I moved to a place with bedbugs (I was unaware at the time and furious when the landlord was nonchalant about "oh, yeah, they're a problem")

I am glad you've never had to go through the trauma of bed bugs. They were a bug I broke my "put outside and don't torture" rule for. I had enough I was able to capture multiple and throw them in jars with different things to see if anything affected them. Rubbing alcohol was insanely good at killing them

Yeah, let me edit the title! I guess that may not be widely known as it's not a super common plant. Which is why I'm super excited that it's been so happy since I picked it up

I don't really name my plants but this one has so much character I think it deserves it. I have been paying close attention to it nearly daily, telling it to grow and waiting for some activity. It went completely dormant almost 6 months ago as the days got shorter. The bulb stayed plump and green and I gave it just a bit of water, enough to keep it from going soft while it recovered for the next season, and bringing it inside during the coldest bit of winter because it wouldn't survive a freeze unprotected

A common name is Frizzle Sizzle, but the scientific name is Albuca spirialis

It's a perennial bulb as long as you don't let it freeze. They're native to south Africa

I made a post a bit over a year ago about this guy:
https://lemmy.world/post/25891935

After I braved up and put it outside it absolutely flourished!

The leaves curled right up to the bulb, divided itself, and even gave me a few flowers! Unfortunately I didn't get flower pictures, it was a bit hectic. But they grew a tall stalk with unassuming yellow, nodding flowers

It spent the darker, colder days sleeping but now the soil is staying warm through the night it knows it's time to come out. It's got two bulbs now growing and they each have a huge cluster of leaves starting to emerge; I counted at least eight from each. And the signature curling leaf is apparent even though it's just barely sprouting

Just don't look up at the asteroid and you won't have to have to acknowledge it

It wasn't hemp. The plant name may come to me later but it was commonly something else. I think it started with or had a D in it, and it had little yellow flowers

But yes, that shit was no fun. I've tried a few "spice" or "incense" back in the day. I can tell you some of those highs were absolutely no fun. I was high as shit but at times was too scared to try and move or do anything. "I don't want to try to move because I don't want to try to move and then find out I can't" and like "the person in the show is actually looking at me". Watching a show, live or animated, if the person on screen turned their head in my mind I saw their features pop out of the screen and then meld back in

I've never done psychedelics so that's the closest to tripping I've been but fucking hell that shit did my head in

Edit: ok, so the plant I commonly saw used as the smokeable herb was damiana

Also I forgot another term was "potpourri"

While trying to search the plant I came across the name of the shit that fucked me up, "mr happy or mr nice guy"

Oh yeah, that's why people think bugs are "chasing them". Well, that's my theory. I feel bad when I see a bug running to me for shade. I try to lead it to real shade by guiding it with the shadow from my hand or whatever is easiest for it to follow. I also rescue worms from concrete, or bugs from inside,. especially at work because I know people will just kill them :(

My sibling had a millipede for a while and I did hold it once at least once. But the feeling of it walking on my skin was so bizarre, but interesting and almost pleasing

Infodump gladly accepted!

The setup you've got for your millis is nearly identical to my gecko. I went with an attempt at bioactive, with basically the same substrate but I added a couple plants. I have 2 strong springtail colonies which I have poured into her cage. I tried putting some isopods in there but I have a feeling she ate them

Would isopods compete with the millis?

If you have or wanted to make a post about your critters I think it would have a warm (cold) reception. I, for one, would love to see more

Thanks for the reply! It made me happy

What an awesome setup! Can you give us some details about it?

They're adorable. Do you handle them? What are they doing in the last picture, just checking in with each other?

spoilerHiding these or other bugs in spoilers is silly. Especially these. It's not a super macro of their mouth parts which I'd still feel was silly but more understandable

My two cents.

Also, I see you got other things going on. Wanna share any other critters you have?

Here's my crested gecko, Yoshi, looking extra colored up

Granted I added one, but how does this have 10m views?

[–] tpyo@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

No way I hell am I making some dishes but as you said, if someone prepares for me one that I'd normally be turned off from, I'll enthusiastically join in (though I probably will wait for them to take the first bite)

Toro is one of my absolute favorites! So smooth and I find it buttery even

Oh man now I want some

Forest Whitaker as Jon Kavanaugh in "The Shield"

He made me so viscerally upset. I saw it almost two decades ago but I still remember how strongly I felt

The titles are:
"Reaper Man", "Small Gods", "Wyrd Sisters", "Moving Pictures"

Went to an adorable book shop and found these guys. I haven't read Pratchett yet but I feel it'll be right up my alley

I'm pretty sure I see "Small Gods" and "Wyrd Sisters" recommended a lot and I know you can't really go wrong, but of these which would you recommend the most? Since this is what I have I'll read them all eventually

Regardless I'm excited to have gotten physical copies because my library has long wait lists for his books

Edit: Thanks for all of the discussion! This post brought me a lot of positive on an otherwise rough day. I've decided to start with "Small Gods"

I just want to say again thank you to everyone who responded to me or to someone else. It's been a joy hearing what each person has to contribute to the conversation

Even if they fall flat (which I highly doubt) all of your enthusiasm came through and that really in itself means so much. It was truly touching

2 adults and 1 younger teen

We're going on a two week road trip that'll be fairly leisurely. Stopping by some parks and sights as we go and a few nights at our ultimate destination

I had my car recently serviced. It all checks out

I have a steam deck on the way! Any recommendations here for travel accessories? Or just in general?

We've all got devices and chargers and their respective blocks. I'm looking at a power inverter for the hungrier devices
I was debating bringing the oculus to give whomever a bit of isolation if they need; is there anything specific I'd need to do to use it where there's no internet? I haven't used it enough to be very familiar with most of its abilities

We adults have ps5s. Most likely won't bring one. I've seen portable monitors that people use with a local device; does anyone have experience using one for remote play for the ps5?

And making sure we've got entertainment downloaded to our devices; obviously books and offline/non electronic entertainment will be brought, as well

I'm really looking forward to this and want to make it the best experience for all involved! I look forward to hearing your tips

Edit to add: the point of the road trip is to bury my grandfather. And I'm petrified of flying in the current state of the US

Since we HAVE to make this trip we're trying to make the most of it by stopping by some state/national parks and other landmarks/pois during which we'll be present. But there's going to be LONG stretches of literally nothing exciting. Like corn fields. Many hours of corn fields. Most days are 6 - 10 hours in the car
