why is this highlight title an oped

[–] hellofloss@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

one is an objective stats post

one is a discussion post

neither is idiotic

Draymond Green has been receiving attention for his non-basketball activities.

However, lost in the controversy is the fact that he is shooting the lights out. He is shooting 48.2% from the field, 45% from 3, and 88.9% from the FT line

In fact he is the most accurate 3-point shooter on the Warriors currently at 45%. He slightly edges out Steph Curry at 44.2% for the top shot, although Steph does shoot 12.1 attempts per game to Draymond's 2.2

If Draymond keeps this up and manages to get into the 50/40/90 club, would that be the most surprising entry to the club of all time?

The other members of the club from the 2000s would be:

- Steve Nash

- Dirk Nowitzki

- Kevin Durant

- Steph Curry

- Malcolm Brogdon

- Kyrie Irving

and then maybe Draymond Green?

Your numbers are wrong

https://www.basketball-reference.com/leagues/NBA_2024_advanced.html#advanced_stats::ts_pct

KD is at 65.7 TS% Steph is at 68.1 TS%

Steph has been the more efficient scorer overall though KD has a more volume

Candidates off the top of my head are:

- Dame

- Steph

- Luka

Obviously Harden was one of the best at his peak but likely not now

Loyalists (2 or fewer teams):

PG: Magic Johnson / Steph Curry

SG: Michael Jordan / Kobe Bryant

SF: Larry Bird / Jerry West

PF: Tim Duncan / Dirk Nowitzki

C: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar / Hakeem Olajuwon / Bill Russell

Mercenaries (3+ teams):

PG: Chris Paul / Steve Nash

SG: Dwyane Wade / Allen Iverson

SF: LeBron James / Kevin Durant / Kawhi Leonard

PF: Kevin Garnett / Charles Barkley

C: Shaquille O'Neal / Wilt Chamberlain

Who would win this match-up? You get to mix and match starters and bench if you want

Note: I left out some of the younger all-time greats like Jokic and Giannis who would be loyalists, since it's early enough that they're not guaranteed to be loyalists (obviously seems very likely though). Steph was the one active loyalist that I allowed since at the age of 35, it seems extremely unlikely he'll get to 3+ teams before he retries

White people have a systemic advantage over black people in this country. I think we can agree on that

If there's a profession where black people make up the majority of the elites, then it's probably not going to be because they received an unfair advantage or because the system was oppressing the white people. It's likely to be because of other factors like culture. Why? Because black people don't have a systemic advantage over whites in this country, so that cannot be the reason

If there's a profession where white people make up the majority of the elites, especially in a field that is majority black, then it's much much more likely that the white structural advantage that we've proven exists in so many other fields is playing itself out in exactly the same way in that field

Why would we presume that there is white structural advantage in all these other fields (STEM, medicine, politics, etc.) but NOT in broadcasting which is EVEN WHITER than those other fields?

The US is 60% white

NBA viewership is only 40% white (there are more black viewers at 45%)

There's no way that should translate to 92% of announcers being white

Source for the statistics about the announcers: https://thehill.com/changing-america/enrichment/arts-culture/562133-nba-commentators-racial-bias-is-showing-according-to/

Why is it that most of the players in the league are black but most of the voices commentating on the games over the airways are white?

It's because we have a bias toward white voices and white-sounding people. We don't want a "black-sounding voice" commentating on our basketball even though that would be more representative of the league today. Most of the black people who commentate games are color commentators rather than play-by-play. They provide the "basketball knowledge" while the white play-by-play man is the voice we want on the big moments. For some reason, the voices of Kevin Harlan, Mike Breen, and Marv Albert feel right to us. We say that they just have the "right voice for announcing." But do we realize that when we imagine the "right voice for announcing" it's basically always a white cis-man's voice in our head? That's what represents gravitas and dignity for us. Even black announcers like Mark Jones clearly have to whitewash their voices in order to be fit for the American airways

I think we would all benefit if we were more mindful of this disparity and found ways to give more of the radio and television jobs to black people, until the distribution matches that of the league.

KD. Thought he was a boring goody-two-shoes with the Thunder. I like how he embraced the villain role with the Warriors and subsequently. Now he's my favorite player

Plot

Sorry it's a huge image since I wanted to fit in as many players as possible. So it's probably hard to see on phone unless you really zoom in.

Good efficient outing from Steph today to break the Warriors' losing streak

He continues his streak of 14 straight games with 4+ made 3s, which is an NBA record

https://www.espn.com/nba/boxscore/_/gameId/401584852

Not an efficient night from Curry. He was 3/10 from inside the 3-point arc. Chet had him in jail in the point, and then SGA blocked his 3-point shot at the end

Overall wasn't good enough in the clutch to get it done

https://www.espn.com/nba/boxscore/_/gameId/401584835

Pretty cold moment. Would be cool to see it again if someone can clip it.

One day I will be able to be self-sufficient and clip these myself but not today

Klay Thompson looking good this first half. Looks like he's finally shaking off the early season blues and getting back into Klay shape

Source: https://www.espn.com/nba/boxscore/_/gameId/401584835

Source: https://www.nba.com/stats/player/202691/shooting

I feel like every time I see Klay Thompson dribble into a midrange, it's a difficult fadeaway or pull-up or something and he rarely makes it. Even if he does make it, it's 2 points rather than 3. I wanted to confirm how he shoots on midranges and the stats match the eye test. He is not good from midrange, even last year which is considered a pretty good year for him

The last 3 years from 10+ ft

- 2021-22: 40.3%

- 2022-23: 40.6$

- 2023-24: 38.2%

Klay basically shoots the same 40% from 3, which is far more valuable (60TS vs 40TS)

Why does Klay shoot these midranges at such a bad rate when he could only take 3s and be a relatively efficient scorer?
