Here's everything we know about it so far:

  • It will use ActivityPub.
  • It will be a side app of Instagram.
  • It will most likely be called Threads.
  • Your Instagram verification status will transfer over.
  • There will be easy discovery tools in place: Your Instagram followers will be able to follow you on Threads as well (they won't transfer over automatically).

What do you think?

No. What's the Web 2.0 version of Embrace, Extend, Extinguish. Because that. Oh, and because that company is toxic waste. No, worse that that. At least toxic waste comes with the promise that enough work would leave it inert.

[–] NexNecis@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 year ago

I think I'm done with corporate social media.

[–] AGTMADCAT@infosec.pub 5 points 1 year ago

Oh gods no, that's one of the only companies who would make an even more toxic mess of a platform. I'll stick with the fediverse, thanks.

Really hard to trust Meta. They could help advance ActivityPub. Or maybe they go full Microsoft Embrace Extend Extinguish and damage the Fediverse. Or it could be benign. Look at XMPP where it was adopted by big companies but they eventually stopped federating and down the line replaced it with their own proprietary protocols.

[–] Segnis@beehaw.org 5 points 1 year ago

Even if I end up hating it, I think overall this is a good thing as it'll help introduce more people to federated social media.

Facebook behaved immorality. It rebranded as Meta, and now they want to trick some, by saying that Instagram is making a Twitter Clone... Facebook was already Twitter's competition, from 2006 onwards.
This is my long-winded way of saying "nope".

[–] thefingolfin@beehaw.org 4 points 1 year ago

Seems very unlikely for me. I have been actively avoiding anything Meta

[–] buhala@sopuli.xyz 4 points 1 year ago

Honestly I only currently use Twitter to get information on companies that don't really post live updated anywhere else. I'd either stay on twitter or follow them to wherever they move

[–] cvrz@mightywolf.ch 4 points 1 year ago

@cih@beehaw.org @technology@beehaw.org still Meta 🤮

[–] miles@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

don't use twitter, facebook, or instagram, so...

[–] Dan_Rachevaski@beehaw.org 4 points 1 year ago

Meta .....nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope

I'm only on Facebook just because of family and some IRL friends. My instagram is pretty much dead. And I would not going to join yet another Meta platform seeing how a cesspool Facebook is now.

[–] liam@mastodon.gruezi.net 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

@cih Definitely won't join myself, but I could totally see it being something that my friends who have been more hesitant to try the Fediverse might be willing to use/a first step to pull them in

[–] thatonedude1210@beehaw.org 4 points 1 year ago

I'll still prefer Mastodon

[–] harbo@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 year ago

I’ll stick with Mastodon, but if it’s enabled through the fediverse I won’t want to ban their posts

[–] Djokkum@rammy.site 4 points 1 year ago

Why would I? Lemmy is honestly a breath of fresh air, and if anything I feel like I should move away from social media hosted by big tech companies.

[–] Tony_Pepperoni@beehaw.org 4 points 1 year ago

Join anything from Meta? Hell naw!

Plus, it will be integrated with Instagram? Even further hell naw!

[–] worfamerryman@beehaw.org 4 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Why? We already have mastodon.

I hope they get defederated immediately. There's not much more Facebook can do to prove they are a bad faith actor.

[–] thegiddystitcher@beehaw.org 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Coming at this from a slightly different angle, as I do use Instagram and it was responsible for helping my YT channel and therefore my business in general take off.

I'm already on Mastodon, so would have no need to use this. However, I've really come to despise IG and find interacting with it to be more of a chore than anything. So an option for my friends and viewers from IG to communicate with me without me having to actually log in over there? I can just stay on Mastodon and run everything from one place? Sounds fine to me!

(pending evidence of good faith as discussed elsewhere in thread)

I think that's going to be one of the big ifs about the new platform. The optimist in me really wants to give Meta the benefit of the doubt here. If they do this "right," I think it has the potential to do great things for building up content and exposure and letting people do things their way. But admittedly I have some wariness of Meta, and I'm aware that it's likely in their MO to mess things up in the name of profit or similar.

I suppose the approach I'll end up taking will err towards a Wait and See perspective 🤷‍♂️

No way I’m touching anything facebook owns

[–] primaryuser@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

No.

Easiest question of my life.

[–] Xenxs@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Hard pass. Twitter is a toxic cesspool and this one will no doubt turn out the same. The fact that it's Meta is an even bigger turnoff.

[–] JC1@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 year ago

The main thing I dislike is that it will use the name Threads. Finding info on Thread, the network protocol for home automation devices, will be much harder. Might be niche, but annoying.

[–] metalero@feddit.de 4 points 1 year ago

Nah, sticking to Fediverse and Nostr.

[–] HorseFD@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

I'll stick with Mastodon. Is it a slight improvement over Musk, though? I guess.

[–] LilBagOfBunnies@beehaw.org 4 points 1 year ago

I never really used Twitter to begin with, minus to follow some news, protests, and a few NBA players. I wouldn't mind Twitter having some competition though so I could drop it entirely!

[–] courts@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

No. Never had a Facebook account, not interested in the slightest.

doesn't matter if it uses ActivityPub, it's made by meta, so definitely no

[–] resketreke@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

They would have to pay me handsomely for me to even consider it.

[–] 314xel@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I've got all Meta IPs blocked at DNS level via PiHole on my LAN. I'm not that crazy to click the disable button. The gates of hell will remain closed in my house.

[–] kresten@feddit.dk 3 points 1 year ago

They'll probably try to deploy 'Embrace, extend, extinguish' on ActivityPub
