My biggest complaint about Proton is I'm already paying for Unlimited, but they still insist on sending me ads about these promotions, and there doesn't appear to be a way to disable this behavior in the app.

[–] BCsven@lemmy.ca 6 points 9 months ago (2 children)

I got the ad too, then immediately an apology email since I already have unlimited

[–] LinkOpensChest_wav@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I didn't get the apology email

[–] protonmail@mastodon.social 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)

@LinkOpensChest_wav @BCsven Indeed there was an error, and some users to whose subscriptions this price change (https://proton.me/blog/proton-pass-price-change) doesn't apply have received an email about it. We then sent out a correction email. Please check your spam folder if you can't find it. If it's not there either, please let us know.

@protonmail@mastodon.social You're on Mastodon, and I'm on Lemmy, so I hope you see this.

Indeed there was an error, and some users to whose subscriptions this price change

This is my first time seeing notice of the price change. I don't think it affects me though, since my subscription is Proton Unlimited, not Proton Plus.

We then sent out a correction email. Please check your spam folder if you can’t find it. If it’s not there either, please let us know.

I just checked again. There is no such email in my inbox, spam, trash, or anywhere else. The last email I received from you was on October 25, 2023.

I also checked my email preferences, and I immediately got another popup promoting your password manager, and no option to dismiss it. Is this another error? Also, is it normal that I haven't received any emails from you since October 25, 2023? As you can see, I'm signed up for important announcements, user surveys, and Drive product updates.

The promotions I was seeing were not emails, but were integrated into the Proton VPN Android app. At least an email could be easily deleted. This was an ad for a promotional offer that I had to look at every time I used the Proton VPN app, which is something I frequently use.

@LinkOpensChest_wav Sorry for the confusion, the pricing post is for those currently on a Proton Pass Plus plan.

Is it normal that I haven't received an email since October 25, 2023?

Is it normal that I got a pop-up advertising your password manager with no way to x out of it, even though that's one service I don't use?

Is it normal that I had a persistent, indismissable promotional message in my Proton VPN app around the New Year?

[–] protonmail@mastodon.social 0 points 9 months ago (3 children)

@LinkOpensChest_wav If you've faced any issues with receiving emails that you were expecting to receive, please contact us at https://proton.me/support/contact so we can look further into that.

Regarding email subscriptions (i.e. promotional emails), you can turn them off in your All Settings → Dashboard tab.

How is this a response to what I wrote? How do I turn off the promotions that appear in the apps themselves? How do I turn off the popups?

[–] pineapplelover@lemm.ee -1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

You can opt out of it in your email settings.

[–] LinkOpensChest_wav@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 9 months ago (2 children)

I wasn't referring to emails. I was referring to self-promoting ads that are baked into the Android app itself for promotional pricing (saw this promotion every time I opened the Proton VPN app on Android, which I do a lot). I'm also referring to the indismissable popups. Even with Unlimited, I still got these ads.

[–] pineapplelover@lemm.ee 1 points 9 months ago (2 children)

Hmm. Guess I haven't noticed them as much. I also have unlimited.

[–] LinkOpensChest_wav@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Here's another separate but related problem. I didn't do a very good job of cropping, but this pop-up promotion appeared when I went to check my email subscriptions, with no way to x out. "Start using Proton Pass now" was the only selectable option. Sketchy asf.

[–] pineapplelover@lemm.ee 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I just checked protonmail on my phone and haven't received anything. I'm using the fdroid version, don't know if that makes any difference.

I'm using the F-Droid version too. However, the popup appeared on their web site using Firefox with uBlock Origin.

You didn't get the "x% off for limited time!" promos inside your Proton VPN app? I have Unlimited, and I still got that, even though I have an active subscription.

I'm starting to wonder if I have the official app because no one seems to know what I am talking about. I even contacted Proton directly, and the rep who responded kept telling me how to unsubscribe from emails even though I specifically said I'm not referring to emails. I'm starting to get tired of this company tbh. At least respect people enough to reply to the actual words they're saying.

@LinkOpensChest_wav Regarding the Proton Pass modal on the account settings page, if you click away from the pop-up anywhere on the screen, does it disappear, or can you dismiss the modal only by selecting 'Start using Proton Pass now'?

[–] LinkOpensChest_wav@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

At the time I received the popup, I refreshed the page, and it was gone. I'm not sure if clicking outside the popup would have worked. If there's no x to close, then that's what's called a "dark pattern."

[–] protonmail@mastodon.social 0 points 9 months ago (1 children)

@LinkOpensChest_wav That's a fair point. We've made sure to pass along your comments to the marketing team for future consideration.

We do try to strike a balance in our promotional materials between being informative about new offers/products/releases and giving an option to easily opt out for users who may not be interested, and honest feedback like yours helps in this regard.

Thank you for taking the time to understand what I'm saying. That's all I wanted. It's frustrating to keep being directed to change email preferences when that had nothing to do with my comments. I appreciate your time.

@LinkOpensChest_wav
I've read the same complains on Reddit.
I'm a free user only, so no such issue at this point :-)

Yeah, it was really bad around the start of the New Year. I'd go back to being a free user, except the whole reason I decided to subscribe was for some of the premium features.

Hopefully they'll listen to feedback and stop doing this!

@fanchig @protonprivacy The screenshot on the left is from 2023, and is about a discount that ended in August '23. As of recently (January '24), we announced another price reduction that will last until September '24: https://proton.me/blog/proton-pass-price-change. The former was $1/month on a yearly subscription, the latter is $1.99/month on a yearly subscription.

[–] akilou@sh.itjust.works 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)

This must be an old screenshot. I think it was back in September or something

[–] HeckGazer@programming.dev 3 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Very sneaky of them to put up a promotion in September that ended in August

[–] akilou@sh.itjust.works 4 points 9 months ago

Ha! I misremembered and didn't read the whole screenshot
