While filming Matilda (1996), he and Rhea Perlman basically took in their 8-year-old co-star, Mara Wilson, after her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer early into production. Sadly, her mom died before the movie was released, but Danny visited her in the hospital to screen a near-complete cut of the film.
