There's a special edition of the Switch 2 in relation to commemorating the 40th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda, which is expected to release around October 29 2026. Keep in mind this is discussing the Region Locked version of the console rather than the Global Switch 2 everyone else owns. I mean, you can import it upon release but comes with caveats (must have a JP Nintendo Account and speak / understand Japanese).

Prices will differ based on region upon release for the same thing, which is like why:

  • US: $519.99 (excl. Sales Tax)
  • EU: 519,99€ (inc. VAT)
  • UK: £419.99 (inc. VAT)
  • AU: A$799.95 (inc. GST)

Will you buy the console when it releases?

Don't give Nintendo your money. As a company they have nothing but contempt for gamer freedoms. Yes I understand they playtest the fuck out of their titles so they're genuinely bug-free and frictionless, but as a former fanboy that doesn't give them the right to rip off customers and overcharge for everything and make more stupid walled gardens to hold you captive.

This applies to all big publishers.

[–] Deconceptualist@leminal.space 1 points 4 days ago

No, the others don't playtest their games nearly as thoroughly :p

Seriously though Nintendo is a bit special for being particularly nasty and litigious, and doing shit like claiming emulation is piracy while literally selling emulation of their old devices.

They always were expensive and picky about their eco system, this is not a new development. And in the foreseeable future they will be the only one selling physical media which is oh so very important to these gamers.

Man, fuck Nintendo. After the switch stick drift debacle, they had an opportunity to fix the problem with the switch 2 but nope! Same bullshit still going on!

[–] LettyWhiterock@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

That's just all console manufacturers.

Gamer freedoms

Once again history proves gamers are the most oppressed class.

[–] Deconceptualist@leminal.space 1 points 4 days ago

Oh you're right, we shouldn't talk about things like right to repair, ownership of your purchases, and game preservation because someone else in history has gotten screwed over even harder. 😛

Why are your prices in the title and post completely different?

[–] kuiskaaja@lemmy.ml 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

i think the price in the title is the price for the japanese version

nintendo tends to sell a region locked variant of their consoles in japan for a discounted price

[–] SomethingBurger@jlai.lu 1 points 4 days ago

tends to sell

This literally only happened once.

Me with a pc

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but are you saying that the JPN Zelda Switch 2 is region locked? Or are all the Zelda Switch 2's region locked to their specific region? I was thinking of buying the special edition, but I usually buy game cards from EU, NA and Asian markets so I probably wouldn't be able to port my SW1 library.

[–] NightOps@nord.pub 7 points 5 days ago (1 children)

The difference is from the JP version, you can't change the region to outside JPN, console language to ENG nor can you log in using a foreign Nintendo account, that's the part making it region locked.

[–] sigmaklimgrindset@sopuli.xyz 1 points 5 days ago

Thank you for the answer! Appreciate it 🙏

As cool as it looks... No. Now that many of their game cartridges are basically empty download keys I see no reason to buy something I can't truly own anymore. The Switch and PS4 were the last mainstream consoles I'll ever buy. RIP physical media.

Smyths are doing in-store pre-orders in the UK for them!

[–] DGen@piefed.zip 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I'd consider it if a friend would take my current S2. If Not, I'm Not mad. But I do think about the controller a Lot.

[–] astanix@lemmy.world -4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Why? Is the controller functionally different? If it's just cosmetic, do you look at your controller while you play?

[–] deliriousdreams@fedia.io 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)

It's okay that people enjoy aesthetic upgrades or styling even if you don't. Let people enjoy things.

[–] astanix@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

It was a genuine question. I dont know if they made the controller suck less or if its still going to drift after 6 months.

[–] deliriousdreams@fedia.io 3 points 4 days ago

Fair, but I think your phrasing may have come off a bit strong/judgemental.

It doesn't seem like (given the number of sales) people were stopped from buying joycons or pro controllers by the stick drift/quality issues.

It's tempting. I really would love a zelda swtich 2, but not sure if I'll have that much money to put to it then.

[–] NightOps@nord.pub 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Do you own a Switch 2? If so, how much is it in your region?

[–] eyecreate@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Don't own one yet. I'm in USA, so $520 is what it'd cost me.

[–] Zarobi@aussie.zone 1 points 5 days ago

A$800 is a big ask. Increasingly, I feel like maximising value of what I already own, rather than buying new stuff
