A new user here (never used twitter before either). I subscribed to #wearos hashtag in the webgui. Day later I saw one post in my home screen. I answered it. Now in my home I see that post and my answer.

Q1: My answer does not have #wearos inside, why it is shown here?

Q2: the original post already had one answer from someone else, how one can see it?

Q3: how to see posts with hashtags I follow?

q4: does following a hashtag overrules language settings? I.e. there is a post written on "do-not-show-me" language, but with a hashtag I follow - will I see it.

Side question: according to explore->hashtags it shows me popular tags for today, in the list I see 1.2K posts for catuday, and few tags with 100 and less posts. This looks like that either no one use tags, or no one uses mastodon or I misunderstand description of "explore->hashtags"?

PS: mastodon.social instance

So yeah, a stupid mistake happened... I had my Fosstodon account, that I created with some stupid handle. Recently I wanted to return to Mastodon, see what has changed, and this handle annoyed me. Since I had nothing there, except for a few accounts I followed, I downloaded my data and thought, I just delete my account and create new one. And I didn't check, that Fosstodon is now invite-only... So I don't have account and I cannot create one without invite... I know, I can go to Mastodon.social, but Fosstodon resonates with me the most. Soooo... Can somebody dm me an invite? Would REALLY appreciate that...

I feel like mastodon at times falls a bit behind on some features, would be cool to see if we can implement native gifs as per
Feature suggestion: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/25742

Threads has implemented a native experience which is superior than copying and pasting a gif using a 3rd party keyboard or having to hunt it down from the web
Ref: https://www.threads.net/@threads/post/Cy32ZRHOzuC/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA%3D%3D

On that note, we are also missing emoji reactions, feels like we fall behind on the "fun" features

I read Mastodon in the latest Firefox desktop browser.

I can't seem to find a way to select alt text.

How can I copy alt text?

I am want to setup a mastodon instance on DigitalOcean for a Uni student society. How do I integrate the elk ui like Mozilla.social?

Should I have elk on my domain root and mastodon on the sub domain? How would that impact SEO? I don't want the sub domain to show up on google search results.

I checked mozilla's github repos, but I can't find any information on how they deployed elk ui with mastodon.

I am setting up a private instance for people in a small town. I need to accommodate individuals with mental health needs and this is the most important requirement for this project.

I need the option to restrict some members from posting toots or only allow their toots after they have been reviewed and approved by moderators.

Limiting or silencing their account doesn't help because their followers can still see their posts and some posts could cause distress to others.

I can't suspend accounts because of the mental health implications it could have if I prevent them from being part of the community.

Is there an easy way to accomplish this?

Wait! Before you raise your pitchforks, this is an instance-agnostic discussion, not calling anyone or any particular community out. :)

Clarifications:

  • I've been a member of several large instances, all completely unrelated and lacking overlap with each others participants and interests.

  • I'm also aware that with Mastadon it's largely "who you follow", but lets just for the sake of argument use the "main local feed" of your own instance as an example.

Now that that's covered, here's the complaint:

Posts trend towards giving play by play of someones day vs more in depth and topical discussions, which makes them hard to follow and huge context switches with little reward. Post seem as if the poster's brain is connected to the post API and every streaming thought they are having comes through. It feels "noisier" than typical of reddit, twitter, etc. It feels like they populate their own threads to a point of basically writing novels and dumping copy/pasta.

While I love Mastodon and will continue to support it and the instances I am involved in, I have to be honest: I've been forced to mute quite a lot of people, even those who I had purposely intended on following earlier on because it feels like they're using Mastodon as a personal notepad.

My concern is that this is just how Mastodon is being culturally accepted, and if so, I am not sure I like it. And if I don't like it, what will others think about it when considering switching to it?

Should we gatekeep? Should instances or users take a stand against this similarly to how we tell people on chat apps to stop pressing enter after every 3 words and instead write semi-lengthy comments? Should we demand posts have higher quality? Is this all just a compensation quantity over quality? Will the quality come when the community is bigger or will it never grow as a result, or worse, grow into more noise?

When signing up for mastohost with an existing domain I own (whatever.com) the signup process forced me to use a subdomain (something.whatever.com). I don’t currently have a website on that root domain, but I would like to one day. Do I really have to have a long three part domain? Is there a way around it or is this a limitation of mastodon/mastohost?

I use social media automation tools to schedule posts ahead of time several times a day. They suspended me out of the blue for "spam". I am using their API for this. Literally no "big tech" platforms have done this to me - not LinkedIn, X, etc. I am just shocked that Mastodon who claims to be the anti establishment is the only one that has "silenced" me.

