Comic Strips is a community for those who love comic stories.

Rules
  1. πŸ˜‡ Be Nice!

    • Treat others with respect and dignity. Friendly banter is okay, as long as it is mutual; keyword: friendly.
  2. 🏘️ Community Standards

    • Comics should be a full story, from start to finish, in one post.
    • Posts should be safe and enjoyable by the majority of community members, both here on lemmy.world and other instances.
    • Any comic that would qualify as raunchy, lewd, or otherwise draw unwanted attention by nosy coworkers, spouses, or family members should be tagged as NSFW.
    • Moderators have final say on what and what does not qualify as appropriate. Use common sense, and if need be, err on the side of caution.
  3. 🧬 Keep it Real

    • Comics should be made and posted by real human beans, not by automated means like bots or AI. This is not the community for that sort of thing.
  4. πŸ“½οΈ Credit Where Credit is Due

    • Comics should include the original attribution to the artist(s) involved, and be unmodified. Bonus points if you include a link back to their website. When in doubt, use a reverse image search to try to find the original version. Repeat offenders will have their posts removed, be temporarily banned from posting, or if all else fails, be permanently banned from posting.
    • Attributions include, but are not limited to, watermarks, links, or other text or imagery that artists add to their comics to use for identification purposes. If you find a comic without any such markings, it would be a good idea to see if you can find an original version. If one cannot be found, say so and ask the community for help!
  5. πŸ“‹ Post Formatting

    • Post an image, gallery, or link to a specific comic hosted on another site; e.g., the author's website.
    • Meta posts about the community should be tagged with [Meta] either at the beginning or the end of the post title.
    • When linking to a comic hosted on another site, ensure the link is to the comic itself and not just to the website; e.g.,
      βœ… Correct: https://xkcd.com/386/
      ❌ Incorrect: https://xkcd.com/
  6. πŸ“¬ Post Frequency/SPAM

    • Each user (regardless of instance) may post up to five (5 πŸ–) comics a day. This can be any combination of personal comics you have written yourself, or other author's comics. Any comics exceeding five (5 πŸ–) will be removed.
  7. πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈ Internationalization (i18n)

    • Non-English posts are welcome. Please tag the post title with the original language, and include an English translation in the body of the post; e.g.,
      SΓ, por favor [Spanish/EspaΓ±ol]
  8. 🍿 Moderation

    • We are human, just like most everybody else on Lemmy. If you feel a moderation decision was made in error, you are welcome to reach out to anybody on the moderation team for clarification. Keep in mind that moderation decisions may be final.
    • When reporting posts and/or comments, quote which rule is being broken, and why you feel it broke the rules.
Banned Artists

The following artists are banned from the community.

  1. Jago
  2. Stonetoss
  3. GPrime85

It should be noted that when you make reports, it is your responsibility to provide rational reasoning why something should be removed. Saying it simply breaks community rules is not always good enough.

Web Accessibility

Note: This is not a rule, but a helpful suggestion.

When posting images, you should strive to add alt-text for screen readers to use to describe the image you're posting:

Another helpful thing to do is to provide a transcription of the text in your images, as well as brief descriptions of what's going on. (example)

A nonplussed character wearing a feathered leather hat and a backpack full to bursting says to a disgruntled man "aight it's been real but im disappearing into the woods forever."

The would-be hermit turns only his eyes toward the man as he raises his arms in frustration and shouts "you can't just fuck off into the woods, you have to stay here!"

The man's expression softens into confusion as his conversational parter's backpack comes to the fore of his vision as he simply departs. A narrator adds "but he could. And he did."

The traveler is seen at great distance as the man continues looking on. The narrator continues. "And no one ever saw him again."

Plenty of homeless camps in the woods get busted each year.

[–] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

"Oh no, I'll have to pretend to leave and then move 200 meters and no one will find me for 8 months."

Really, the biggest issue is not dying. That's the thinker

When the cops bust a homeless camp... they don't just let the homeless people go. Also, after they find one, they patrol the area periodically... there are common sites they crop up. Sorry, it's just not that easy to escape to unoccupied land, that is unpoliced. It's a nice dream, but it's not the reality of the world.

i think you are mixing two things together. these homeless people are not adventurer types that want to get off the grid for the sake of it - they just don't have the roof over their head, but need to camp as close to civilization as possible, so they could still scavenge its scraps. they could go further, but there would be no supermarket to dumpster dive to.

you beg to differ what? that clip supports literally every word i said. it is in the city, full of found/bought/stolen merchandise, including fuel, they would not have access to in the wilderness.

A woman my wife works with took in a teenage boy (a relative, but I don't remember the connection) whose mother walked into the woods one day and disappeared. Her car was found, she wasn't. I think the father had passed away already, so when the mother vanished, the kid had no one else.

