Unpopular Opinion
Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!
How voting works:
Vote the opposite of the norm.
If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.
Guidelines:
Tag your post, if possible (not required)
- If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
- If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].
Rules:
1. NO POLITICS
Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.
2. Be civil.
Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.
3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.
Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.
4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...
Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.
5. No trolling.
This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.
6. Defend your opinion
This is a bit of a mix of rules 4 and 5 to help foster higher quality posts. You are expected to defend your unpopular opinion in the post body. We don't expect a whole manifesto (please, no manifestos), but you should at least provide some details as to why you hold the position you do.
Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

My boyfriend is really into punk, including Sublime. Before we started dating I would have put Sublime in C tier for music. They're fine enough- I most likely won't complain or anything if a song of theirs comes on, but not good enough to go out of my way to listen to.
At my bf's suggestion I listened to their first album last month. It was... Challenging. Aside from one exception, every single song sounded the same. Like, basically they had 1 idea for how they wanted to sound and milked it. I don't tend to care about lyrics a whole lot, but I appreciate most of the political messaging. I thinj my bf expected me to like the weed references but... Eh.
The one exception was "Date Rape", which I had definitely heard before. Musically, it differentiates itself by leaning more into swing and just sounding goofier overall. The lyrics... I felt differently about them when I waa younger. The idea of a terrible man preying upon women being sent to jail to be preyed upon himself has a certain appeal of karmic justice to it. But now that i'm older i'm just kind of disgusted by how predatory american criminal justice system is. "Don't drop the soap" humor makes light of a very serious issue, and "the for-profit prison system is the answer" doesn't have the appeal that it used to. It perpetuates the cycles of violence within our society in order to be more emotionally satisfying. The modern Norwegian prison system is IMO a much better model for creating a society with less violence in it.
Maybe some day I'll go and listen to their other few albums, but... Eh.
Their Gold Album is a great compilation, but Robin the Hood was probably my favorite. If you want to see the best they had to offer it's those two discs on Gold.
Date rape is easily their worst song, I skip it when it comes on. I also hate scarlet begonias, but that's just me.
Let's Go Get Stoned may be my favorite song. It's great musically, when the song breaks down in the third act. DJ's is a jam with a moonbah type beat that kinda differs from the punky ska sound. Their best punky ska sound is probably from the likes of Seeing Red featuring Gwen Stefani, who I cannot stand, but she absolutely belongs on the track, she sounds great.
And then Pool Shark, the two versions of it. When you listen to the lyrics it's pretty blunt about Brad's struggles with heroin, weird to have it be so in your face.
And they've got the classics in what I got, and Santeria, and Garden Grove, all great tunes.
So yeah, I'm a fan. I don't listen to them like I used to, although I'll toss them on on the beach, I consider them to be beach music nowadays, them and 311.
Boss dj is one of my all-time favorite songs... Robbin the hood was absolutely the best sublime album
