Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

lol tf is with the critic slander in the comments? No theyre not all bitter art scool dropouts 😂 know a bunch personally, most are acadamics and experts in some sort of cultural and or medial analysis whther that be focused on institutions, society or pure aesthetics.

most by far, in my country at least, are basically art professors with a side hustle...

this circlejerking seems so strange to me. Even fantano is for the most part v reasomable. Hes been saying "this is my personal opinion, and its okay to disagreee" for like plus 10 years, pretending hes some sort of gatekeeping elitist is really getting silly at this point

Honestly I'm just thrilled when someone respects an album as a cohesive experience rather than selecting a vibe and just listening to whatever a platform decides to stream to you.

[–] slacktoid@lemmy.ml 12 points 1 day ago

The album is the artist's playlist.

[–] Kellenved@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 day ago

Did Julian Casablancas make this meme?

[–] velma@sh.itjust.works 35 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Hah, ah Fantano. Y'know, he wasn't incorrect when he said he's one of the most influential music reviewers of our time. But there's no way to say that without sounding completely full of himself lol

As an avid pavement listener, I've had this guy pop up as recommended for YEARS, and I'm so happy I've never clicked.

[–] velma@sh.itjust.works 18 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I don't agree with all of his takes, but that's what makes some of his reviews so interesting. I also appreciate his willingness to change his opinion on a band or musician.

To me its more about the algorithm. I want to listen to my music, not listen to someone talk to me about my music, and the algorithm CAN NOT tell the two apart. My critique should really be with YT.

Oh damn, I thought it was Moby

[–] blartcap_@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I don't remember him declaring that out of nowhere so much as acknowledging it when articles or other people refer to him as that.

[–] velma@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Ah it was with the recent Halsey album review “controversy”. He did refer to himself as such, but it was justified.

“I don’t have to prove my track record to Halsey,” he maintains. “I have been the most relevant and impactful music critic of my — and any — generation for over 10 years now. You can’t really debate that. There’s no music critic bigger than me who’s had more impact than me for as long as I have, consistently. And if I die tomorrow, nobody’s going to outdo that run.”

Knowing absolutely nothing about him before today, he does sound like a massive dick, all things considered.

[–] velma@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 day ago

He is a dick sometimes, but again, he isn’t wrong here. As grating as it is haha

[–] Sibbo@sopuli.xyz 9 points 1 day ago

I don't like to view critics reviews about stuff I like. It just makes me sad if they say bad things about it and make it sound like they know what they are talking about.

oh I would love to see his opinion on Femtanyl xD

[–] JillyB@beehaw.org 3 points 1 day ago

Anthony Fantano, a popular music critic on YouTube.

[–] froufox@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Hes good starting point when you decide to follow new music releases. We just don't need to take his opinion as unarguable truth

[–] porous_grey_matter@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 day ago

We just don't need to take his opinion as unarguable truth

Taking any critic's opinion as the truth is crazy. Do we really just not know what a review is? Sure they say whether they liked something or not, but the point is that they describe it well enough that you can make a more educated guess about whether you'll like something or not regardless of what their score is. He does a decent job of that.

[–] Toneswirly@beehaw.org 9 points 1 day ago

People really be thinking Fantano is a villain but hes just a critic. If you dont respect him then find one you do...its not that deep

[–] clifmo@programming.dev 1 points 1 day ago

So, the myth here is that a critic doesn't enjoy the subject they critique. These memes are pure propaganda, not even a shit post. They have clear aims.

[–] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

The color of the flannel doesn’t lie

[–] Maerman@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Nothing against Fantano specifically, but art critic has to be one of the weirdest jobs. "I tell people my thoughts on stuff that other people have made."

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 19 hours ago

Wait untill you hear about a 'political pundit'.

I'm not insightful enough to be a movie critic. Maybe I could be a food critic. 'These muffins taste bad.' Or an art critic. 'That painting is bad’
