How do we know it's the brain, and not the eye itself?

That being said, for those of us who can't or just don't picture things, would our pupils adjust the same way?
I heard from a uhh.. friend that if you have a certain kind of mushrooms then colors can get much more vivid. Same hardware but different mental state.
