This community is focused on games, of all kinds. Any news item or discussion should be related to gaming in some way.

2. No bigotry or harassment, be civil

No bigotry, hardline stance. Try not to get too heated when entering into a discussion or debate.

We are here to talk and discuss about one of our passions, not fight or be exposed to hate. Posts or responses that are hateful will be deleted to keep the atmosphere good. Does anyone have that sweet gif of Ms. Rachel and Mamdani?

[–] Shortstack@reddthat.com 115 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Honestly just save it to your phone, it’s needed on lemmy so much

[–] rockSlayer@lemmy.blahaj.zone 28 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Here's a trick, save a comment of the gif, then you can copy the markup of the gif that's already been uploaded

[–] tanisnikana@lemmy.world 9 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Set a keyboard shortcut to &rachelmamdani to replace that with the markup, and it’s at your fingertips!

Could even shorten it to &rm!

Oh, good. Hadn't seen a Discord data breach article in a short while so was wondering if I'd slipped into a coma. All is normal.

[–] thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 11 points 3 weeks ago

I was worried that Discord became secure. I had nothing to worry about it seems.

[–] artyom@piefed.social 64 points 3 weeks ago

Basically, it’s the worst Discord hack via a third-party service provider since the last Discord hack via a third-party service provider, which occurred almost a year to the day ago – spooky!

LOL wow that thing that everyone said would happen, happened. Again.

Plot twist, it’s a “rogue AI” doing data collection.

[–] burido@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

this time it's copilot

If only matrix was as usable as discord I'm sure a lot of people would

[–] dragonlover@lemmy.zip 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

It is. People just need to use an app that actually cares about good UI like Cinny/Sable. Element is trash.

Sable has every feature I could want and then some

[–] Tattorack@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

Seconded on Sable.

[–] partzel@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

It is more than usuable though, my only issue with it is the lack of communities other than that both apps and servers are pretty reliable imo

[–] senko@ani.social 3 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

Stoat chat seems pretty decent open source alternative to Discord, tried it for a while and has similar usability, but same issue, "nobody uses it", also development has been very slow.

[–] NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

I tried stoat, but I couldn't create the same community that I had on Discord that I had set up, so I haven't tried to move everything there. Honestly, if there was a Discord alternative that functioned similar, I would move there tomorrow, but there really isn't. And there's no easy way to mirror the content from Discord to the other place so people can see the activity.

[–] Marn@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah stoat looks very promising!

[–] Starski@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 weeks ago

I've been liking stoat, I only really used discord to communicate with my friends and luckily they were nice enough to humour me with making an account, so now stoats pretty much all I use, even if my friends are still using discord on the side

[–] dmir@gehirneimer.de 2 points 3 weeks ago

It sometimes takes an eternity or two to decrypt my messages, making me really want to agree here.

[–] Tattorack@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Firstly, it already is. It depends on what client you use.

Secondly, no they wouldn't. Even when all the work is done for them, nobody moves because nobody cares even when they say they do.

[–] Flatfire@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago

Unless it's changed substantially in the last few months, it really isn't. I tried half a dozen different clients, from the bog standard to the bleeding edge and all of them seemed to implement features unevenly or not at all.

There's points of friction that just make it worse to use, which isn't something I can sell most of my friends on. Fluxer seems like a far better option for a 1:1 experience.

[–] AbsolutelyNotSpez@lemmy.world 9 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] Solrac@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

I'll consider it once its been federated. Otherwise its just jumping from one basket to another basket

[–] psycotica0@lemmy.ca 13 points 3 weeks ago

Thank god everyone was kept safe by this...

[–] XiJinpingStanAccount@lemmy.ml 9 points 3 weeks ago

Discord is less a messaging platform these days as just like an open source data aggregation service for cyber criminals. It's like they have a huge data leak every 6 months or so.

[–] dropdrip@lemmy.ml 9 points 3 weeks ago
[–] LemmyEntertainYou@piefed.social 6 points 3 weeks ago

And yet Discord still blocks using anonaddy addresses to sign up.

[–] myyass@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago

Now lets start adding in present day photos (for the children only, gotta keep them safe! oh and they must be in swimwear for extra security).

[–] ThunderComplex@lemmy.today 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Deleted my Discord a long time ago since I rarely used it, the only thing that sucks is when trying to do game jams with others it’s the only option, so I haven’t been able to do any…
But still this is better than having Discord.

[–] ennof@feddit.org 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] ThunderComplex@lemmy.today 1 points 3 weeks ago

idk, I only see discord links when checking game jam community pages, and since I don't have a need for a chat app I've never investigated any alternatives

[–] Stolas@lemmy.ca 6 points 3 weeks ago

I always hated how invasive double counter was. Besides being a bouncer it's also been used a stalking tool to find out peoples alt accounts and harass them.

[–] Einhornyordle@feddit.org 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Double Counter essentially acts as a bouncer bot for Discord servers

If you give a Discord Bot sensitive data, I'm sorry but you're clearly the issue. Bots are software, you (hopefully) wouldn't download a random piece of software from an untrusted souce and give it access to your sensitive data and you should apply the same level of caution when it comes to Discord Bots too.

[–] cmhe@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

You are victim blaming. Should they have been more cautions with handing over their data, yes. But the fact that they have to, is representative of the bad state of society. It is the fault of the company, people or systems that where trusted by the communities to properly protect it against evil actors. If they cannot protect that data, they shouldn't have gathered it in the first place. And for that they should get punished properly and should recompense all victims. They should no longer be in business.

Civilization is built on trust, and if that trust erodes, civilization does too.

[–] Quexotic@infosec.pub 1 points 3 weeks ago

Correct, and the biggest erosion of trust is coming. It'll definitely be something.

[–] Hiro8811@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

Pfahahaha deserved

Nah, go to Fluxer, it's better and it's getting Federation support

[–] Starski@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Aint no way I'm convincing my friends to switch again, looks cool though

[–] Tattorack@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Matrix with Sable client.

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

discord is a shit tier platform filled with pedophiles.

[–] Ashrakal@lemmy.ml 3 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Discord is out there tripping itself over, quietly poking TeamSpeak “hey, maybe you could make a comeback to break our VoIP monopoly?”, meanwhile TS sits it out quietly developing at a snail’s pace.

Then we’ve got Stoat, Fluxer, and what’s not currently the trending obscure alternative (think like Guilded was too). They’re all too obscure, and most of time these apps are unsigned & lack notarisation so their code safety is a matter of “trust me” (a wise person doesn’t install random junk on their PC, regardless of it being FOSS or not - one rogue maintainer is enough to bring risk; unless they’ve gone even half as serious as Debian or other highly reputable FOSS). Adding to their obscurity, I doubt anybody is going to materialise new friends into existence by sheer willpower, will they?

Unless something happens that makes the casual Discorders jump off their platform, these hiccups are largely irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. Yes, they’re serious. No, they still won’t make people ditch Discord - at worst they’ll keep obscure platform XYZ for contacting friend group 1, and still use Discord for their daily communities and acquaintances who don’t keep up with any tech news (like privacy leaks) at all.

That’s just some food for thought, I’m not actually going to debate about what I wrote (no time for such things!) Nevertheless, I sincerely hope Discord flops over, and a bunch of better alternatives appears.
