Las Vegas Mayor Shelley Berkley issued a heartfelt plea to Canadian visitors this week, acknowledging the city’s tourism-dependent economy is suffering from a dramatic decline in international visitors, particularly from Canada, which represents the city’s largest international market.

“As the mayor of Las Vegas, I’m telling everybody in Canada, please come. We love you, we need you, and we miss you,” Berkley said during a press conference this week, where she addressed the multiple challenges facing the entertainment capital’s tourism industry.

The mayor’s latest comments echo concerns she first raised in an August press conference, where she painted a stark picture of the tourism decline.

“International travel is way down. People are not coming to the United States,” Berkley said last month. “’

So how many of the 24 perpetrators of the 31 targeted political murders or attempted murders since 2018 were from the Left? Let’s count them..

In 2018, Cesar Altieri Sayoc was sentenced to 20 years prison for sending pipe bombs to nine prominent Democrats, including Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden and Maxine Waters. Sayoc was a registered Republican.

In 2020, 13 men attempted to punish Michigan’s Democrat Governor Gretchen Whitmer for enforcing Covid lockdown measures. All were far right extremists.

Roy Den Hollander murdered human rights lawyer Marc Angelucci in July 2020. He then tried to kill district judge Esther Salas, but succeeded instead in murdering her son and seriously wounding her husband. Hollander was a far right Trump supporter.

Quintez Brown attempted to kill Democratic Mayor of Louisville, Kentucky, Craig Greenberg, in February 2022. Brown was motivated by Black nationalism, pan-Africanism and revolutionary socialism.

In October 2022 David DePape seriously injured Paul Pelosi with a hammer while seeking to kill House of Representatives Speaker, Nancy Pelosi. DePape is a far right Trump supporter.

In December 2022, Solomon Peña paid gunmen to attack the houses of Democrat state lawmakers in New Mexico. Peña is a registered Republican and a former candidate for state office.

Craig Robertson was shot and killed by FBI agents in August 2023 while being arrested for threats against President Joe Biden and others. Robertson was an army veteran with extreme right wing views.

Donald Trump himself was targeted at a July 2024 rally in Pennsylvania. The shooter Thomas Crooks killed one attendee and injured three others, including Trump, whose ear was cut by a flying fragment. Crooks was a registered Republican.

Another attempt on Trump’s life, thwarted before completion, was made by Trump voter Ryan Routh in September 2024. The trial is continuing.

In April 2025, Cody Balmer attempted to kill Pennsylvania’s Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro in an arson attack which caused extensive property damage but no injuries. Balmer was a Trump supporter at the time.

The Democrat Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark Hortman were killed by avid Trump supporter and registered Republican Vance Boelter in June 2025.

Boelter then attempted to murder Minnesota Senator John Hoffman and succeeded in seriously injuring the senator and his wife.

Lastly, right wing influencer Charlie Kirk was shot last Wednesday by Tyler Robinson, a white student from a gun-loving Republican Mormon family. Robinson has no party links, but has reportedly embraced the extremism of right wing racist Nick Fuentes.

How many from the Left?

What do you run; Opnsense, pfsense, Smoothwall, maybe a WAF like wazuh?

Today was update/audit firewall day. I'm running a standalone instance of pFsense on a Protectli Vault FW4B - 4 Port - Intel Quad Core - 8GB RAM - 120GB mSATA SSD with unbound, pfBlockerNG, Suricata, ntopng, and heavily filtered. I did bump the swap to 8 GB as I've previously noticed a few 'out of swap' errors under load.

Before I signed off, I ran it through a couple porn sites to see if my adblocking strategy was working. Not one intrusive ad. Sweet!

Show me what you got.

As America enters a dark tunnel of dangerous internal divisions and an increasingly violent public discourse, Donald Trump is escalating his attacks on many of this nation's institutions.

One of the most dramatic battlegrounds is the US president's war on the media.

It was typified this week when Trump announced he was beginning a $US15 billion ($22 billion) defamation lawsuit against The New York Times.

It was not for any particular article, but rather a general dislike of one of the country's oldest, and most cherished, institutions. Trump is arguing the paper has become a mouthpiece for the Democrats and in general defames him.

He's doing this because it works for him. His MAGA base — the Make America Great Again loyalists who twice propelled him into the White House — delight in his attacks on the media.

This is happening in both big and small ways. The big ways are the lawsuits and threats. The small ways are how the Trump White House is, day by day, changing the composition of the journalists who can question the president and his spokespeople.

Hey, so I recently had the idea of proposing some new ideas, I had for the IT infrastructure of my local scouts organisation, mainly it's own nextcloud instance and website (and if that works well, maybey a matrix server and wiki, but website and nextcloud are much higher priority right now). But, I am wondering, what the best way to do the hosting would be. Using a VPS would be pretty nice, because there would be no upfront cost, but we would have to pay monthly fee and that's pretty hard to pitch for a new and untested idea, especially because we don't have that much regular funds/income. The other option would be to self host on hardware that stays in the building, but I am not quite shure, but then we would have a pretty steep upfront cost and I am not 100 percent shure, if we even have a proper network in the building.

