Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

awww. STOP VOLUNTEERING FOR THE MILITARY.

[–] MehBlah@lemmy.world 12 points 15 hours ago (2 children)

I'm poor and desperate. Whose hiring? System is working as intended.

[–] jerkface@lemmy.ca -1 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago) (1 children)

So you fucking murder people?? Why join the fucking military if that is your solution, you'd do less harm in the world just stealing what you need. I'm poor and desperate, too, but I'd rather starve to death.

[–] MehBlah@lemmy.world 1 points 22 minutes ago

Are you? Starving to death?

[–] zbyte64@awful.systems 3 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

The purpose of a system is what it does.

[–] anarchy79@lemmy.world 2 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Unless it's badly designed, in which case it does everything worse than intended.

[–] zbyte64@awful.systems 2 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Sounds like job security to me

[–] anarchy79@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago

If you think so then let me tell you about the history of planned obsolescence.

I'm sorry? Did the draft begin?

[–] anarchy79@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago) (1 children)

It depends on what you mean. They don't exactly draft Liberian diamond miners either. Poor uneducated Liberians do that because they have to.

[–] 3abas@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

Holy shit...

Did you just equate working in a mine for sustenance to committing war crimes for a placement in the middle class, lifetime benefits, free education, and the expectation of respect and special treatment for the rest of your life?

[–] flandish@lemmy.world 1 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

our US military is entirely voluntary, if you exclude the influence by capitalists and gov staff who direct communities to keep its people poor and desperate enough to think they can “win” by joining.

[–] anarchy79@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago) (3 children)

Is it really voluntary when you have no other recourse? When the circumstances of your life are so hopeless that is seems like the only option?

[–] jerkface@lemmy.ca 0 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago)

If your options are to murder innocent people or to die, then lie down and get comfortable. But I have a feeling that while you are waiting, other options will occur to you.

[–] 3abas@lemmy.world 4 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Work at a gas station or go murder brown people for way more money and paid education?

It's a choice, a selfish one.

[–] anarchy79@lemmy.world 3 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Look, I get what you're saying, and "I was only following orders" is also a choice, and one that you should get rightfully judged for, but let's not pretend like creating circumstances where people find themselves uneducated and without life prospects isn't a big recruitment vector for the military.

[–] 3abas@lemmy.world 0 points 2 hours ago

Yeah no shit, the military gives you incentives to be a Nazi, you choosing those incentives knowing you're doing Nazi shit still makes you a Nazi, regardless of how you end up if you don't choose to be a Nazi.

What point are you making exactly? We don't have to pretend like they had no other choice...

[–] cantstopthesignal@sh.itjust.works 2 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

You can join the army or join the corps because you can't make it here anymore.

[–] anarchy79@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago

And they're not making it easier making it here.
