist, but by 'viable' I meant commercially viable. Even with current RAM prices (where their stuff is barely any cheaper than reputable brands), I don't know how much they rely on subsidies from the Chinese state. Production capacity appears to be limited, with one issue being relatively low yields, just 80% for DDR5. They are also using an outdated 17 nm process, which means it's running a few degrees hotter than the competition (and you need more or bulkier chips for the same capacity) - make sure your system airflow is up to snuff. This is what I meant by playing catch up with moving targets.

Granted, you don't need the latest node for every computer, especially in the consumer space, but personally, I wouldn't risk running RAM from an unproven vendor (same with storage). I've had issues with faulty RAM in the past, which, among other things, resulted in data being invisibly corrupted over the course of months, so I tend to err on the side of caution. If their stuff turns out fine over the course of the next four or five years or so, I might probably change my tune - or be simply forced to buy from them, if for example the memory shortage continues.

[–] Smaile@lemmy.ca 1 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago) (1 children)

you are right in that im not using ddr5, 4 sticks of of lower grade ram is more then enough for me, besides, they only just started pushing these things recently, i detest the CCP but its clear they're going to be cutting into this market in a big way the coming decade. that and its far easier to get a hold of these outside of the usa.

[–] DdCno1@beehaw.org 1 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

detested the CCP

Detested or detest?

Good point on availability, by the way, especially globally. It reminds me of cheap Chinese cars booming in the developing world, for example. They are often extremely subpar, but some people like to take the risk of a new car that might be crappy over the perhaps even greater risk of an imported used car with an unknown history.

[–] Smaile@lemmy.ca 1 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago)

detest, i still don't like them. just because america has lost its subtly doesn't mean i'll suddenly glaze their regime (just to be clear im not saying your saying i am either, just clerifying) its true that china does drop shotty work but honestly iv not had much issue with these cards, maybe i got lucky with my batch or they only making large nm cards cuz their the only reliable ones they can actually make for now, idk.
