Its not completely gone https://movie-web.github.io/docs/instances there is alternate instances of it and you can self host it also.

How hard is it to set up? Is there a docker file?

[–] aPirate@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 8 months ago

The site I linked says that the backend can be hosted with docker though I'm unsure for the frontend. I haven't dug that much myself, but that is the official site of the creator so it should have all the instructions needed. From what I can tell is it is going to take a good amount of effort to get set up. Hope this helps.

I don't understand why these projects keep appearing on fucking GitHub lol.

I know it is not the case right now, but still if anyone has the answer please let me know.

Because it's easy and free, GitHub has great static page hosting

that isn't Immune to takedown either, just a DMCA to the host and the site is gone

[–] spez_@lemmy.world 4 points 8 months ago

The host is your house in China or Russia

They didn't need to have a completely secure solution, but they don't have to make it as easy as possible.

Tragic. The UI was so clean

[–] Chozo@kbin.social 20 points 8 months ago

Shame, that one was easy enough that even my mom was able to watch her shows. Hopefully the Hydra regenerates quickly.

Anybody have any recommendations for my friends who are too lazy/scared to go down the actual piracy route? Movie-web was my goto

[–] shaytan@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 8 months ago (3 children)

Download stremio, install the "torrentio" addon, and you're good to go, search a movie and play it, it keeps track of half watched movies and series, has subtitles integration with opensubtitles, and supports tv android pc etc

If you have the money, pay for real debrid and you'll get better reliability

Torrentio is a terrible citizen in the torrent world. It only leeches, never seeds, and it ties up a connection on a seeder until you finish watching the movie. With Real Debrid it's okay.

This is my exact setup, but I use premiumize. And I have a Plex server setup for anything obscure. But that’s all too much for a couple of my friends, but they loved movie-web.app

Set them up on your account.

Torrentio isn't in the list of addons

[–] ShadowCat@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago) (1 children)

yes, you need to install it from here: https://torrentio.strem.fun/lite/configure

you can find more info on r/StremioAddons. (sadly there isn't a lemmy equivalent)

[–] WarmSoda@lemm.ee 3 points 8 months ago

Thank you so much, that worked perfectly!

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 11 points 8 months ago

Free Media Heck Yeah is glorious. Incidentally, that's where I originally found movie-web myself!

[–] nieceandtows@programming.dev 11 points 8 months ago (1 children)

The frontend works for me, but doesn't play any videos

[–] SBS1313@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Same i am getting an error such as showboxs failure. Dats when i self host it

[–] nieceandtows@programming.dev 2 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Oh I thought self hosting would not have errors. That one's not working either?

[–] SBS1313@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 8 months ago

It does work maybe its an error in my end I never hosted before so i cant argue U can self host a proxy and it works flawlessly but hosting a version of the website doesnt ....

[–] speedbeef@lemmy.world 1 points 8 months ago

It's back up and working fine now.
