Yeah, that's along the lines of what I'm asking about, albeit instead of a subscription check more like, I think, however the instances disabling/removing downvoting have done so, but adjusting the scope strictly to the Local or All views.

Another approach to addressing outsider/passive voting behaviors.

Aside from personally posting more regularly there, any advice or ideas for getting !likethismaylike@lemm.ee going? Had a few people early on posting and even some people beside myself replying to them, but it rapidly trailed off from there and felt a little too much like I was only using it for myself.

Started to make other types of post to help show it's as much for sharing as asking, but while the posts had some passive positive attention, it didn't net much more activity.

Doesn't the Earth deserve the occasional pizzafice?

Appreciate the example! It's when handling a DHCP range and the related CIDR notation that I tend to get especially muddled in this area. It certainly doesn't help that each router's interface and terminology tends to vary just enough to add uncertainty.

Regardless, the comments here and more focus on this have helped clear some of this up for me.

...How are they able to continue providing these but not maintain the Bridge Access Program for the uninsured? 🤨

Dr. Jill Stein has improved the Green Party; y’all just believe anything the duopoly and owner-class media spit out when it agrees with your thinking.

In what ways, alongside the one point mentioned, and according to what sources (presumably not from the party itself)?

Appreciate the thoughtful reply! I can see where you're coming from in terms of opening TLDs up creating a bunch of issues, even though I do still enjoy the more playful ones despite that.

It's honestly a little surprising that so many have been made available given the issues it can present, but I think that's largely a byproduct of approaching the internet less from a rigidly structured perspective and more of a loose informal perspective.

do you think you'd be able to tell if it was instead a massive homelab run by the microorganisms in your house?

Personally, the childish side of me will always get a kick out of .wtf in a website name.

And even though this is lemmy, when I searched for “Ubuntu Help”, there’s no community named that. There’s also no community named “Linux help”. Which I find very very odd. Lemmy of all places you’d think would have a linux help community!

Have you been by !linuxquestions@lemmy.zip yet? Nevertheless, this community should work just as well.

There's also !linux4noobs@programming.dev or a community with the same name on Lemmy World. When specificity in a search fails, falling back to broader/more basic terms may help (e.g. searching for Ubuntu or Linux).

Is this part of your sibling goofing routine?

Not really from a privacy concern, that's simply a bonus, more of a reliability/convenience interest. Even if internet/mobile internet is out for some reason, being able to easily text across local network would be nice.

For Windows/Android mainly, but crossplatform tools that include those are great too!

As you can find in the link, Robot Carnival is an older animated anthology movie from 1987 with a similar scifi focus. It's by no means the same beyond that though, but still a good watch if you're a fan of scifi animation.

Also it's pretty easy to find somewhere to watch it for free across different streaming services, e.g. Retrocrush, Tubi, Freevee, Roku Channel, etc.

Sometimes what I'm interested in may be more specific or niche, but a lot of search engines and filtering systems don't seem to provide a way to drill down to those results. What may be some reasons behind that?

Or am I overlooking some obvious ways to search/filter this way?

Brogue's a more up to date spin on the classic game Rogue, with some slight modern touches to make it more approachable to newcomers while keeping to the spirit of the original.

Recently saw some posts about interest in following posts/comments for replies with PieFed, which made me wonder about essentially the opposite.

In Lemmy there's presently no option for this, and I gather similar functionality (auto-follow submitted posts & notify for replies) is on PieFed, but can't tell if there's any option to disable notifications/unsubscribe from one's own posts (yet).

**edit:**Thanks for the reply @andrew_s@piefed.social! From their reply on PieFed:

It does, yes. When you make a post or comment, there's a tick-box with 'Notify about replies'. It's ticked by default, but unticking it before you submit means you won't get notification about replies.

After that, you can change the status using the same bell icon that you use for other people's content. To subscribe to your post, I'd change the bell from struck-through to clear, and to unsubscribe to my own post, I'd change the bell from clear to struck-through.

Unfortunately this reply didn't federate so I only got around to checking PieFed's version of this thread today and read it. Seems some more stuff to work out in this regard

I'm thinking of ways to help people move from established software to more open, flexible forms that don't lock them to another organization.

Perhaps after some amount of time having announced themselves over in !newcommunities@lemmy.world and !communitypromo@lemmy.ca, or...I don't know if there are communities for instances (the fediverse communities, presumably?), but likewise for them?

The combination of a promotional space and discussion for helping grow communities/instances could help ensure there's always some activity keeping this community visible to those seeking help.

By this I sort of mean like, in the case of Lemmy for example, something like a built-in Lemmyverse of sorts.

It wouldn't be pulling in data yet from other instances, but it would enable seeing that their communities were out there so you could then tell your server you'd like to subscribe/follow/etc. their community/channel/account.

Tbh despite having been around the fediverse for awhile, I'm not sure how else ActivityPub servers were supposed to have these different things found to start with.
