/c/TenForward: Your home-away-from-home for all things Star Trek!

Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. Use spoiler tags in comments, and NSFW checkbox for posts.
This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'

~ 8. No Political Upheaval. Political commentary is allowed, but please keep discussions civil. Read here for our community's expectations.

Fun will now commence.

Yesteryear alone makes watching TAS worth it.

Also this line that should have been in Community:

What's your ploy, Dr. McCoy?

Naughty naughty, Mr. Scotty!

It fits like a glove, Pavel Chekov.

Anything you're unsure of, Lieutenant Uhura?

[–] ummthatguy@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Get those bandages unraveled, if you would, Nurse Chapel.

Why so smiley, Kevin Riley?

TAS gets a fairly well earned bad rap for the shit recycled animation, but the stories are good. Also, Doohan filling in a lot of the additional voices is awesome.

[–] atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works 7 points 7 hours ago

That wasn’t really unique to TAS though. A lot of other Filmation and other companies’ productions had similar cut corners during that time especially. Some of the later 70s Scooby Doo cartoons have backgrounds change mid shot and shit like that even.

My only complaint was that the klingons were apparently Scottish.

Lots of places have a North.

the shit recycled animation

The most egregious example I can think of are these three distinct creatures from three distinct planets that are just recycled sprites/animations:

And the way some characters would put their hands on their mouths, so the studio wouldn't have to animate their lip movements.

[–] SatyrSack@quokk.au 11 points 10 hours ago

I also seem to remember a lot of zoomed in faces. I'm wondering now if that was another trick to avoid animating lips

[–] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 5 points 9 hours ago

Didn't even change the color 😩

[–] ummthatguy@lemmy.world 11 points 11 hours ago

And this one frame appearing in most episodes:

[–] fireweed@lemmy.world 12 points 11 hours ago (3 children)

Basically every time I look up a reference I didn't get in Lower Decks, it came from TAS. Starting to feel like I'm missing out.

[–] usernamefactory@lemmy.ca 10 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

They’re like episodes of TOS, but speed ran and on (even more) crack. They’re delightful, despite the limited animation.

[–] SatyrSack@quokk.au 7 points 9 hours ago

TAS seems to be all ideas that they had during TOS that they were not able to accomplish with their limited budget in live action but they could get away with in animation. Things like weird non-humanoid alien main characters, characters breathing underwater, characters becoming giants, etc.

I recommend at least watching Yesteryear, the episode about Spock's childhood. That's a good one, written by one of Star Trek's most significant writers, D. C. Fontana.

If you want to learn what the deal is with Spock 2 you'll have to watch a very, very strange episode.

Don't expect anything revolutionary, but I really enjoyed it.

[–] rockSlayer@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

I can't wait to watch Star Trek: Babylon 5

[–] AbsolutelyNotSpez@lemmy.world 6 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Best I can provide right now is:

[–] OpenStars@discuss.online 3 points 8 hours ago

That's not Star Trek Babylon V!

That's from Farscape Balls: The Seoich Fore Moar Money.

And the guy on the screen is from Battlestar Galaxy Quest.
