A place to politely discuss the tools, technique and culture of photography.

This is not a good place to simply share cool photos/videos or promote your own work and projects, but rather a place to discuss photography as an art and post things that would be of interest to other photographers.

I just got a camera (canon 250d) and whenever I take the lense off the body I get all sweaty and afraid I’ll break it by using too much force. Im always careful with it and I noticed the small square on both the body and lense but I just want to know how sensitive it is. Can I scratch or damage anything if I place the lense wrong on the first try? I’m always thinking I’ll break it if I use too much pressure or twist too much, too little.

I've been shooting slr/dslr's for more than 30 years. I swap lenses all the time, thousands and thousands of lens swaps, I've put them on from the wrong point and jammed them and have to force them back off. I've dropped my cameras on bedrock from neck height, had tripods fall over lens first onto asphalt. I've broken a thing or two. I have never damaged the mounting ring on the camera. And I've only seen one damaged mounting ring on the lens side of a plastic kit lens.

Line up your marks and twist, press the button and twist the other way, and dont worry about it, its very unlikely you will do any harm if you aren't literally smashing things against the mounting ring.
