Disappointing

Amazing, so that means people would buy the Index less, the first gen Vive will go down and I can finally afford Google Cardboard.

EDIT: 1 downvote is Gabe.

$60 for the ergonomic kit, which is a couple of pieces of fabric, is rough. Doesn't bode well for the price of the HMD.

I suspect Linux/Machine streaming will be there at launch and might be a reason they've been so late with the launch. We've seen quite a few Linux fixes in recent SteamVR releases.

They might sell it near cost, since the only practical way to use it is through Steam. I understand why they didn’t do that with the Steam Machine, because that’s very easy to use without Steam.

They might sell it near cost

Zero chance.

[–] hperrin@lemmy.ca 1 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

I mean, near cost still wouldn’t be a good price, but there’s not a lot of advantage to sell it at a high price for them. Much less reason for anyone to buy into their VR ecosystem rather than Meta’s.

Your lips to Gabe's billionaire ears.

The only practical way right now is through steam. Open source community will change that in a hurry

[–] hperrin@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They did with the Steam Deck too. I don’t think Valve is worried about super-technical people. It’s if it’s easy enough for the everyday user to use it without Steam. The Machine is super easy to use without Steam, and it’s useful as a computer. A cluster of Frames wouldn’t be very useful.

At least that’s my take on it.

[–] apotheotic@beehaw.org 1 points 1 day ago

Reasonable yea

[–] cronenthal@discuss.tchncs.de 8 points 1 day ago

I'd hope so. Excluding Steam Machine from streaming would be a hilariously bad look.

Nice try Linus, but I wouldn't watch your review even if it was the last one on earth.

[–] skozzii@lemmy.ca 13 points 1 day ago

Your loss, he might drop some tips on cool accessories for your private jet.

[–] Railcar8095@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Would you be interested if I tell you it's a great showcase of nepotism?

[–] needanke@feddit.org 29 points 1 day ago

Good news, its the first one!

About the level of professionalism I’d expect from LTT.

[–] Duke_Nukem_1990@feddit.org 52 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Streaming only from Windows for now?? Well that's fucking disappointing.

[–] cronenthal@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

By the time you actually hold one in your hands it'll likely be fixed.

[–] Duke_Nukem_1990@feddit.org 4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Not something I'm gonna bet 1200€+ on.

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Well that's why you don't buy it until it's been fixed.

Personally not sure if I'll ever buy it, but if I do it'll be only after Linux is supported.

[–] mtlvmpr@sopuli.xyz 1 points 17 hours ago

Same. There's only 1 Windows install in my household and I'm pretty sure XP is not supported.

[–] GarboDog@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Yeah that pricing is yeouch

[–] doublah@sopuli.xyz 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

People have already been streaming VR from Steam Machine to Quest devices, so something doesn't add up.

[–] hperrin@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

Maybe they’re talking about foviated streaming in particular?

[–] Grimy@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

I figure they are working on it though. I can't imagine it will take long for them to solve it.

TL;DW for anyone just looking for any new information:

  • Ergo kit is $60 (I assume USD)
    • two hand straps to make the controllers more like Knuckles controllers
    • head strap
    • nose light guard for smaller noses
  • Game streaming from Linux does not work at the moment
    • Valve is reportedly working on it, and it may or may not be ready on release
    • This video seems to have been recorded 24 August according to the date on his watch
  • Power supply sold separately
    • 45 watt
    • No price given
  • The initial experience is basically just a wireless Index (for better or worse)

I guess cutting corners is happening more often with them these days after Linus bought the private jet.

[–] tidderuuf@lemmy.world 26 points 2 days ago

"accidentally"

[–] artyom@piefed.social 12 points 1 day ago

Almost a year after initial unveiling and they still haven't figured out streaming from their own hardware!?

[–] Creat@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Do we know what the real embargo date was supposed to be? Like was the upload off by hours, days, weeks?

[–] SatyrSack@quokk.au 5 points 1 day ago

No, we regular old users have no idea. But the best bet at this point is this coming Monday.

[–] hereiamagain@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Anyone got another mirror? First one down

So its set to release soon then.