For someone working on their personal brand and following, are there even benefits of sticking around Mastodon? From my limited knowledge of it, it seems that if I cannot be on the primary server, then there isn't much of a point for me being on Mastodon. Am I wrong on this assessment?

Hi

I am a computer science student and am just starting my masters thesis. My focus will be on content moderation (algorithms) and therefore I am currently exploring how some social media applications moderate content.

If I understand the docs correctly, content moderation on mastodon is all manual labor? I haven't read anything about automatic detection of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) for example which is a thing that most centralised platforms seem to do.

Another question which kind of goes in the same direction is reposting of already moderated content. For example a racist meme that was posted before. Are there any measures in place to detect this?

Thank you for your help!

I have been looking for a Twitter replacement. Mastodon looks like an interesting platform. I just have a few questions. If I'm on a server and I post something and someone (who is from other server) comments on my post does rules of server where I am apply to that comment? Is it easy to change servers if I will have to? Also which server would be a good option for me? I'm from Finland and I know we have a local server but their rules say I can only post in Finnish. I would want to use Finnish and English. I will probably post mostly in Finnish but sometimes also in English. Also I want a server which is fast. I want strict rules and moderation especially in LGBTQ+ topics. I left Twitter because I'm a trans woman and I don't want to use a platform where any form of transphobia etc. is allowed. I often feel like even Facebook etc. moderates transphobia poorly so I want a server which is very strict on that. So allowing racism, sexism or transphobia is a big no no. It would be good if there would be moderators who are also trans so they will know what is offensive (many cis people doesn't recongize less visible/direct transphobia).

I may post something political but politically I'm mixed (I have very very liberal opinions on LGBTQ+ and animal rights, economically moderate left but at the same time I'm not that "green" (I think we should support green solutions but I don't support banning less green options/technology.). Pretty much let everyone be free to live how they want as long as they don't hurt others). So politics has to be allowed but not discrimination.

I will follow many topics and people. I will want to see news and politics but also memes and hobbies (trans and pc/linux memes but also other techonology/pc/linux posts). So what I want to see is really mixed. I know I can follow people from other servers.

Also a cool but easily rememberable server name is a big plus.

I submitted a post and it looks like it is automatically collapsed, requiring a click to see all the text - but most other posts by other folks are automatically uncollapsed so you can see the whole thing. My post is four or five sentences long. What causes this?

So I was just giving Mastodon a look and was going to open an account... First message: "mastodon.social is full! please select a different server". Ok? so I go to find a different server with a list of topics on the left, "general" selected and a bunch of servers, that don't explain to me why I should join and often are described in languages I don't understand. At the top of the page there's a message: "New here? Check out the help section below.". Help section is not linked, text "help" not found anywhere else on the page... you've to scroll through all the servers to find it.

This app will never be able to get a remotely significant share of Twitter users like this. Most people don't care about it being decentralized and the servers with different moderation policies and how you can read feed between the servers or on the same server... they want to signup quickly, follow accounts they are interested in and see a feed.

Some constructive feedback: the decentralization can be mostly hidden. For example (if it really has to be) users could be asked about their moderation preferences, language, things like that, and be auto-suggested a server (with a button somewhere to change it if it happens to be a "nerd" user), no need to read help and explanations: that can be explored *after* users have signed up and found and followed accounts and are using the app.

Personally I love it, it has a much smoother interface; much cleaner and more modern.

I linked my Mastodon account to it a while ago but I just sort of forgot about it, until I was reviewing my Safari bookmarks.

hello all, Im looking to host a server on a raspberry pi but I am unsure which pi to purchase. I am assuming I need a certain level of specs/ memory for it to work properly but I cant find any info on mastodons webpage.....

The server would be for social interaction and document storage- is storage the only thing I would be concerned with. If so I'm assuming I can purchase additional storage as I go...?

I'm a complete server and mastodon noob only knowing they can be set up in a house as my brother used to host many (He is currently very ill or I would ask him)

Thanks so much!

I want an app or a website view of the mastodon feed that tries to figure out people I might want to follow based on who I follow (and who they follow). I want a scrolling experience that checks which posts get boosted and favorited most and puts those at the top so that I get the juicy stuff as soon as I open Mastodon, or that finds the posts that a lot of people I follow liked/boosted.

Ideally I want to be able to toggle between this prioritized algorithm feed and the natural chronological feed, but I just don't want to be stuck with just the chronological feed.

Has anyone made this work already?

Use Mastodon on desktop?

I made a browser extension to make following people, favoriting, bookmarking & boosting toots on remote instances as easy as your home instance! (1-click)!

Install Graze For Mastodonhttps://jmz.fyi/GrazeForFirefox (Firefox)https://jmz.fyi/GrazeForChrome (Chrome)
