This is the first time I see a real airplane crash, and not some CGI simulation, the sheer speed of that aircraft is crazy to witness.

The last adsb ping had it descending at > 30000 feet per minute. That means they were traveling over 300 mph straight down. I've read about a large number of aviation accidents, and this is the first time I've ever seen vertical speeds that extreme.

[–] Zoomboingding@lemmy.world 38 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Yeah this is a crazy accident. They basically plummeted from cruising altitude. The audio is devastating to hear.

[–] Assassassin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 27 points 4 days ago (14 children)

Yeah, I was not ready for that audio. It happened so fast, but you could still tell how aware the pilots were of how unrecoverable the situation was. RIP, they didn't deserve to go out like that.

It was more or less in free fall the entire time. Likely reached terminal velocity. They tried to roll the plane to get lift back which is why the plane is sideways, but they couldn't pitch it back up.

One of the current theories is the stabilizers on the tail got obstructed or damaged by ice. They detached at some point before the crash. They were found a few miles away from the crash site today.

It's looking like it was more likely 580mph or so, as the ADSB maxes out at 32k feet/min

Craziest footage ive seen in a while. This plane turned to dust almost instantly. At least they did not suffer.

[–] IphtashuFitz@lemmy.world 11 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Unfortunately their last 30 seconds or so were likely sheer terror…

[–] Geelgroenebroccoli@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Oh yes. Voice recordings of the communication between the pilots and the Air Traffic Controller can be found online.

Tip: Don't listen to it.

[–] IphtashuFitz@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago

Yeah, I’ve seen all the warnings. I’m more than happy to avoid it.

Effing Facebook idiots are full on conspiracy cover up mode with this. Spouting it was really a missile and the plane and radio traffic was all a Psy op cover up and shit. They're nutty as hell. It wouldn't even make sense.

[–] CorrectAlias@piefed.blahaj.zone 16 points 3 days ago (2 children)

If it was a missle, wouldn't it have actually hit something worth using an expensive missle on? Not just a random road in Florida?

We're not marking death videos with NSFW these days?

[–] Zombie@feddit.uk 67 points 4 days ago (8 children)

Is it NSFW? There's no gore, no nudity, and no swearing. The title and community already state it's not exactly feel good but I don't see anything that you wouldn't see in any Marvel movie.

Some servers (including the one I'm on just now) don't show anything tagged as NSFW, as an easy means of complying with stupid internet laws. Using the NSFW tag as a catch all term for anything you may not want to see then censors large amounts of content.

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 14 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Why would you be involved in a server that blocks content like that. Basically every Lemmy browser has the option to not show NSFW content. This shouldn't be done at the instance level and should be left for the user. You should move instances.

Yes watching this video knowing that 9 people have died upon impact makes this a death video.

What's so wrong with erring on the side of caution and putting NSFW or a CW up?

The title and community already state it’s not exactly feel good but I don’t see anything that you wouldn’t see in any Marvel movie.

Just because you are desensitized to watching death doesn't mean the rest of us are.

[–] Zombie@feddit.uk 32 points 4 days ago (8 children)

CW fair enough, but NSFW blocks it from several servers erroneously.

I've seen war and missiles first hand and this still seems surreal. (I know it's a plane but I mean how fast tgey come down)