The main thing, I am trying to ask here is, if any of you have ever done something similar before and if so, how you did it. Also I am thankful for any advice in general. I have done this already for my family, but doing this for an entire organistation is an entirely different thing. Thank you very much in advance!

practical healthspan community introductory pinned post

Welcome to Practical Healthspan

Live long and prosper.

Hey — I’m glad you’re here. Practical Healthspan is a space to talk about health in the everyday: better sleep, food that works for you, moving a bit (or a lot), managing stress, staying connected, and trying small experiments. No hype. No pressure. Just what works, backed by science when possible, and real stories when not.

What to expect

  • Friendly, curious vibes. We ask questions, share what we try, and learn together.
  • When we talk about studies or protocols, we label what kind of evidence it is. If it’s your experiment, we say so.
  • Be respectful. Critique ideas, not people. No “one-right way” energy.
  • We’re not medical advice. If something’s serious, talk to actual professionals.

If you’re new to the Fediverse / Lemmy please check out some of the links in the community description

Weekly threads you’ll see

  • Motivation Monday – What are you focusing on this week, health-wise?
  • Study Sunday – We dig into a research paper, pull out takeaways, and a small practical nudge.
  • Habit Check-In – Mid-week or end-of-week: what habits worked, what didn’t, what you’ll tweak.
  • Food-Prep Friday – Share recipes, meal ideas, what’s helping you eat better without stressing.
  • Tools & Gadgets – If you tried a new sleep tracker, app, kitchen gear, etc., share what worked or was meh.
  • Reflection Friday – What experiments or changes you tried this week, what surprised you, what next.

Quick rules (so we all feel good here)

  1. Be kind. Ideas over insults. No shaming someone’s body, food, choices.
  2. If you’re making claims, try to provide sources. If it’s from personal experience, label it.
  3. No medical advice. If you are discussing medication, serious health conditions, etc., recommend professional help.
  4. Disclose conflicts / affiliations (if you’re selling something, promoting something, etc.).
  5. No spam. Keep the vibes helpful.

Former President Barack Obama says that the United States is at “an inflection point” following the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk and that President Donald Trump has further divided the country rather than work to bring people together.

“There are no ifs, ands or buts about it: The central premise of our democratic system is that we have to be able to disagree and have sometimes really contentious debates without resorting to violence,” Obama said Tuesday night during an event in Erie, Pennsylvania, hosted by the Jefferson Education Society, according to a transcript obtained by The Associated Press.

“And when it happens to some, but even if you think they’re, quote, unquote, on the other side of the argument, that’s a threat to all of us,” he said. “And we have to be clear and forthright in condemning them.”

Obama has kept somewhat of a low profile in his post-presidency. Responding to a moderator’s questions Tuesday, he addressed Trump’s rhetoric after Kirk’s assassination, as well as other administrative actions.

The Democrat spoke about his own leadership following the 2015 slaying of nine Black parishioners at a Charleston, South Carolina, church, as well as Republican then-President George W. Bush’s actions following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. He said he sees the role of a president in a crisis “to constantly remind us of the ties that bind us together.”

The sentiment among Trump and his aides following Kirk’s killing of calling political opponents “vermin, enemies … speaks to a broader problem,” Obama said.

DENVER — The debate over the gas stove inside your home is headed to court.

Lawmakers passed a new Colorado law requiring safety labels on new gas stoves being sold. The law would require labels in both English and Spanish. Advocates say this would help people understand the impact of gas stoves on the air quality inside their homes.

On the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) website, the agency shared:

“There is evidence that particulate matter (PM), nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, benzene, formaldehyde, and methane can be released into indoor air from gas stoves.1"
"According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, indoor air pollutants can build up to levels that may affect people’s health if the space is not properly ventilated.2”

If a company doesn't comply with the safety label requirement, they could face a $20,000 penalty for deceptive trade practices, according to the new law.

Two days after CDPHE posted about the gas stoves, the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) filed an emergency injunction. It was filed the same day the law was supposed to go into effect.

JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon said on Wednesday he would comply with a subpoena to hand over any files or records associated with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The House Judiciary Committee is expected to vote Wednesday on whether to subpoena Dimon and three other major bank CEOs on their relationships with Epstein.

“We regret any association with that man at all. And, of course, if it’s a legal requirement, we would conform to it. We have no issue with that,” Dimon told reporters after leaving a Senate GOP lunch. “I think what happened to those women is terrible and any role we played in it.”

Epstein was a longtime client of Dimon’s bank, which settled a lawsuit brought by his victims in 2023.

Dimon did not say if the issue of Epstein came up during his meeting with Republican senators but said he addressed a number of other topics including issues around the Federal Reserve, the economy and growth.

When asked how he felt about broader economic conditions, Dimon said he’s in “the so far, so good category, but that’s not a forecast.”

Dimon also said he did not have concerns about Fed independence amid President Donald Trump’s criticism of the central bank.

“I think the Fed should be independent. Everyone I know says it should be independent,” he said. “I heard the President say, yeah, they should be independent.”
