A place to politely discuss the tools, technique and culture of photography.

This is not a good place to simply share cool photos/videos or promote your own work and projects, but rather a place to discuss photography as an art and post things that would be of interest to other photographers.

I just got a camera (canon 250d) and whenever I take the lense off the body I get all sweaty and afraid I’ll break it by using too much force. Im always careful with it and I noticed the small square on both the body and lense but I just want to know how sensitive it is. Can I scratch or damage anything if I place the lense wrong on the first try? I’m always thinking I’ll break it if I use too much pressure or twist too much, too little.

The mount? The mount is strong, its just metal. Its hard to screw up putting a lens on.

I may or may not have dropped some heavy telephoto glass on my mounts a time or two. Made my toes curl but all is still well with the cameras and contacts. I try to be ginger with it but it’s made to last.

you probably won't damage it but every time u take a lens off, u increase the amount of dust you allow into the camera and onto the back part of your lens.

do you own more than one lens??

Practice at home. Go slow. Go a little bit faster as you get more comfortable. It's made of metal, not glass. Put it in wrong and see what prevents you from mounting it wrong.

The engineers designed it to handle being used. Your fear and anxiety about the gear are getting in the way of using it. You can get a feel for how much force to expect.

Watch sports photographers swap lenses in the middle of a game...they're fast, because they've gotten used to knowing which way is up. Maybe practice swapping lenses at home until you recognize familiar click sounds of the lens hitting home

The mount where the lens physically connects is usually very solid. The stuff inside the camera is much more delicate, fortunately it's nearly impossible for the lens itself to reach inside far enough to damage anything. Just don't go poking inside with your finger or a stick.

I've been shooting slr/dslr's for more than 30 years. I swap lenses all the time, thousands and thousands of lens swaps, I've put them on from the wrong point and jammed them and have to force them back off. I've dropped my cameras on bedrock from neck height, had tripods fall over lens first onto asphalt. I've broken a thing or two. I have never damaged the mounting ring on the camera. And I've only seen one damaged mounting ring on the lens side of a plastic kit lens.

Line up your marks and twist, press the button and twist the other way, and dont worry about it, its very unlikely you will do any harm if you aren't literally smashing things against the mounting ring.

Well, you can go to eBay right now and buy any number of utterly ancient SLR cameras, and whatever might be wrong with them, it’s never the lens mount, so…

the square on the camera (sensor) is sensitive . dont touch it. the mount is tough

Lol, I recently switched from Canon to Nikon, the thread is backwards! I’ve gone to switch lenses in the middle of a shoot and forgotten, and twisted the wrong way more times than I care to share. Morale of the story, if you are trying to break it you can… but “accidental damage” probably won’t happen with the lens mount. There’s many other places to damage before that.