Poor kid lost his mother, then had to move cross country, losing all of his friends, too. A shit situation for everyone involved.

(No one ever saw him again because he starved to death in a remote gully 7 months later, in the depth of winter.)

(But on the plus side, he never had to attend another Teams meeting or see another Facebook meme.)

[–] jimmy90@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

his name was ted kasinski

[–] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 34 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Oh shit, he got 7 whole months without politics and llms??

[–] aksdb@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Ne, he actually tried to live in the forest first, but he had to witness how forest workers constantly cut down trees left and right and that made him sad again and he had to flee further.

[–] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 days ago

Into the sub-forest, like that time I retreated to the sub-basement because my parents were fighting too much.

[–] bertlewirth@lemy.lol 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

ah, the Ted Kaszinski way, minus the bombing of course.

[–] drath@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You can always add the bombing later

[–] 14th_cylon@lemmy.zip 1 points 15 hours ago

but you need to add math proof earlier.

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

I'm getting to that point myself (and yes, I've had survival training)

I can assure you it's not just a masculine urge

[–] nastronot@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 day ago

Indeed. I should have blanked it out but I also had the masculine urge to be lazy

[–] Techlos@lemmy.dbzer0.com 27 points 2 days ago (2 children)

i know someone who did that... buggered off into the qld bush to brew moonshine and grow ganja.

Every couple of years he'll hit me up on IRC and send deep cut psytrance bootlegs, fun times.

[–] hogmomma@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Yeah, cool, but IRC? I genuinely didn't know that was a thing anymore.

[–] 14th_cylon@lemmy.zip 28 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

good news is - after you die, they will make a movie and after seeing it, a few dozen people will try to replicate your steps and die in the process, so you will inspire quite a few people!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Proenneke The linked person did this for a couple decades in alaska. Yearly trades with a friend who came over by seaplane and landed on the local lake. they exchanged some goods, i think Proenneke made some oils from the wilderness and the visitor brought like medicine and shoes or something. He eventually had to come back to society because he couldn't chop enough wood to keep himself warm in the winter anymore.

Richard(Dick) Filmed himself setting up and his first year or couple years. This was edited into 3 or 2 films (Alone in the wilderness). you should look for them online, they are available for free if you look in the right spots. I think there's 4 hours of edited film in total of his story.

[–] Tja@programming.dev 2 points 1 day ago

He went back to society because he was 83, i think it's fair... (he visited family durimg the time he lived in Alaska).

nonplussed character

nonplussed /nΙ’nˈplʌst/ The word nonplussed traditionally means surprised, confused, and unsure how to react (left at a loss for what to say or do).

TIL, if I heard this word used in a less clear context I'd assume it's like tier 3 lgbt slang or something lmao.

[–] LogicalDrivel@sopuli.xyz 8 points 2 days ago

Nonplussed is one of those words that means the opposite of what i think it would, intuitively.

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

We laugh but this is what we should do

https://people.com/family-living-off-the-grid-died-of-malnutrition-hypothermia-autopsy-7965000

The reality in most developed nations is that people do not have the skills required anymore and even if they did the environment is not and never has been capable of supporting 8 billion apes strip foraging the wilderness. Modern farming techniques and medicine are both why the global population has exploded in the last two centuries and the loss of either will immediately devastate humanity.

Tl;Dr that shit was hard when people knew mostly what to do and you don't

[–] funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

People have forgotten how easy it is to die. Doctors would slip while doing an autopsy and die from sepsis within a week

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 1 points 15 hours ago

Most of us would die :(

[–] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago

Most would die within 1 month. The average is 2 weeks alone for an untrained person.

[–] SharkAttak@kbin.melroy.org 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Until they came to cut the forest down...

[–] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago

You can't just fuck off into the plains you need to stay here!

But they could. And they did.

[–] Quexotic@infosec.pub 5 points 1 day ago
[–] WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

My plan too, was supposed to have done it by now. But I have debt thanks to my parents, and them too to take care of.

But I will start saving in secret again when I can and fuck off somewhere.

One day, no one will ever see me again, and many will certainly celebrate.

But I'd like to remind those people, they contributed to make this world unlivable in the first place.

I want to leave because there is no fair way for me to exist within the system.

I have debt thanks to my parents, and them too to take care of. [...] I will start saving in secret again when I can

May you find your patch of woods one day.

[–] OpenStars@discuss.online 4 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Hrm, I see this meme just prior to certain elections...

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago

Look, there's plenty of posts trying to suppress votes. I get that. That's not what this is. I'm certain this has nothing to do with the election. Are we only allowed to make posts that tell people to vote near an election?

[–] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

If, realistically, inspiring like 2 people worldwide to escape into the wilderness is enough to sway an election, I'll eat my shoe. There's always an upcoming election

Even those 2 can still vote and then disappear into the woods.

It is not like they would lose anything doing that.
