I opened the door to a shed and found this guy sitting in the middle of the floor. It's been a long time since I've seen one this big in the wild. My coworker said it was nice enough to be out in the open and not hiding somewhere I had to put my hands.

It's been my experience that where there's one scorpion, there's more

[–] Quetzalcutlass@lemmy.world 25 points 1 month ago (1 children)

They glow under blacklight so it's easy to check.

[–] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Is that all breeds or just some?

[–] Quetzalcutlass@lemmy.world 21 points 1 month ago (4 children)

A quick search says it's an almost universal trait among species.

[–] Malyca@lemmy.zip 23 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I used to shine them on the palm trees in my yard in Phoenix and the whole thing would glow with scorpions. It was so cool to see.

[–] Viceversa@lemmy.world 20 points 1 month ago

Cool is not the word I would use in that situation

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago

That's wild.

The almost makes it the fun part. Is there scorpions in there? *Shines light We should be good!

(Narrator: They were not good)

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 2 points 1 month ago

Not just species, the entire clave.

Oh ya there's more around for sure, this is in a pretty remote area. Rattlesnakes get in there occasionally and I'm really lucky I haven't encountered that. At least in that building.

[–] dreadbeef@lemmy.dbzer0.com 34 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Fun fact, scorpions are one of the earliest land creatures after animals moved from living in water.

[–] The_Lurker@lemmy.world 25 points 1 month ago (1 children)

And they could be 4ft long. Sea scorpions were much bigger. Sweet dreams!

I'm am a homebrew GM and worldbuilder so I will take all of the real world inspiration for deadly and dangerous fauna I can get :) My current favorite deadly fauna idea I've thought about recently is taking the utahraptor but as a huge modern avian raptor ie no longer a raptor dino but giant raptor bird. Basically a really scary chocobo at that point haha. But 4 feet scorpions are a fine addition to my collection >:)

What you're describing is the cassowary. It's a flightless bird that has a sword for a toe. And it instinctively knows where any animal's heart is, knowing precisely where to stab. And its head was clearly stolen from Jurassic Park.

Just look for images of cassowary feet and cassowary head.

Oh ya, it was a big one but it's still a lot smaller than me.

[–] luthis@lemmy.nz 15 points 1 month ago

Well, time to move to Antarctica. Nice knowing you all.

Long before I was born, before my mom met my dad, when my mom was in college, she dropped out and fled the US. She ended up in Europe and met a man named Colin, whom she then married and with whom she got pregnant, then moved to Greece.

While in Greece and pregnant, she did not have access to indoor plumbing. Instead, she used an outhouse. According to her, she once got up in the middle of the night to make use of the facilities, started to head outside without a light, then thought better of it and grabbed a light. When she did, she was glad she did so, because there was apparently a large, terrifying scorpion on the doorknob she would have used to exit the residence.

She did not disclose to me how she handled the situation.

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 17 points 1 month ago (1 children)

If it had been me I think the lack of plumbing would no longer be a barrier to shitting indoors

[–] toynbee@piefed.social 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Presumably this is especially true while pregnant.

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Having lived it twice, it's less about having your bowels crowded backward and more about having the whole uterine watermelon sitting on your bladder.

[–] toynbee@piefed.social 7 points 1 month ago

This is not dissimilar to what my wife said during the experience.

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

My step dad had the misfortune of having one hide in his pajama pants. Getting stung on the taint must have been awful

[–] toynbee@piefed.social 1 points 1 month ago

Better than the scrotum, I guess.

[–] tquid@sh.itjust.works 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

What a complete gentleman. Just chilling out in the open, no ulterior motives, sits still for his fitting appointment.

I choose to believe he donned a little top hat and walked out quietly

[–] glitch1985@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

You can kinda see the monacle in the third picture.

[–] hansolo@lemmy.today 13 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

F, she's a biggun.

Edit: thanks for the bio lesson

[–] j_elgato@leminal.space 8 points 1 month ago (2 children)

She's.

Arachnid females are larger than the males and should be the default gender.

Charlotte, and her web, at Tenagra.

The itsy bitsy spider, when she crawled up the water spout again.

New friend!

I would honestly struggle not to adopt this beast

[–] jobbies@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 month ago

Really needs a banana for scale.

[–] wake@quokk.au 6 points 1 month ago

Dang. They show up in our houses here in (the US Southwest) but not usually that size. Unfortunately I have to kill them everytime I spot them cause of our dogs.

[–] half_built_pyramids@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

Granger, for the ones who get stung

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 6 points 1 month ago

That's a bark scorpion. You are a braver, or dumber, man than I.

[–] don_kiedyck@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

Rock you like a hurricane!

scorpions are dangerous

[–] FenrirIII@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I found a 2 inch scorpion in my shorts last year. Glad he wasn't a whopper like that big boy

[–] thermal_shock@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

What about the width of a lane of the road?

[–] CADmonkey@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Critters in shops and warehouses are always fun. It never fails, some big snake/spider/scorpion/etc moseys in, and there's one guy hiding in the break room until its gone and another guy taking pictures of it because it's cute.
