Just started dating one, she tells me she doesn't like onion. Like what? You eat onion in so much shit without realizing it! How do you not like onion‽

[–] Viceversa@lemmy.world 18 points 4 days ago (3 children)

I don't like onions either. The taste is ok sometimes, but not very nice. And the texture is awful.

[–] Poem_for_your_sprog@lemmy.world 11 points 4 days ago (4 children)

Practically every cuisine around the world uses onion.

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 20 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Some people don't like taste.

[–] Poem_for_your_sprog@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Must suck hating every cuisine on the planet

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Well, it does suck. I remember when I was in high school and I found some cookbook with recipes from different countries. I tried cooking some of them and was amazed at how intense the taste was. Only later I realized that those recipes were pretty normal, they just tasted amazing compared with my mother's cooking. It's not that my mother's cooking was very bland but Polish cuisine is pretty boring. It's mostly salty and sour, not much variation. And some people never venture out beyond what they grew up with.

[–] nymnympseudonym@piefed.social 4 points 4 days ago

TBH Northern Italian food is the same way. My Italian grandmother made godawful bland pasta sauce

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 3 points 4 days ago

Speaking as someone with texture issues and a very sensitive pallet, it fucking sucks ass. Lived in India for 4 years, couldn't eat fucking anything even though I tried to force myself every day. I wish I could enjoy Asian food the way everyone else does :( At least I had butter chicken 😭

[–] KuroiKaze@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

Peppers >>>>>onions, rank up playa

[–] Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca 11 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Some people would take a pill for sustenance if they could.

[–] Nollij@sopuli.xyz 8 points 4 days ago (1 children)

You basically can, albeit not in pill form. There's a whole category of complete meal replacement options, mostly in the form of shakes. The best known is Soylent by Rosa Labs, but there are dozens of others targeting every nutritional profile around. Most are a fraction of the cost of even the most basic foods.

Strangely, most of those people will still not even try these.

[–] LongDickJonsson@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

I remember reading somewhere that you need to use your teeth and chew food for health reasons (tooth decay otherwise?). So it's not a great replacement, even if you hate taste

[–] LiarAmongAll@lemmy.zip 2 points 4 days ago (2 children)

I just replace it all with shallots. They're way better, no nasty slimy texture. Fuck cooked onions, nastiest shit ever, texture-wise

[–] SlurpingPus@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Yall have some wrong kind of onion. Where I am, raw onion is clean and crunchy like fresh cabbage. Do yall buy onion only after it has been lying around in warm air for a year?

What really has awful texture is boiled cabbage or onion.

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 1 points 3 days ago

Is it possible you’re cooking the onion wrong?

Out of curiosity, is it any onions?

Like there’s white, yellow, and red onions. On top of that, lightly cooked yellow onions are far different from heavily carmalized ones (crunchy and oniony vs soft and sweet)

[–] Viceversa@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Any of them bastards

Except leek. But I don't know for sure whether it counts as an onion

[–] lyn@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 days ago

What about spring onion/green onion?

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Don't forget pickled red onions. Fuck I gotta bring a jar of those to snack on to the movie tonight

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I used to know this place that did pickled garlic cloves. I miss them.

I have a love hate relationship with it. The extra flavor onion can add is god tier. The texture is awful. So I cook with it but leave minimal pieces left in the dish.

[–] MasterNerd@lemmy.zip 10 points 4 days ago (1 children)

That's interesting. I'm huge on texture and I love onions for theirs. Tomatoes on the other hand...

[–] BladeFederation@piefed.social 8 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Incidentally, I also love the texture of tomatoes 🤔 are you my evil twin by any chance?

[–] CrimeIsLegalNow@ani.social 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I'm both your evil triplet, I don't like the texture of either.

[–] Nouvellalia@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

Read this as "toilet". It still works. Maybe better.

I am kind of the same way with garlic. I can certainly enjoy foods that have garlic as one of the ingredients, but if it's the main flavor, I tend to not like it. Like, if I'm choosing from the hummus varieties available to me, I have no problem with the plain hummus that obviously has garlic in it, but I don't like the "roasted garlic" variety that has extra garlic.

[–] rmuk@feddit.uk 6 points 4 days ago

I love garlic in all forms but I have to agree - garlic as a seasoning is very different to garlic as a flavour.

[–] SalamiDommie@lemmus.org 6 points 4 days ago (3 children)

I have a hypothesis but am not smart enough to verify. But I think Onion affects some people like cilantro. Where a portion of people have a reaction to it and others do not. But mostly that they are responding to onion's intended natural defense of vapor and oil.

[–] captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I have an alternative hypothesis: At least some people who say they don't like onion are basing that opinion entirely on raw onion and refuse to consider and/or haven't noticed cooked onion.

Go to restaurant, get served a house salad, bite into the purple thing, OH GOD WHAT IS THAT?

[–] HurricaneLiz@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Yeah, I can't eat raw onion or celery bc it squeaks when bitten like a live animal or something. I definitely use onion and celery powders when cooking tho 😂

Alliums (which includes onions) are not uncommon food allergy so there's something in your theory

[–] SlurpingPus@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

I didn't like onions in my childhood. I grew fond of them when approaching adulthood, particularly when I moved out and started properly cooking for myself and buying my own fast food. Now a sandwich without onion doesn't taste right.

So I think it's rather a matter of a particular configuration of tastebuds. Just like I grew out of liking overly sweet foods.

[–] TwodogsFighting@lemdro.id 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)
[–] CluckN@lemmy.world 11 points 4 days ago

Why are we listing more reasons to like onion?

[–] OriginEnergySux@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

My wife loves taylor swift and thinks pepper is too spicey

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 4 points 4 days ago (3 children)

My husband doesn't eat onion, pepper, mushroom and any other "weird" vegetable. Try cooking with these restrictions. If I have to use one of these, he'll eat it, but he won't like it, so I feel like it's not fair to serve to him constantly, only once in a while.

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 2 points 4 days ago

Those are like the 3 things I use the most! God, I feel for you!

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

You could try pawning your husband off on my ex-wife. She has all of the same "restrictions", but also bell peppers and garlic. Oh and no fish of any sort, except for herring, which she'll eat tons of whenever pregnant (which I think would be most of the time if she could)

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 1 points 3 days ago

Seafood is disgusting though. Whales shit in that sea.

I also dont like union like the caremelized shit it sucks but if its cooked into a dish i can enjoy it maybe sm like this?

[–] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

My mom hated onions and could tell if there was even a tiny amount in something. I didn't like them much as a kid either

My mom's the same way, except she can only taste the onion when being told it's in the dish...even when there is none

[–] LwL@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

I kinda hate onion. If I don't taste it it's fine but any dish that I've tried both with and without I heavily prefer without. Fried onions are the exception for me.
