Registrations for 'mastodon.social' are often closed, but you can learn more about Mastodon and register with another instance at joinmastodon.org. It doesn't matter which instance you register on - you can still follow anyone on any instance.

If you are looking for service providers that can host and manage an instance for you:

Heeeeydiho

i used a Tutorial to change the Character Limit from Mastodon from 500 to 10000 Chars, it all went well no errors, i recompiled and reloaded with "systemctl restart mastodon-sidekiq.service mastodon-streaming.service mastodon-web.service"

when i use

https://blog.xxxxxxxx.xyz/api/v2/instance it even shows

statuses
max_characters 10000
registrations:

max_toot_chars 10000

so everything well uh? no i still can only post 500 characters somehow? any reason?

Idk the answer but I would consider how changing the character limit may affect federation.

It doesn't really affect, the protocol does not define any character limit

Sure but will other Mastodon instances display them?

My bookwyrm posts federate and display without issue. These posts are mostly reviews, sometimes 1000+ words.

Yes. without any problem. If you use Mastodon vanilla you may find that you have to scroll long and hard because it doesn't collapse the post with a "Show more", but not much more

Many Mastodon clients and Mastodon forks already handle this issue adequately, as do other software in the fediverse such as Pleroma/Akkoma and the Misskey forks.
