"Won't somebody think of the kids?!" while they admit to using the data to squeeze more money from ads (translated making your experience better). They don't deserve the communities they have anymore.

Soon any company you interact with will have enough information to ruin your life because there's always a way for some employee to get the data even of you really do what you promise and don't save anything.

As GLaDOS said - it's been fun, don't come back.

Quit reddit, you, filthy animal!

[–] jiriks74@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Sadly there's nothing many people in the communities here. I would live fo vet rid of it completely but it doesn't seem that I'd be able to get as much help here, e.g. about my motorbike, as on reddit - it has a dedicated community there with quite a lot of people wich sadly isn't happening any time soon here.

I love "all photos are encrypted so your information remains private". Encrypted to whom? Private from whom? I don't want you to have it! I'm more worried about you then the guy at the coffee shop. He can already see my face!

You're going to have a hard time judging my age by a photo you can't decrypt, so don't pull that shit with me.

[–] filcuk@feddit.uk 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

They remain encrypted, but also stolen, decrypted and sold. It's like schrodinger's cat, but there's no one to observe the state.

[–] jiriks74@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

There also not safe, but we're very sorry for the leak which got the IDs of 10 000 of our customers.

Didn't Pesona even get caught in a lie just like this in the past?

[–] TrackenDaKracken@lemmy.world 94 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Don't worry, your data will remain private. We'll have it, and we'll sell it, of course, but that's our right. Also, we might be hacked when some bad guy guesses our Pa$$worD, or we make an oopsie and leave the entire server open and unencrypted. But, other than that, your driver's license is safe with us.

[–] Sludgehammer@lemmy.world 16 points 2 days ago

You forgot "It'll be private because we'll 'anonymize' it before we sell it"

[–] SolarMyth@aussie.zone 7 points 2 days ago

Of course we'll also have to comply when the government wants lists of people with attitudes of anti-Americanism, anti-capitalism, and anti-Christianity.

[–] sparky@lemmy.federate.cc 35 points 2 days ago (1 children)

They forgot option 3: uninstall the app

[–] nickiwest@lemmy.world 22 points 2 days ago (2 children)

They're counting on the vast majority of their user base being driven by FOMO.

I fear that those of us who are willing to cut ties and go elsewhere are a very small minority.

[–] voidsignal@lemmy.world 19 points 2 days ago (4 children)

Fuck FOMO. I'm LOMO. The Love Of Missing Out.

An overwhelming amount of Reddit is now just bots, insane out of control mods, and morons. Using AI to immediately ban if you try and post certain words is bullshit.

Reddit can eat shit, it’s Orange Turd loving CEO can fuck right off.

Identity theft 'bouta pop off crazy style in the future.

[–] Bahnd@lemmy.world 22 points 2 days ago

Yah... My old (abandoned) reddit account is quite old, if you cant prove im not a child by the account being two decades old, thats a you problem. Find me in 2029 and we can talk, but until then, were going no contact.

I tricked the aliexpress age verification with an image from google. I wonder if this will work here too.

[–] Wildmimic@anarchist.nexus 10 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

I refuse to give this information outside of serious financial or governmental proceedings, where you might expect that you will have to deposit a proof of identity.

I'll rather drop every single platform requiring this then to engage with this circus. "What about the kids" my ass.

[–] jiriks74@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Yeah, one thing is a bank or a government and another is this... Everyone and their mother will have my id and I have to believe it will be safe?

What about the kids? How is their data protected with these systems where security it quite often an afterthought?

Also - they apparently think I'm a kid, why are they still serving me targetted ads? "What about the kids"?

[–] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 2 days ago

At what point do we normalize a civic duty to avoid parasitic data miners

[–] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 2 days ago

"All photos are encrypted.."

Why the Hell do you need to fucking store them? If I rejuvenate to a 12 year old?!

[–] philipsdirk@discuss.tchncs.de 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Just recently I had to travel to Germany by train on short notice. The German online ticket portal also wanted my ID and selfie when paying because it was an iNtErNaTiOnAl journey. I just booked it through my local country's international ticketing portal and they didn't even mention it.

[–] jiriks74@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

it's InTeRnAtIoNaL - yes, and I'm in the EU, noone cares...

I wonder if there would be a market for life-like heads on… like… a ventriloquist dummy type of thing…. And I very much mean for security bypassing get your filthy mind out of there.

[–] tidderuuf@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I've seen some of the tools in the UK are fooled by AI generated pictures. Kind of funny to see if they end up in a database and shit starts getting regurgitated like the human centipede.

BTW, OP, unlike reddit, on lemmy you can edit your post titles :P

[–] jiriks74@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I hought its possible on reddit too? Good catch, a wrote this angry and tired and I use an app that I'm not familiar with. Great time!

[–] daychilde@lemmy.world 1 points 17 hours ago

Reddit's philosophy is more that trolls could edit to put nasty things in the title. Lemmy seems to have a bit more freedom for posting :)

[–] razen@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

There will still be dumbfucks who will do it happily

[–] jiriks74@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

I wouldn't really put it like that. There a reason many people who just don't understand it.

I bought a lock for my house. A professional locksmith can easily call me a dumb fuck for choosing that one but with the knowledge I had I chose the best option I could think of.

Besides the recommendation to drop sites that demand privacy-breaching validations, seeking the legal venues is important too, else people will just lose ground as they try to avoid the issue.

Persona and other third‑party age verification providers have been cited in broader debates about the privacy and security implications of online age checks. News coverage of Reddit’s UK rollout focused on short photo retention windows and the separation of user account data from verification data, while also highlighting civil liberties concerns about expanding age restrictions online. Founders Fund's investment in Persona has been scrutinized in broader discussions of government surveillance and identity verification technologies due to its ties to Peter Thiel, the founder of data-analytics company Palantir. Song has denied operational relationships between Persona and Palantir or U.S. government agencies.

In February 2026, a security researcher discovered publicly-exposed code on an instance of Persona's verification system used by the U.S. government's Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP), which revealed information about the company's verification pipeline. The discovery led to further evaluations of Persona's operations; the messaging service Discord stated that it would end its trial use of Persona for age verification in certain territories, and evaluate alternative providers and methods.

[–] RedGreenBlue@lemmy.zip 8 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Surely some mathematician knows some magic cryptography to do age checks with zero trust and no data shared?

[–] jiriks74@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

EU has some controversy RN over trying to do this.

They want to make an app that does this basically.

It loads/verifies your ID/passport and creates a signature /key valid for some time. Then if some app wants to verify your age it derives a key/signature/whatever with your age bracket attached and the app is happy knowing that you're e.g. 15-18, that the app used a valid signature and apparently nothing else.

There's supposed to be a FOSS implementation of it somewhere too.

I do feline it one bit and I don't remember the exact mechanism it's supposed to be, but at the very least this appears to try to be actually for the kids. However someone might still be able to bakr in calling home (the app is the trusted party here) so a government might be able to log that person xyz logged into pornhub or something.

[–] Natanael@infosec.pub 3 points 1 day ago

Zero-knowledge proofs and anonymous attestation - the problem is you still have to prove your identity and age to some trusted entity using a certificate, similar to a physical ID. But if you can get that, you can then anonymously prove your age. Assuming the verifying site trusts your issuer. Also assuming they trust you didn't borrow somebody else's device. Also assuming they don't ask for more and more proofs until they can identify you anyway.

[–] Eternal192@anarchist.nexus 6 points 2 days ago

I was like "which shitass site is that supposed to be" and started reading below Reddit and started laughing, i'm already gone ha ha bye Felicia!
