Funny how when the center of the economic bell curve collapses the extremes seem to rise.

"Somehow"

I don't know guys. Do you think we could get to the bottom of this?

[–] BradleyUffner@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Ehh, what else are they going to spend all that money on, improving society?

[–] FluidBeef@quokk.au 48 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It’s not “somehow” - the real economy is tanking precisely because the oligarchs have got so efficient at skimming the top off.

[–] bstix@feddit.dk 25 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Skimming the top, yeah, but the "top" is 99.99%.

[–] Abyssian@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

They'd probably quote that and portray it as you saying 99.99% of people are in the "top" now.

Unfortunately these weren't the types of yachts they were going after. They were, AFAIK, going for yachts under 50ft. I've known of people who have a 40ft boat as their home, so these are not the same type of people as the billionaires on super yachts

[–] treesquid@lemmy.world 26 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I wish the yachts themselves were exploding.

The suffering of millions is directly proportional to the wealth of the ultrawealthy. These things are not tangentially related. They are direct consequences of one another.

[–] Jimbel@lemmy.world 19 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Yep. People can only be wealthy if the wealth is not distributed evenly.

I am tired of pretending I don't want to behead all billionaires.

[–] Folstar@lemmus.org 6 points 1 day ago

It's so interesting that people can pretty easily be sold on the idea of starting a war that will kills tens of thousands of people based on geography that won't really change much, but if you propose killing far fewer people in a move that will improve the quality of life for the majority of people on the planet suddenly you're a monster.

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I'd prefer a worse fate for them.

Say, working a "9-5" grind until they die like the rest of us to contribute to the society they live in instead of leeching from it.

[–] _wizard@lemmy.world 25 points 2 days ago

Then stop. There's plenty of us that feel the same. Our community needs more people.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 10 points 2 days ago

[–] late_list@piefed.zip 138 points 3 days ago (4 children)

"Somehow" as if it's some great mystery and not because the 1% are siphoning off a bigger and bigger portion of the world's wealth. All to use for their own amusement while recklessly destroying the planet and sabotaging any attempts to do anything about it.

[–] PointlessLifePersonified@slrpnk.net 36 points 3 days ago (5 children)

Don't forget using them to hide somewhere out of reach when the peasants finally revolt.

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

If this happens, they better be damn sure the workers on the yacht have been paid and treated incredibly generously. It's not like these yachts are actually operated by the owners, and the crew are part of the working class.

[–] forgetfulmeat@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

That's why they want AI Robots

[–] anomnom@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago

They’ll run out of food and fresh water at some point. And have to come close enough for a drone firebombing or 2.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 9 points 2 days ago

That's the real agenda.

And also get involved in local activism. Do something in your community. Elections alone won't fix things. Vote for the least worst, but make that a small part of your political life.

[–] minorkeys@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

For millionaires.

[–] Darukhnarn@feddit.org 2 points 1 day ago

How about we kill some billionaires along with it?

[–] YeahIgotskills2@lemmy.world 50 points 3 days ago (1 children)

How odd. Its almost as if the insanely wealthy are getting richer at the expense of everyone else. Not to worry, they earned and deserve it through knuckling down. It'll trickle down anyway. It's not their fault. If anything it's the brown people risking their lives on unseaworthy craft that are to blame for everything being so expensive.

These things are terrible for the environment.

‘Megayachts’ are environmentally indefensible. The world must ban them: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/dec/11/megayachts-environment-carbon-emissions-ban

[–] gravitas_deficiency@sh.itjust.works 19 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

We don’t need to ban them. They just need to be made to sink through a series of unfortunate events that are nobody’s fault at all.

And if the owners are aboard and are unable to escape the sinking, I’m sure that would be a tragedy, and absolutely nobody would be dancing in the streets over such an event.

[–] stringere@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Is there a yacht tracking site like the ones people have used to track private planes?

[–] gravitas_deficiency@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

There are a number of sites that do this with naval transponders (an example of one). Generally, I believe it’s expected that civilian vessels have their transponders engaged (especially in national waters), though I’m not sure there are any strict requirements (or even realistic enforcement mechanisms) once one reaches international waters.

Tax their fucking wealth. We should be voting en masse for wealth taxes. They are just social parasites that extract wealth from the rest of the population while killing it. !twnw@fedia.io

At first I saw that among his fleet of 6 ships, that he has a research vessel and a hospital vessel. I thought, "Ok, funding research and a fucking full on floating hospital that he can send to disasters and places in need. That would actually be pretty fucking cool."

But, then I kept reading "a full-fledged hospital, serving as a safeguard for the cruising billionaire during the COVID-19 pandemic". 🤦

It's a "support" vessel that follows his main yacht around in case he needs medical care.

Enslave the wealthy, make them work for us.

[–] cannedtuna@lemmy.world 20 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Missed the word “sales” the first time and thought “hell yeah”, then re-read it and was just disappointed.
