Just did this on the AliExpress 11/11 sale. Picked a big store with lots of previous sold examples, but we'll see how I do. How did you know yours was fake? Did it have an ST1901 or no?

Lots of watches that would fit, but how about the Seiko 5 GMT? This would be SSK001, 003, 005 etc… they are GMT watches, which is a desirable complication usually found in more expensive watches, they have good water resistance and lume, and the jubilee style bracelet makes them look a little fancier than they would otherwise. You can find them just under $300 on eBay new.
There is no $1000 investment watch, and by and large watches are shit investments anyway. You should decide if you wanna buy him a watch or invest for him. You cannot do both.
I wear every watch I have, even my late father’s Rolex that’s about 10x as expensive as I could afford to replace. I’m of the opinion that watches aren’t investments and you shouldn’t buy anything you are afraid to wear and potentially damage or lose. Obviously there’s other philosophies like collecting antiques for display, but for new watches, buy what you’ll enjoy
I’ve had this with many brands. Never seen a Longines in person but interested to see if I have the same effect. Hamilton and Seiko have both done this for me in both directions for many models (I.e some I hated actually look amazing in person and vice versa). It makes me want it see anything in person before I commit to buying it b
For me, I refuse to save for a watch. If it costs more than I can easily spare in between paychecks, then it’s too expensive for me. At my current pay, that’s like $1000 watch once a year or so. I suppose when and if I make a lot more, I’ll spend more on watches. But for me, needing to save for something so unnecessary is just impossible.
I think Seiko is great for that price range, as is citizen and Tissot. I would say try to find local watch stores or Macy’s to try things on, but you might find better prices online at eBay etc../
I know it’s not popular to say on this sub, but Invicta Pro Diver. Seiko movement, looks like a submariner so classic design, and reasonable price. I’d rather do that than an older Seiko 5 like others have suggested.
Rolex Datejust if you can afford it, or Omega Aqua Terra, or if money is a hair tighter than that, Christopher Ward Sealander or Dune.
I almost bought a Tudor Black Bay Pro when it came out, but finances just weren't quite right for it. So I looked at a few different GMT's instead, and bought a Seiko Sharp Edge GMT. Great watch, true GMT and wonderful finishing, but I just didn't bond with it. I didn't like wearing it, didn't want to wear it, and when I sold it, I lost like $400 compared to what I had paid. I suppose the lesson would be buy the watch you actually want, not the runner up, but hilariously I never ended up with the Tudor, and now that I have the Mido Ocean Star GMT, I don't feel like I need that Tudor at all. So really it's just that the Seiko wasn't the right watch for me.
Great watch choice. I’m not totally up on Seiko 5 prices, but that sounds reasonable.
New ones on eBay!
