I filed for an extension and yes it really took me this long to do mostly because of bad luck and my own really bad, impulsive choices.

You're not wrong.

I did not do my taxes for about three and a half years.

I was an adult.

I was incredibly poor, each of those years I only made like six or seven thousand dollars.

I ended up getting a refund and apparently the IRS did not care at all.

I imagine that if I had owed them money, it would have been a different story.

You are not required to file your taxes when you make under a certain amount. There were a couple of years where I didn't.

Honestly how are taxes done in America? In aus I did it on my phone at work in about 10/15 mins the day it opened. Got my 2 grand back a fortnight later.

Most people can do their taxes in 30 minutes. Enter your wages (W-2), if you have dependents(kids), if you have a mortgage and any other deductions(retirement, health care costs) as a non-billionaire.

It's really only complex if you own your own/are selling your business, are a landlord, are a day trader on the stock market, or have a death/divorce.

Ah so pretty much the same as aus, except ours are mostly prefilled as our pay etc is generally sent to the ato automatically by w/e org you are employed by. Stocks etc take a little more time but who has the money for that nowadays.

its a bitch in the us unless you pay for software to do it but its still a pain. anything free won't auto get various forms by download and purposefully makes it a pain. Before trump biden had started a thing to get the irs do it so you don't have to pay but, well, you know. both parties are completely the same and there is no reason to prevent the republicans from winning every time because like genocidin biden and they just don't do enough n junk.
