Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

6. Defend your opinion

This is a bit of a mix of rules 4 and 5 to help foster higher quality posts. You are expected to defend your unpopular opinion in the post body. We don't expect a whole manifesto (please, no manifestos), but you should at least provide some details as to why you hold the position you do.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

MODERATORS

I just find they're overplayed, overrated, and kind of cringey.

Ska is one of my go to genres, a favorite, but I wish Sublime would go away. Every time I hear them I can't get their songs out of my head for much longer than I would like. Every time.

I also used to hear them way too much in a place outside the US, which outside of shitty pop music was one of those "American" bands or whatever they thought, so bars played them. A lot.

First of all, the lead singer died after their first album, so there's that influencing people's opinions.

Second of all, this flavor of ska ("third wave" ska) was still pretty new and revolutionary at the time.

Finally, they sound "old" and "boring" today because SO MANY bands copied them after. This happens with all highly influential bands. The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were new and revolutionary for their time, but they've been copied so much, they seem old and boring now. Same thing.

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 18 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I'll add that OP is also upset their songs get stuck in their head. That's a weird way to say you like a band.

[–] zout@fedia.io 8 points 1 week ago

That's a wierd argument, I've had "baby shark" and "wheels on the bus"stuck in my head.

[–] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Not true. My daughter has been dancing to a Katy Perry song for the past year and it gets stuck in my head, and I cannot stand pop music in general. Earworms do not imply interest, no way.

[–] psud@aussie.zone 2 points 1 week ago

The trouble is that the best way to get rid of an earworm is to listen to the song.

It sucks when a bad song gets stuck in your head

[–] moendopi@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

I don't know where I said old or boring. I said they get stuck on my head way too easily. I never said they were bad or untalented, I just think they're overrated. And for that matter, so are the Beatles.

But, I guess since this happens with so many bands, I guess I have to like em, even if I don't.

And that's why I put this in "unpopular opinion". I never asked to be convince to like a band I don't like or for someone to change my mind. I just think Sublime is overplayed and overrated, they get stuck in my head.

[–] hexagonwin@lemmy.today 18 points 1 week ago (2 children)

thought this was about the code editor lol

[–] jtrek@startrek.website 3 points 1 week ago

Yeah I was ready to agree. I worked with some people that would use vanilla sublime, and then get mad when their PRs were rejected for having problems. I was like, just use something that finds errors or run the linter/etc yourself. Nope. Their workflow is perfect now just accept this PR with all the unused variables.

Yeah Sublime is overrated, I ain't paying for that shit when vscodium is free. Hell, I'd use Kate first!

Kate is great.

[–] JonsJava@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

Kate turned me into HR for eating Tuna at my desk. I'm no fan of Kate.

Saying you like ska but not Sublime is like saying you like pizza but not dough with sauce and cheese on top.

I'm sorry but while Sublime made some good music they are not the blueprint for ska

[–] bashibazouk@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Weird take. I'm not a fan of third wave but two tone and old Jamaican kick ass. More like you can't understand how someone would not like pizza with triple cheese and some cheese shavings on top as third wave was way to cheesy...

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Sublime is a lot closer to two tone and first wave than it is to RBF or Less Than Jake

[–] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

It's funny, if you were a friend of mine you'd generally hear me say I can't stand ska. But Sublime? Loved them. And Folly, of course, probably one of my favorite bands of all time, although they're super unique. Can't stand ska, but there's always an exception.

[–] Dookieman12@piefed.social 13 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Every time I hear them I can’t get their songs out of my head for much longer than I would like. Every time

Good music will do that to you

[–] SippyCup@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago

Bad music will do it too. Arguably, bad music does it more than good music does.

[–] moendopi@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

It can be good and still be annoying when I can't get it out of my head.

[–] resipsaloquitur@lemmy.cafe 4 points 1 week ago

Got to find the reason.

My boyfriend is really into punk, including Sublime. Before we started dating I would have put Sublime in C tier for music. They're fine enough- I most likely won't complain or anything if a song of theirs comes on, but not good enough to go out of my way to listen to.

