I think most western countries could say that about each other.
Yes, there are shitty landlords in Australia. However, I've never encountered mould or a landlord that wouldn't make appropriate repairs.
I'm sure there are shitty landlords in Canada, and every other country.
I've had to move a lot over the years. Lived in large and small cities in 4 provinces.
I can say with great certainty that this rental scenario (depicted in OP) is very common in any conservative managed or low income areas. Tends to not be common in nicer neighbourhoods.
Friend of mine once lived in a rental house that had black mold with his wife and kid. The landlord had done precisely jack shit for those three years. They kept getting lung conditions and stuff, and my friend tried to clean it himself, but it always came back.
Then one day his wife had a series of strokes during a particularly intense bout of the chronic lung shit they all got when the weather was wet.
She's blind now. Suffered brain damage. Different personality, loss of cognitive ability, an irate shell of her former self. This woman who once had a 200 grand job in the Commonwealth public service. The marriage did not survive.
My friend is now looking after his kid mostly as a single dad in a smaller but mold-free apartment in a cheaper suburb.
The Canberra rental market is insane, and that landlord deserves arson.

When Australians say times are tough, it's true, but they're usually unaware of how much tougher it is for everyone else.
There is a reason for the increasing uptick of North Americans moving to Australia and not looking back.
Friendly Jordies recently "reviewed" some Canadian cities and basically summed it up well. He couldn't believe how much damage the political choices had done to the nation in the past 15 years.
I've always looked at Australia as the baby brother behind USA ๐ Canada is the middle child. We should just all be States United ๐ช๐ช

This may be the most American thing I've ever read. The ego that must be present for someone to think that the U.S. is more mature or a country to look up to is ridiculous.

Every single person on this planet would sacrifice their first born to get a chance to live in this beautiful land! Last night I read a story on the interweebs about europoors dying in the Atlantic Ocean on rafts trying to escape socialism and come to murica! Funny, y'all been recruiting Americans there for air traffic controller jobs. A few buddies of mine ended up there. How do you feel about Americans getting well paying jobs and getting paid to relocate to Australia?
That's how lots of Australians come here. My best friend is originally from Michigan, he came here in high school, and recently gave up his US citizenship because we can all see what's going to happen.
Something like a third of the population was born in a different country. It's normal.
Normal. Australia is just people from all over the world.
There's some weirdos that think it isn't, but they're not welcome.
Wish a solid 40% of Americans would wake up to that same truth.
Funny, America laid off all its air traffic controllers and has had to close airports due to the lack.
