Kasa plugs are like $8 each and use wifi. I have a drawer full of them.

If you use Home Assistant you can pitch that ring alarm. I did my own alarm in Home Assistant. You can use any number of triggers to arm the alarm.

With Home Assistant you can also use Keymaster and program the locks keycodes from Home Assistant. Much easier than using the lock to program codes.

Let this be an education for you. Only investment you should make is with yourself. Your friend was underfunded and had no chance to succeed. Besides, all he had to do is pay himself a salary and declare that there was no profits.

You got suckered. Move on to something better. Learn your lesson then forget about it.

If you have a zwave or zigbee dongle or any dongle for that matter, unplug it wait 15 seconds and then plug it back in. If that fails after 2 minutes restart the controller.

I have a pair of them. For the price you can't beat them. Sure there are better ones. You should get one and try it out. If you don't use if for streaming you can use it to know what your home automations are doing. It's easy to cast text to voice to them.

I do this with the home assistant, honeywell zwave t6 and a zooz temperature sensor.
