The madden story was kinder to the Patriots by only mentioning the charter in passing.

The story is madden came to the hospital and was incensed that no one was there. He called the airport, reported the extent, demanded to speak to Fairbanks, insisted he get off the plane, to of course no avail.

Madden loved football. And he loved the players that played it.

The problem no one wants to admit is there isn't a secret cabal of great refs out there. These are the best refs, and they can get far worse

Because like anything else, new techniques are applied over time. Pro sports wasn't as gamed in the past as it is today.

The fact is simple, a game in April means a lot more than a game in January. So teams are load managing guys. Players could force the issue...but why would they? They also want to win a chip more than win a random game in Detroit in December.

It sucks for fans, but that's the incentive the NBA gives.