At my bf's suggestion I listened to their first album last month. It was... Challenging. Aside from one exception, every single song sounded the same. Like, basically they had 1 idea for how they wanted to sound and milked it. I don't tend to care about lyrics a whole lot, but I appreciate most of the political messaging. I thinj my bf expected me to like the weed references but... Eh.

The one exception was "Date Rape", which I had definitely heard before. Musically, it differentiates itself by leaning more into swing and just sounding goofier overall. The lyrics... I felt differently about them when I waa younger. The idea of a terrible man preying upon women being sent to jail to be preyed upon himself has a certain appeal of karmic justice to it. But now that i'm older i'm just kind of disgusted by how predatory american criminal justice system is. "Don't drop the soap" humor makes light of a very serious issue, and "the for-profit prison system is the answer" doesn't have the appeal that it used to. It perpetuates the cycles of violence within our society in order to be more emotionally satisfying. The modern Norwegian prison system is IMO a much better model for creating a society with less violence in it.

Maybe some day I'll go and listen to their other few albums, but... Eh.

[–] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Their Gold Album is a great compilation, but Robin the Hood was probably my favorite. If you want to see the best they had to offer it's those two discs on Gold.

Date rape is easily their worst song, I skip it when it comes on. I also hate scarlet begonias, but that's just me.

Let's Go Get Stoned may be my favorite song. It's great musically, when the song breaks down in the third act. DJ's is a jam with a moonbah type beat that kinda differs from the punky ska sound. Their best punky ska sound is probably from the likes of Seeing Red featuring Gwen Stefani, who I cannot stand, but she absolutely belongs on the track, she sounds great.

And then Pool Shark, the two versions of it. When you listen to the lyrics it's pretty blunt about Brad's struggles with heroin, weird to have it be so in your face.

And they've got the classics in what I got, and Santeria, and Garden Grove, all great tunes.

So yeah, I'm a fan. I don't listen to them like I used to, although I'll toss them on on the beach, I consider them to be beach music nowadays, them and 311.

[–] benderbeerman@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Boss dj is one of my all-time favorite songs... Robbin the hood was absolutely the best sublime album

[–] Jerb322@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (2 children)

So do I down vote if I disagree or up vote because I think it's unpopular?

[–] 0ops@piefed.zip 2 points 1 week ago

The second one

[–] thagoat@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

And then she pulled out my mushroom tip.

Morgan Freeman voice:

If it comes out and goes 'drip drip drip', then you should seek medical attention.

[–] replicat@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yeah I've always preferred Vim

[–] moendopi@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Hmm hmm, micro for me

[–] cupcakezealot@piefed.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 week ago (2 children)

bouncing souls > sublime i said what i said

[–] 1hitsong@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)
[–] nothingcorporate@lemmy.today 2 points 1 week ago

They drink beer and wear Adidas

[–] moendopi@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

The Bouncing Souls are a long time favorite of mine

[–] swab148@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You probably just hear the hits, listen to their other stuff and you might like them again!

[–] moendopi@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Oh no, I've had all their stuff a long time, used to be into them. It's not a matter of listening to more.

[–] fleem@piefed.zeromedia.vip 2 points 1 week ago

i will kinda agree here and say that outside of the handful of songs that are truly just great songs, the rest of their stuff is very flamboyantly trashy.

i say this as I've slowly been culling most sublime out of my ska/whiteboi reggae playlists

i don't want to hear about underage sex

now that weed is legal its not quite so exciting to hear about wanting to smoke all day (especially in mixed company)

they are pretty aggressive and willing to murder/steal, which is not the vibe I'm usually going for with my ska.

that being said: the few songs that broke through are truly important!

[–] WhyIHateTheInternet@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Agree mostly. In high school back in the 90s I used "5446" as my example for syncopation and got in trouble for the fuck my pussy bits lol

[–] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I said suck the motherfucker, you bitin' it, shit.

Yeah that was it lol. Teacher was cool but was like dude, no. I got an a.

[–] 0ops@piefed.zip 2 points 1 week ago

I hate upvoting this because I love sublime, but them's the rules

[–] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I play bass and it's fun to play Sublime. Over rated for sure, but you always have to play shitty music in bars if you're playing covers because that's what you get paid for. I also don't like 311, but people love that shit and it's fun to play. I agree that neither are pleasant to my ear holes.
