If not decentralized, it's a no go...

[–] qaz@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

The site looks vibe coded. It's possible they just bought the trademark, quickly set up a site and hope to capitalize on the reputation of former Twitter.
The $20 and $40 early access certainly makes it seem like it. Even if that isn't the case, time has shown that centralized social media has flaws so idealists will just stay with Mastodon while the people that want a large user base and easy of use will just use BlueSky instead. IMO there is no market aside from a possible gofundme-invention type exit scam.

[–] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 56 points 3 days ago (5 children)

Yeah i'il keep using mastodon and bluesky, also, they already have investors so it's dead at birth for me

[–] 7101334@lemmy.world 65 points 2 days ago (19 children)

Bluesky is also owned by a corporation and, like Twitter, could sell to a fascist billionaire whenever they find it profitable to do so.

X vs Bluesky is a great microcosm of American team-sports politics. Mastodon is something actually new.

Lol. It'd be hilarious if this succeeded. It was so dumb of Musk to change the name.

[–] muusemuuse@sh.itjust.works 207 points 3 days ago (6 children)

Most of what musk does is dumb.

He didn't get rich from being smart.

I assume he got rich how most people get rich, luck and being a sociopath.

If nothing else we know this project will piss off Elon and that's always a plus.

[–] crakila@lemmy.world 116 points 3 days ago (6 children)
  • Cash grab on an old name and hoping people pony up the $20 to join it.
  • Not using ActivityPub or ATProto.

Yeah, it's already DOA.

If anyone is serious about creating a new centralised social network these days, they have already lost.

[–] mcv@lemmy.zip 23 points 3 days ago (6 children)

Shame. A new Twitter that supports all the open protocols would have been cool. Fediverse with a name people recognise.

So, I'm just checking..

  1. It is not open source?
  2. It uses AI to "Fact-Check"?
  3. It costs 20$ to join, and possibly more later?

Well, they have chosen interesting path those people behind this thing.

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 32 points 3 days ago (1 children)

This will never amount to more than a cash grab.

Yeah. "Lets try centralized algorithmic corporate social media again."

Im sure this attempt will end up just as wholesome.

[–] Scrollone@feddit.it 21 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Also, with a website that's clearly designed by AI.

What could go wrong

I hope this takes off and people start using "tweet" and "twitter" again and it makes "x" completely irrelevant like his Hitler salute should have

Edit: it cost $20 to join?! I'm out

Well, they need something to pay the lawyers with once Musk takes notice.

Edit: I've just discovered this interesting concept called "reading the article" and found out that they've already been sued, though it's still not entirely settled.

Spread the word my brother! You've got to let everyone know about this new fad!

They probably need the money to pay for their AI-based "fact-checking":

A new and notable feature is the automated fact-checking tool, a Gemini-based “veracity engine for real-time analysis” (“Vera” for short), which runs on every tweet.

Using a technology that's known for making shit up, for fact-checking, is so dumb, but it will probably bring in investors because AI.

And I'm going to keep dead naming X as Twitter until Musk stops dead naming his daughter. I never used the site in the first place, but that's besides the point.

[–] PhoenixDog@lemmy.world 16 points 2 days ago (1 children)

And I’m going to keep dead naming X as Twitter until Musk stops dead naming his daughter.

I'll dead name Twitter long after Musk stops dead naming his daughter, or he himself is dead. X is a stupid fucking name.

Twitter was awful before Musk bought it. Hard pass.

[–] kamen@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

Paid early access? I think I'll pass...

Ah yes, just what the world needs: another Twitter.

[–] Pamasich@kbin.earth 33 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Imo reviving Twitter as paid ai slop is just making a mockery of it.

hahaha, this is the first thing I though after the idiot changed the iconic name to nothing, go twitter! (no, I'm not joining bluebird, but I like the trust threshold idea)

[–] banause@feddit.org 41 points 3 days ago (25 children)

A Masto instance would have been cool. But that is just garbage.

Yay, another centralized service owned by investors. And they want to build on “trust” lmao. Fuck off.

It seems like maybe the commenters here thus far are missing the (obvious from the title) fact that this is not affiliated with Musk or “X” at all? I admire the aggressiveness of this move and I’ll be rooting for them.

[–] arotrios@lemmy.world 76 points 3 days ago

The real power move here would be to grab the domain name and run a free Mastodon instance off of it.

[–] luciferofastora@feddit.org 37 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (7 children)

Bwahahahaa

Really? The Gemini that got Google sued and found liable for the misinformation it spread? That's who you wanna trust to check for "veracity"?

I'm not paying a $20 entry fee into a walled garden that wastes energy and water to have a text processor guess whether my arrangement of words resembles its training material closely enough.

I didn't like Twitter enough to join it when it didn't cost $20.

[–] Toasticus@piefed.social 32 points 3 days ago

These guys are a bunch of morons. All of the comments here are proving as to why.

  • Associates with AI
  • Wants money to use it
  • Doesn't factor that Twitter might not entirely be available after all
  • Uses Musk's other imprints, like Grok, on it which may subject them to fail
  • More centralized social media is not what we need

I'll give it a few months before they actually are sued into oblivion, to which they'll have the biggest pikachu shocked faces possible.

[–] Mwa@thelemmy.club 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Finally Twitter's name and logo isn't a ripoff of the X Windowing System(maybe)
